60 Phyllostachys moso bamboo seeds

Synonym for Phyllostachys moso: - Phyllostachys pubescens mazel - Phyllostachys heterocycla pubescens - Phyllostachys edulis The bamboo Phyllostachys moso is one of the few giant bamboos that are hardy. Full-grown plants will survive temperatures of -20 Celsius / -4 Fahrenheit for a short time. This bamboo is originated in China and Japan. There it reached an amazing height up to 24 meters / 78 feets. In Warm temperate climate zones, including Central Europe, the bamboo will reach a height of 6-11 meters / 9-36 feets. It is possible to cut off excessive culms, after that it will grow out at sides. Growth height: 6-11 m / 9-36 feets (Depends on climate and care)

Growth property: Running rhizomes, invasive Culms diameter: 6-9 cm / 2-4 inches Culms: Blue-green culms that are covered with whitish sebaceous at young culms Leaves: The foliage is of a light, lush growth and is cascading down Hardiness : until -20 Celsius / -4 Fahrenheit Location: Sun, half shade Recommendation: Single posting, group planting, group of shrubs or forest Notes on growth development (Guidelines): These guidelines are based on optimal climatic conditions, soil conditions and the appropriate care. If the bamboo is limited in its spread or kept in a pot the growth is much lower. After 1 year: 20- 40 cm [ 8- 15 inches] After 3 years: 60- 90 cm [ 23- 35 inches] After 5 years: 150-200 cm [ 60- 80 inches] After 7 years: 350-500 cm [135-200 inches] [until US-Zone 6a]

After 9 years: maximum height Germination instruction: - Soak seeds in water for 20-30 hours - When planting seeds they should be covered with soil as thick as a thumb - For germination the seeds need a temperature around 28-32 Celsius [82-90 Fahrenheit]. - The first seedlings should sprout after 4-6 weeks. - After 6 months the maximum germination rate is reached

TOMATO "Pineapple" 100 Seeds

A stunning Heirloom Beef steak variety producing 1lb red and yellow striped fruits with similar markings inside when cut. The flavour is wonderful, rich, fruity and sweet. Strong vines bear an abundant crop. Indeterminate. 90 days from germination. What's the difference between "indeterminate" and "determinate" tomatoes? Determinate tomatoes, or "bush" tomatoes, are varieties that grow to a compact height (generally 3 - 4'). Determinates stop growing when fruit sets on the top bud. All the tomatoes from the plant ripen at approximately the same time (usually over period of 12 weeks). They require a limited amount of staking for support and are perfectly suited for container planting. Indeterminate tomatoes will grow and produce fruit until killed by frost. They can reach heights of up to 12 feet although 6 feet is normal. Indeterminates will bloom, set new fruit and ripen fruit all at the same time throughout the season. They require substantial staking for support and benefit from being constrained to a central growing stem.

Sow in spring under glass or on a windowsill 1/16 inch deep. Germination takes around 6-14 days at 65-75F. Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle into 3 inch pots. Grow on under cooler conditions and when about 8 inches tall, either plant in their growing position in the greenhouse or gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions and plant out 18 inches apart in a warm and sunny spot in moist, fertile well drained soil and keep watered.

PUMPKIN "Dills Atlantic Giant"

10 Seeds

The ultimate variety for giant pumpkin contests holding the world record at 1689lb. It requires plenty of space and a warm long summer to reach its full potential, but with care produces exceptional sized pumpkins. Realistically with average care and a good summer, fruit of 200-300 lbs are achievable in the UK. (They are also of excellent texture and flavour). Mature in around 125 days from germination. (Our seeds are supplied direct from 1 of the only 2 growers licensed and endorsed directly by "Howard Dill Enterprises" to reproduce this variety) Easy to cultivate, provided germination instructions are followed.

SUMMER SQUASH / COURGETTE / ZUCCHINI

SOIL / LOCATION A sunny spot protected from strong winds is essential. The soil should be well drained and rich in humus, the more the better. When preparing the site; for bush varieties (Courgettes) allow 24in between each plant and for trailing varieties 36 48in.

