Proposal narrative 3.10.

13 Describe the organization, including mission and history, year established, geographic reach, staff size, and staff capabilities to conduct the proposed work. The Organization: The Applied History of Art and Architecture Educational Foundation (501(c) 3). Established 2002 The Applied History of Art and Architecture Mission Statement Mission: to increase access to art history instruction and facilitate the adoption of constructionist teaching methods by educators to support students multiple intelligences. This work is important for all learners: in school, home schooling, one-room schools, adults wanting to return to leaning, or going to new places, life-long learning through online learning. Art is food for the soul. We believe everyone should have access to art and art history instruction. Each student has a unique learning style and wisdom for interpreting the world. We believe each student deserves to have his or her particular strengths and intelligences honored and nurtured. Arthistoryworlds.org knows that by doing this and

supporting multiple intelligences in the classroom, more students will succeed and the world will benefit from their gifts and become a better place. We also believe in project-based learning. Making something serves to remind the student what was learned in an art history course and apply that knowledge to a history course. The foundation was granted its (501(c) 3 in 2002. The reach of arthistoryworlds.org is global because it is being on the created on the Internet and open to everyone. Katherine Bolman has an MFA, MEd, and is a Doctor of Education. Her Masters Thesis was Is Study Abroad Educational? In order to answer this question Dr. Bolman took 15 students through Europe starting with Crete, continued on to cover the history of Western art by going through Greece, Italy, Pompeii, Rome, Ravenna, and then took the night train to Paris. Paris provided a wealth of museums, as well as architecture from different times, Versailles and Chartres and the cathedrals in Paris. The next part of our journey was in the Germany and Austria where the tour ended walking around a real castle. The students saw most of Western Art 101 on site. One student starting her freshman year asked her art

history faculty if she could take the art 101 final without taking the course. She was the third student to pass that exam without taking the course. Dr. Bolman, background which includes teaching in Europe to learning web design and creating a major art history site on the Internet suggests she will continue this work after grant monies have run out. Problem or opportunity: Describe the problem or opportunity to be addressed by the project. Describe the population that will benefit from the project, including an estimate of size or numbers. (Maximum 5,000 character count single spaced) Specifically, arthistoryworlds.org web site will assist with solving the following problems: 1.Physical isolation from institutions. Art history is primarily offered at the college level, teaching institutions for those with an Internet connection. Places that have Internet access will be able to use the site to teach their students. Because arthistoryworlds.org offers art history instruction, free-of-charge, via the Internet, access to instruction is no longer limited by geography and proximity to colleges or universities. Most schools have Internet access although few offer art history classes. The web site will provide a resident art historian for schools without trained staff. The site will

never replace art history teachers, however, it can provide a valuable resource for students who would otherwise go without art history because their schools cannot afford the teacher, which is the majority of schools in the world. With the addition of Skype a teacher from the foundation can participate in a live class anywhere. 2.The slides and images for studying art history have been cost prohibitive for many schools. arthistoryworlds.org provides the images of art from around the world and through time, online and without charge. 3.Art history is rarely taught at the K-12 level. The reasons for neglecting this important subject are varied but have primarily to do with economics and unfamiliarity: 4. Its value in assisting students to perform better in other subject areas is not widely understood. Teaching the Minds Eye to see is a skill needed in a wide variety of courses and the work place. Taking a look at chemistry and the need to understand how molecules work is but one example. Because its value is not understood and with budget cuts and limited funding available, schools do not prioritize art history for funding. This will no longer be a problem as arthistoryworlds.org will grow and

continue to provide generations art history around the world.

How many people will see this site? Arthistoryworlds.org has a tracker so that I can get some understanding of how many people are accessing this site. The over all statistics says that as many as 400 people in one day have accessed the site. So far, 73,449 people from 38 countries have used the site. This site has been used to teach in Pakistan and Nepal. The interaction took place-using Skype. 5. The impact on the students in Honolulu should be greater than usual. I have been asked by the NEH Chair of World History to send a grant proposal to the NEH with the specific intention of paying history teachers to work on the problem of integrating art history in their classes. If we get funding teachers will be paid to work during the summer 2014. The history teacher will be encouraged work images of the artwork done during the time frame they teach. Creativity cannot be taught, but creating the space and materials for it to come alive is possible. 6. Another goal of this project is to complete the

history of art from pre-history to Post Modern, and make it available for students and scholars worldwide. It is important at this time to engage a group of scholars to assist in the continuing creation of this site. Local History teachers will be a part of this group. The teachers will be paid by the foundation, There are many ways to learn, acquire, and absorb knowledge about art and art history. One of the ways to learn about the art created during the period the students are studying in their history classes is be assigned to find an object they like and to try their hand at making similar things. For example, if you try to make a drawing in the style of a cave dweller in France during prehistoric times, what might you learn about the person who made those drawings? You may learn how difficult it is to draw animals they saw in the Caves of France. While it is important to have image recognition and information about the history of particular periods in the history it is also important to have an understanding of the ease or difficulty of creating works of art using the rules and tools of each era. For this course, it is more important that students get the feel of the materials than that they become accomplished in each medium. By the time they complete this course, this experience will have provide them with a depth of information about the

