HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

(3) To analyze ways and means to implement HR concepts and to achieve competitive advantage through people. The main thrust of the course is to disseminate knowledge about basic HR concepts and issues as well as to initiate debate about the values and beliefs that stand in the way of implementing this

knowledge within our own unique cultural milieu. This course adopts the perspective of the human resource manager and addresses human resource topics from a strategic as well as a tactical perspective, considering how effective human resource management might aid in developing competitive advantage. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Human resource managers and line managers in any organization whether large or small, public or private, profit or non-profit, engaged in whatever type of work are well aware that a critical source of competitive advantage often comes not from having the most original product design, the best marketing strategies, or cutting edge technology, but rather from having an effective system for procuring, mobilizing, and managing the organizations human assets. A number of recent developments, including demographic changes in the Pakistani labor force such as an exploding population with a resultantly large labor pool of young unemployed people, falling educational standards, a cosmopolitan population (especially in Karachi) and a new generation of employees with a differing set of values, ethical and moral standards have made human resource management increasingly important and challenging for organizations. It is therefore remarkable how frequently Pakistani firms fail to implement effective human resource management analyses and practices. This course addresses the process of managing people in organizations in a structured and thorough manner.