SOWING AND PLANTING For an early start (late Mar) place a single seed edgeways 1/2inch deep in seed compost in a 3inch pot. The critical part is temperature, these need at least 65F continuous soil temperature

(preferably more to maximise germination rates) until germinated, so a propagator, well heated greenhouseor airing cupboard is ideal - gradually harden off seedlings after the last frost before planting outdoors. The most common reason for poor / zero germination is low / uneven soil temperature coupled with too much moisture. Outdoors you can plant from around late May in southern areas if warm ( The larger seed types are still best sown in a pot to guarantee germination and soil temperature which needs to be 65F+). We would also advise planting up to 3 seeds per hole and thinning to the strongest, as you have less time to plant more if any fail. Make sure you protect the seedlings as they emerge, slugs and snails will love them.

WATERING, WEEDING AND MAINTENANCE TIPS Keep the soil moist water copiously around the plants, not over them. Keep weed free to allow air circulation. Once the plants start to fruit, feed every 14 days with a tomato type fertilizer, these are greedy plants.

HARVESTING AND STORAGE TIPS: These will fruit early and rapidly become prolific, as the bush / vines grow. For most summer squash the key thing is to pick the fruit small and tender and they will keep fruiting all summer until the first frost. A knife is best to remove fruit. If any fruit get to big, cut and discard to encourage new flowers. Some people are allergic to the tiny bristles / spines on courgette leaves. If in doubt wear gloves. Leave the last courgettes of the season to swell and they can be harvested as small marrows. Courgettes / summer squash do not keep well for more than a week; there again you will need to be eating them quick to keep up with production. For spaghetti squash keep harvesting when around 10 inches. These will store for 6-8 weeks max if kept cool and dry.

WINTER SQUASH / PUMPKIN

SOIL / LOCATION A sunny spot protected from strong winds is essential. The soil must be well drained and rich in humus, the more the better. I fill each hole at least 12 square with garden compost and paper at the bottom into which goes a single plant. For bush varieties 24in between each plant is fine 48in for vines. Many winter Squash / Pumpkins like to sprawl out and need plenty of space. Vining Squash / Pumpkins require a larger area to run, whilst semi-vining and bush varieties of winter squash / courgette can be well contained. If space is tight just keep turning the branches back to the centre to prevent spreading and over-running other plants.

SOWING AND PLANTING For an early start (Mid / Late Apr) place a single seed edgeways 1/2inch deep in seed compost in a 3inch pot. The critical part is temperature, these need at least 65F continuous soil temperature (preferably more to maximise germination rates) until germinated, so a propagator, well heated

greenhouse or airing cupboard is ideal - gradually harden off seedlings after the last frost before planting outdoors. The most common reason for poor / zero germination is low / uneven soil temperature coupled with too much moisture. Outdoors from around Jun you can plant direct if the weather is warm, however I would advise planting up to 3 seeds per hole and thinning to the strongest, as you have less time to plant more if any fail. Also the plants will struggle with the shorter growing period if it is a poor wet summer.

WATERING, WEEDING AND MAINTENANCE TIPS Keep the soil moist water copiously around the plants, not over them. Placing a mulch / black polythene before the fruit formation helps later on keeping the fruit clean and ripening. Keep weed free to allow air circulation. Once the fruits start to swell feed every 14 days with a tomato type fertilizer, these are greedy plants. Limit larger fruiting varieties to 2-3 fruits (for giant pumpkins 1).

HARVESTING AND STORAGE TIPS: The most important part of harvesting is making sure you harvest them before the first frost. As the Squash / Pumpkin approach maturity and are ready to harvest, youll notice that the fruit stems will start to dry out and wither. Depending on where you live, you can expect to start harvesting in late Aug to September. Because of the vast varieties of sizes and colours, the rule of thumb for harvesting winter Squash / Pumpkin is when they are a full size and have a deep rich colour. The rinds should be hard to the touch. If you harvest your winter Squashes / Pumpkins too early, they may lack flavour and not keep well. Before the first frost of winter and really wet weather is essential. Cut through the stem and remove the Squash / Pumpkin, leaving about 2 inches of the stem on the fruit. A short stem can lead to rot. This may not be possible with smaller varieties, however. In these cases, preserve as much as the stem as possible. Its also important not to damage your Squash / Pumpkin when harvesting and storing, as they can go bad more quickly. Try avoiding manually breaking the stem at all costs. Store you Squash / Pumpkin in a dry place with temperatures under 60F.