use of different media, and the ease and difficulty of working with the various media. We understand that there are many materials they will not be able to use, glassblowing is one of the things students cannot engage in unless they have access to a glassblowing studio. I suggest that teachers work with the music of the time playing in the background so that students will come to know the history, the music and something about making the objects important to the time and place. If history teachers do this they will provide one more way for their students to remember history. A large portion of this work will be in collaboration with high school history teachers during the summer of 2014. The challenge here is how would history teachers use art history? This approach to solving the problem of including art history into high school classes is important. The Internet has a vast number of images and this work, will organizes some of them by time and country. Arthistoryworlds.org has taken an around the world approach to art history. The course starts with Prehistoric art around the world. Each unit has quantity, a wealth of information and images. Textbooks cannot present as many images in color as arthistoryworlds.org does. No art history textbook

carries the full text of scholarly papers with each unit. Working with history teachers will give me a way to understand the difficulty of inserting objects into a class they have taught for years. As arthistoryworlds.org progresses it will be of value to more teachers and students. Activities: Describe the activities to be performed, and the services or products to be delivered, including quantities and a timeline. In this case we are starting with history teachers that in some ways are an unknown quantity. Their common ground is they all teach history about some part of the world. The history teachers will: Research and collect art that was done in the time frame they are teaching. 2. They will read and collect articles about this time period. 3. They will meet as a group one or more times a week to discuss their ideas about the use of art in their classes. 4. They will each create a blog using WordPress with or without a password. 5. Their final assignment is to write a paper about their experience of the process. In the end this will be a messy process, as each teacher will be working with the material specifically useful for them. Not all time periods will be covered.

I will fill in the missing pieces. The history teachers will discover a different way to teach history. The product will be the website already under construction, the teachers will learn WordPress as a way to communicate with others and me. Explain why you chose this approach to the problem or opportunity. (Maximum 7,500character count single spaced) I live at Arcadia which means that there are a lot of time consuming things I no longer have to do. Finding my self with time I began to think about ways to use that time that might help solve a problem. I cannot do anything about Climate Change or Clean Energy. I had been reading about the fact that schools were dropping art and art history from their course list. I thought I might be able to do something about this problem. If what I do is on the Internet open to everyone that might make a major change is some peoples life. I created a name for this project The Applied History of Art and Architecture Educational Foundation and got my not-for-profit status so that I could receive funding by other foundations and individuals. One of my problems that happened when I started writing grant proposals was that I needed to tell everyone what I was going to do, which was not easy. Two foundations in Honolulu gave me start up

funding. I used that to hire people who did web design. I found that I was not happy with their work. I then went to the University of Hawaii to learn web design. This took two years. I then went to the Apple store to learn iWeb which was a great fit until Apple decided to drop their support of iWeb. I therefore had to transfer all of the work I had done to WordPress which was not easy for me to learn. I have learned it and you can see the results at arthistoryworld.org

Presenting an around the world history of art is time consuming. Working with a group of history teachers may change the way I do things. Teaching history teachers how to use WordPress may provide them with a tool for education that they have not had before. The history teachers will be paid for their work during the summer. I would like to present the work at each school the teachers work at, as a way to spread the idea. Although this approach will work only in Honolulu, I have been asked to write a proposal to the NEH and to give a paper at the World History Conference in June. These will be a way for history teachers to learn a different approach to teaching history. Expected results: Explain how participants or the community will benefit. (Provide specific, measurable expected results.) Describe the plan to determine the effectiveness of the project.

Teachers will learn as we work together. History teachers will learn about need to have art history in the schools, in meetings held here in Honolulu and on the mainland. I have been invited to give a paper at the World History Conference, which will give coverage of this work a wider audience. One important part of arthistoryworlds.org is that the teachers make something after a unit is completed. The teachers should have their own sketchbook and a variety of materials to use on watercolor paper. Teachers will also learn how a person made the colors they are using and will discuss if this is important to their history course. This will provide art classes for teachers using the site. In terms of the larger community it is not unusual for parents to become engaged in what their children are doing. Parents can learn along with their children. I cannot predict the numbers of people in the community will feel the impact of this work. I can tell you the statistics as reported by WordPress. The largest number of people who have stopped by the site in one day is 400 and to total views is 73,694. I will be teaching using this site at the Intergenerational program this summer. The audience here is focused in a way that bring out new talents that they never thought they could do.

Funding plan: Explain the project budget, including adjustments to be made if not all anticipated funding is received. Describe the plan, if any, to continue funding the project after the grant period ends.

I am writing grant proposals to the Cooke Foundation and the National for the Humanities. The funding I am requesting is to pay teachers of history to work with me the summer of 2014. I am hoping to raise enough money to pay four teachers for the whole of summer session. I will learn a lot working with teachers of history.

Once we know what funding we will have we will then approach the history teachers in Honolulu public schools. If we do not get funding we will continue as before,

creating one unit at a time. The foundation will not ask history teachers to work with us with out being paid. It would be sad if we were not funded because I feel that this particular group does not meet and come up with some solutions, I would personally loose a lot.
