Justification based on pedagogical principles and purpose with reference to the primary English language curriculum (KBSR and KSSR) Pedagogical principle: Writing poem gives children the opportunity to explore the power of words and to play with the rhythms and patterns of language. Songs, rhymes and chants are ideal tools to be used in the language classroom. It often works well to create a poem collaboratively with the whole class first before children work on their own poems individually, or in pairs or groups. It can develop all skills in an integrated way and encourage physical involvement. For example the strategies that can be used in teaching is total physical response TPR. Aspect in pedagogical principle is culture, content, interest, values, age, resources, proficiency level. In culture, language play at home allows the teacher to connect the childs experiences of language play at home to poetry in the classroom. children are engaged in various forms of rich literacy outside of the classroom, and while in the classroom they need the opportunity to explore their own literacy practices in order to build the bridge between home and school. Besides, poetry is a part of culture. There

have been poems created for public occasions, for work, for weddings, for funerals, and for many other public and private celebrations. Poetry encourages parental bonds. Children and their parents share wellknown verses, sing together, and recite poetry on car trips, at bedtimes, and even to say goodbyes. Furtheremore content of a poem also rich with vocabulary. It teaches grammar and other linguistic skills. It can also improve students fluency in reading. Many poems contain rhyme. Knowing how to rhyme will help a child to read. Teaching rhyming words in kindergarten teaches a basic component of phonics and a very important pre-reading skill. Teaching children to find, read, or create a list of rhyming words helps them recognize phonetic sounds. Phonetic sounds are the building blocks of reading. Syllables can be taught using poetry. Syllables, the division of words, can enhance the students hearing, reading, and spelling. In the same time if the student enjoy the learning experinces automatically the student will create desire to continue learning. Poems can help to increase an ESL students vocabulary, to distinguish between verbs and adjectives, develop a rhythm of the language and learn how to use tone for emphasis. For values, the memorization of poetry has its benefits as well. When students memorize and recite poetry they develop enunciation, projection, and clarity in their oral speech. They develop a sense of rhythm, linguistic capacity, and verbal structure. Memorization also exercises a childs mental capacity and develops is flexibility and strength. The teacher can provide opportunities for children to make connections between their understanding of lesson themes and their own personal experiences. In addition its can promotes ownership in learning. There are tons of great poetry collections to choose from. Some may be best for young children such as babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, some may be best for children of elementary age, and other poems may be best for teens. The important thing to realize is poetry can work

for all ages. The teacher can pick the suitable poem for different ages, so that the student is ready learn based on the level. Besides it easy for the student to understand the content if the already aquired the skill of readiness. Resources, Include different poets, genres, topics, and themes for example children from all over the world have been exposed to nursery rhymes in their native language. Nursery rhymes are a simple form of poetry. Using these common nursery rhymes help students learn many new vocabulary words in the English language. It is important to let ESL students know that poems do not always rhyme. The rhyme is a way of creating patterns in sound. These sound patterns can help students to remember words or phrases. Rhyming words have the same ending sounds, but its important to know that they are not always spelled the exact same way. Take note that the proficiency level is also important in teaching young learner, try to adapt and simplify the sentences as simple as it could for the student to understand besides using repetition, and speaking at slower pace in line with the student compherension level.

In writing skills: o Pupils will be able to express their ideas clearly on paper in legible handwritinf or communicate by electronic media. o Focus on writing is on developing pupils writing ability beginning at the word, phrase level before progressing to sentences and paragraph levels. o Pupils are capable to write simple compositions comprising several paragraphs. o Attention also paid to penmanship so that even from a young age, pupils are taught to write clearly and legible including cursive writing. o Simple compositions and the various steps involved in writing, such as planning, drafting, revising, and editing are taught.

o In process, pupils learn the genre approach to writing as they are taught to use appropriate vocabulary and correct grammar to get their meaning across clearly. Language arts and the standards for Language Arts in KSSR: o cover a range of creative and literary works in English such as rhymes, songs, poems, stories and plays to activate pupils imagination and interest. o allow pupils to benefit from hearing and using language from fictional as well as non-fictional sources. o allow pupils to gain rich and invaluable experiences using the English language through fun-filled and meaningful activities. o train pupils to be able to appreciate, demonstrate understanding and express personal responses to literary and creative works for enjoyment. o Hence they will also be able to use English for both functional as well as aesthetic purposes, confidently and competently by the end of Year 6.