Winter squashes / Pumpkins are best cured before storing. Curing your squash requires storing them in higher temperatures (around 68F or slightly higher) for at least fifteen days (a windowsill or greenhouse is fine). You can then move them to a cool, dry place. Never store the fruit where there is a risk of freezing.

GOURD "Luffa" 12 Seeds

The original luffa sponge variety producing large fruits on vigorous climbing vines which can be dried for your own home grown sponges. Although slow to start, when established and with warm weather these are vigorous plants and can reach 20ft. Sturdy support is vital as the fruits are heavy and must be kept clear of the ground to prevent rotting. Soak seeds overnight before planting. Sow in warmth (65 degrees +) - deep from 4 weeks prior to the last frost under cover. (18-22 days to germinate) Remove weaker seedlings, as they do not transplant well. When 3-4 inches high gradually acclimatise outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Site the plants in a warm sheltered position with good drainage, these will need full sun and warmth to thrive and sturdy support. (110 days from germination) Plant out at least 24apart and avoid feeding or the crop will be reduced . They will start slow and when established and with warmer weather will quickly accelerate. Keep moist throughout the summer and stop watering in autumn as fruits mature. In autumn, mature gourds will begin to turn brown and dry turning yellow/brown, feel light with the outside skin loose. Harvest remaining fruit before the first frost and mature in a warm well-ventilated position. When fully dry the blossom end cap can be broken off, and a vascular bundle can be pulled up the side of the gourd like a zipper. The sponge will pop out and be very wet and white.

Quickly rinse the sponge in water to prevent the plant juices from oxidizing on the sponge and remove the seeds at this time. The sponges can be rinsed in a 10% bleach solution to whiten them.

CARROT "Purple Haze Hybrid F1"

Avoid freshly-manured soil, which may produce hairy, rough roots and will cause forks and splits; Sow seed thinly in rows, 1cm (1/2 in.) deep, 30-40cm (12-16 in.) between the rows as soon as the danger of hard frost has passed. Try to get about 4 seeds per 2cm (1 in.). Thin to 16-20 carrots per 30 cm (1ft.) for fresh eating whilst small and 6-10 carrots per 30 cm (1ft.) for mid season crops, depending on the root size you want, and keep weeded and watered. Dispose of thinned seedlings to avoid attracting Carrot Fly. As they grow, push soil up over any exposed roots to prevent a green shoulder.

Please note these will not germinate in cool, damp conditions, they need heat to get started. Days to Germination: 3-10 Days To Harvest: 125+ days Planting Depth: - 1 inch

Sow inside from 4-6 weeks before the last frost in good quality moist compost at 2 seeds per pot. Ensure seeds are maintained at 70-85F during germination to avoid rotting. Transplant outdoors in garden, when soil is warm in a sunny sheltered location. The vines are best grown on a trellace to ensure straight necked fruit. Add mulch after planting out to prevent soil from drying out.

GOURD "Large Bottle" 12 Seeds

Bottle gourds, easy to cultivate once germinated from seed and best grown up trellis or fences to help retain their shape, if left to grow on the ground they may flatten on one side. They make excellent birdhouses, just leave them to dry, drill an access hole for the birds add a drainage hole or two and hang them up. Dried Bottle Gourd can also be decorated for ornaments and musical instruments.

Since gourds demand a long growing season (100 days plus), they can be started indoors 4 weeks prior to planting outdoors. Gourd seeds should be planted in individual containers 1/2 in deep, such as peat pots, since the roots will not tolerate disturbance during transplanting. Seeds should be scarified (make the seed coat more permeable to air and water) by roughening the side of the seeds with an emery board or sandpaper and then soaking in room temperature water for 24 hours prior to seeding into pots or the garden. Germination must be undertaken above 70F as these seeds will rot in cooler damp conditions. If in doubt place between 2 sheets of wet Kitchen roll and place in a warm, dark location (airing cupboard). Once signs of germination are observed plant immediately. Select a sunny, well-drained site. Prepare soils thoroughly by adding organic matter, such as compost, composted manure or peat moss. Transplant established seedlings 2 feet apart in the row. Gourds are vigorous growers and will readily adapt to a trellis, fence, or arbor for support. Provide consistent watering especially during hot, dry conditions. Hand cultivation should be done with care since gourds have shallow roots and injury can result with deep cultivation.

HOT CHILLI PEPPER "Bhut Jolokia Red"

(Capsicum chinense x frutescens) 10 Seeds

Recognised as the world's hottest chilli pepper by a large margin, Bhut Jolokia is also known by several other names, Borbih jolokia, Naga jolokia, Nagahari, Naga Morich, Raja mirchi etc. The fruits turn from green to a vivid scarlet red when fully mature. Originating and extensively cultivated in Northeastern India heat is variable according to its growing conditions, plants grown in dry conditions cooler conditions will be less hot than those grown in less dry and hotter conditions. Harvest: 100+ days.

The Bhut Jolokia are extremely hard to grow and therefore not for the novice. We want you to succeed, therefore please read how to get the best from your seeds very carefully and closely follow the cultivation advice. Firstly for your own safety we advise wearing gloves and not coming into direct skin contact with the seed. It has the potential to cause severe irritation if you subsequently touch any sensitive areas of skin or eyes. If you do come in contact with the seed this is not an immediate problem but we advise you to wash your hands thoroughly at the earliest opportunity. Bhut Jolokia requires constant soil temperatures of between 75F and 90F for proper germination, optimally 80-85F. In the UK it is best to supply bottom heat

with the aid of a propagation mat or propagator. The seed is unlikely to germinate without additional help in an average UK central heated house. Soil based compost is best and should be fine and free-draining. It must be kept moderately moist, but never being allowed to completely dry out and never allowed to become soggy. If excess moisture is provided the embryo in the seed will rot and they will not germinate. The Bhut Jolokia can take between 20-35 days to germinate depending on the temperature provided, patience is required. They also require a very long growing period, up to 160 days for full maturity Sow from Feb onwards in the UK indoors with heat provided and lightly cover with vermiculite if possible to 1/4in depth. Beware starting too early as the plants require good light levels as seedlings may become leggy. The seed does not require light during germination; however, once the seeds have germinated you need to provide adequate light for the seedlings. A bright draft free south facing windowsill will suffice to maintain healthy growth. Beware over-caring for young seedlings and over-watering. Allow the soil surface to dry and remove any excess water from trays to ensure roots do not rot. If intending to move to a cooler conservatory or greenhouses in early summer gradually acclimatise the plants both to the higher light levels and temperatures. Please note this variety is not suited to outdoor cultivation in the UK at any stage and will not appreciate unheated glasshouses in early spring until the weather warms.

PUMPKIN "Howden"

Ensure the growing location has good drainage and enough humus to ensure the ground will not dry too quickly. Sow in early spring under cover in 3in pots 1in deep for the earliest crop at a minimum temp of 60F, warmth will aid germination rates. Harden off before planting out. Alternatively sow directly outside in late spring allowing 12-18in between plants and 18in between rows. Corn must be planted in blocks, not as a single row to ensure good pollination. Cover any roots that appear at the base with mulch or old compost to retain moisture. Do not allow the crop to dry out during hot weather whilst flowering.

WATER MELON "Crimson Sweet"

60 Seeds

A very productive variety producing large round melons averaging 20-25 lbs which are oval, light green with dark green stripes. The fruit has very sweet flesh that is brilliant red and practically seedless. Good disease resistance. Ready for harvest about 85 days after seeding in warm conditions. Can be grown outside in a warm, sheltered and sunny location, but for the most reliable crops under glass is best. Days to Germination: 5-10 Days To Harvest: 85 in warm conditions Planting Depth: 1/2 to 1 inch Spacing: 2 feet Light: Sunny, Warm, Sheltered Location

Prepare soil by digging and incorporating liberal amounts of well-rotted compost or farmyard manure over-winter. Watermelons thrive in a sunny, warm location Sow April to May 1cm (in) deep, in 7cm (3.5in) pots of free-draining seed sowing mix. Place in a (propagator, airing cupboard) and keep at a temperature of around 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination, usually 5-7 days. When first true leaves develop, transplant into 13cm (5in) pots for a few weeks. Plant out 24 inches apart after carefully hardening off after all risk of frost in a warm sheltered position in full sun or for a more reliable crop under glass. Water regularly and feed with liquid fertilizer every 14 days. Pinch out growing point at the 4 leaf stage and train the laterals (side-shoots) along the row. Hand pollinate if required. STEVIA SEEDS

1) The seedbed (ph 5.5 - 6.5) must be dampened to almost the soils limit of humidity (moderate) for the reception of seeds. The temperature must be 15 - 25 C.

2)- Distribution of seeds: 10-15 gr/m2. - Future distribution of plants: 1 plant/16,6 cm2 (600 plants/m2). - Seedbed dimensions: 10 m. x 1 m. Separation of 50 cm among seedbeds. - Approximately 166-170 m2 of seedbed with plants represent 1 hectare of land. - The texture of the seedbed must be sandy, mixed with organic material and phosphorus.

3) Distribute the seeds on the surface. Do not cover them with sand. Apply pressure slightly on the surface using the palm of your hands to attach the seeds to the surface. Stevia seeds need sunlight for

germination. It is a photoblastic species. That is the reason why it will not germinate if they are covered by sand.

4) Cover the seedbed with a half shadow fabric (50% shadow) until the plants are 1-2 cm high. The fabric will protect the seeds from the wind and dissecation

5) When dampening: Displacements should be prevented. The seedbed must contain humidity near to the soils limit (moderate) until germination. Dampen 2-5 times/day, watering over the half shadow fabric to prevent displacements.

6) Day 1 - 4: Dampen the soil watering over the half shadow fabric to prevent displacements of seeds

7) Day 5 - 7: the seeds are sprouting up.

8) Day 8-60: - The plants are 1-2 cm high. Elevate the half shadow fabric 40 cm and dampen the plants over the cover 3 times/day. - Eliminate the ill looking stevia plants and other non-stevia plants.

9) Day 60-90: The plants that are 10-15 cm high, with a minimum of 20 leaves and strong branches are ready to be transplanted.

STEVIA PLANT MANAGEMENT

1) Transplant.

- It is needed 5 men/day for the transplant of 1000 m2of stevia plants. - The plants to be moved will be transplanted the same day. - Water the soil daily the first 2 weeks after transplant date. - Avoid using claysie soil for transplant. Use soils of middle texture.

2) Water requirements in Paraguay - From collection date to day 20: Kc= 0.25; 1.78 mm/day. - Day 21-46: Kc= 0,56; 2.10 mm/day. - Day 47-70: Kc= 0,82; 6,3 mm/day. * Caballero et al. 2002

*** In Paraguay, the recommendation is to water the Stevia plants daily with small amount of water. Any kind of watering system can be used. However, the most recommended, but not the most used, is the leaking system wich offers the following advantages: - The water is distributed efficiently. - Low use of energy. - It is automatic. - There is a possibility to transplant in any kind of land.

3) Fungi and plagues: There were reported attacks in a few ocations. - Fungus: The damage is almost always minimum, therefore, it is not necessary the use ofchemical agents. In exceptional cases, when the damage is significant, benomil metil-tiofenate are used. - Plagues: there has been no report about significant plague attack in the world. The use of chemical agents has not been recommended in any case until the year 2009.

STEVIA LEAVES MANUAL

By this time, the leaves have their highest concentration of stevioside. - Cut the plants above the land to preserve the roots. - Preserve the 5% of plants to produce seeds increase plantation. - It is required 1 worker per 1000 m2 of land to collect the stevia leaves. - Water the land daily the first 2 weeks the collection. Thereafter, do it twice a week. - Initiate the second collection 70-90 days after the first one. - 4000 kg/Hectare/year will be collected. The plantation will be preserved for 5-6 years without a need of renovation.

2)Drying the stevia leaves. - It is needed 100 m2of drying surface per hectare per week of collection. Avoid this on raining days. - Use synthetic fabrics to cover the area used for drying. - The branches will be exposed to sunlight for 6 hours. The branches must not be interporsed. - The best moment to collect leaves is when they turn brittle with 10-12% of humidity. - Mechanical dryers can be used. Use high pressure air at 70 C degrees. - Collect the leaves with a rake with compressed extensions.

3) Storing the dry leaves: - Store the dry leaves (dark green color) in bags (10 kg/bag) made of synthetic fabric or jute. - The bag must be stored in an environment with the following characteristics: dry, dark, clean and protected from humidity.
