HISTORY OF PROBLEM
Bhagalpur - Sahibganj is a single line B.G. section in Malda Division of Eastern Railway, constructed over highly compressible soil (CH). Bank height is 6.55 m to 7.70 m at bridge approach. As per special report of CBE/ER, initial settlement occurred on 21.11.06. At the Sahibganj end approach of the bridge no.144 (Span 5x18.3 m Plate Girder), there was a misalignment of 50 mm. It was noticed that there were wide cracks at the cess, slope and beyond the toe of bank upto a distance of 50 m away from the track near abutment A1 as shown in Fig. 2. Later on, these cracks developed right under the track also. These cracks were 50 mm to 100 mm wide & 140 mm deep and there was a differential settlement on either side of the track on slope as well as in the ground in the vicinity of the track.

Same night, the static patrollers observed cracking of pier no. P4, which is near abutment A2 at Bhagalpur end. The crack was at a depth of about 3 metres from pier top. The width of the cracks was about 25 mm and there was lateral shift of 20 mm between the bottom and top of the pier at Sahibganj end side.

OBSERVATIONS BY RDSO TEAM

Maximum sinkage was observed about 140 mm on RHS at the toe of approach bank on Sahibganj end approach. The natural factors are involved in the causes of settlement at the bridge approach, which includes softness of base soil, erosion, seepage and creep. It seems that settlement of base soil of the embankment is due to scour depth of Sadonia River on the downstream which got suddenly increased as stated by railway officials. From the visual observation of the site, it is found that bank slope failed on both sides of the river. This may be due to erosion of slope and running water of river stream. Further, due to receding water after monsoon, sudden drawdown in the river water level enhanced instability of side slope close to river stream. This caused the failure of slope on both sides of river. Toe of the approach bank eroded due to running water, causing cracks in pitching and failure of approach bank slope.

5.2

Cracks On Slope And Toe Of Bank

5.3

The base soil of the bridge approach was sunk and in track formation, there were cracks in slope, cess and on the toe of bank and also the track geometry was disturbed due to sinking. Due to these reasons, base soil at the toe has suddenly settled and formation of track developed cracks. It was observed, there was no wing wall constructed at bridge abutments. As remedial measures, railway is providing 11 m rail piling at the toe of bank, stone dust and ballast were unloaded to this spot to maintain the track geometry. Presently, cracks on the pier were filled with cement mortar.

5.5

As a preliminary measure, RDSO team gave following suggestions to the railway officials at the site : i) ii) To prevent scouring of river, river training measures should be adopted. Stone boulders crates alongwith two layers (zig-zag) of rail piling at 1.0 m centre to centre at toe of bank should be provided in the affected length of the bank. Cracks should be filled up with gravel or sand.

iii) Retaining wall should be provided upto suitable length of affected bridge approach in downstream side. iv) Flattening of slope should be carried out and side slope of 2.5:1 should be maintained in the first stage. Turfing shall be provided on slope of bank and sub-bank. v) Proper boulder pitching on slope should be provided upto the HFL. vi) Earthwork shall be done as per RDSOs Guidelines for Earthwork in Railway Project, GE: G-1, July2003. Three undisturbed and three disturbed soil samples & one stone dust sample were collected and received in RDSO on 02.01.2007.

9.2 9.3

Soil at Km 292/11-12 under consideration is CH type, i.e. inorganic clay with high plasticity as per IS classification. Soil contains about 80% to 94% fines and Liquid Limit varies from 53% to 58%. There will be significant loss of shear strength of embankment soil on its saturation. This also explains the behavior of soil, which exhibits subsidence alongwith appearance of large cracks. Moisture content in the soil is found upto 24.69%, which is near the plastic limit. Therefore, the soil is in plastic state. Hence, it is having very low bearing capacity. Natural dry density of soil varies from 1.525 to 1.614gm/cc. These values are very low and therefore, adversely affect the strength of the formation. Shear strength parameters of embankment soil and sub soils are low; therefore, bank slope is not strong enough to withstand even present conditions; as such toe failure of bank has occurred. So, flatter slope should be required.

10.0 SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS

Slope stability analysis has been carried out with SLOPE W software available in RDSO. Slope stability analysis is enclosed as Annexure-II. Analyses indicate that factor of safety for existing slope is inadequate due to poor shear strength and high compressible nature of formation soil. Therefore, it requires strengthening and re-profiling at designed slope. Slope has been redesigned with residual value of shear strength. Residual shear strength parameters, from the laboratory test for designed slope are as follows : i) ii) Effective angle of internal friction (degree) : = 25.16 (Embankment soil), r = 24.00 (Subsoil) Effective cohesion (kg/cm2) : C = 0.21 (Embankment soil), Cr = 0.02 (Subsoil)

With these parameters, slope stability analysis has been carried out as detailed at AnnexuresII & II/2. Thus, re-profiling of formation has to be carried out at 2.5H : 1V slope for the cross-section of A-A and 2.75H : 1V slope for the crosssection of B-B (Annexure-II/1& II/3).

11.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
Following recommendations are made : i) To prevent scouring of problematic abutment, suitable river training measures (one or combination of two as per site condition) as given in Para 808 of Indian Railway Bridge Manual-1998 should be adopted, especially near abutment slopes. Flattening of slope should be carried out. As per recommended profile, side slope of 2.5 H :1 V to be maintained at the cross section A-A and of 2.75 H : 1 V slope for the cross section B-B. Turfing shall be provided on slope of bank.

ii)

iii) Flattening of slope at cross section B-B upto 2.75 H : 1 V will result in situation where the toe of flattened slope would fall into the river portion. To avoid this situation, retaining wall would be required. The retaining wall to contain the flattened slope be provided close to abutment A1 as shown in Fig. 2. iv) Retaining wall/boulder filled gabions should be provided upto suitable length of affected bridge approach at downstream side as well as on upstream side. Design of retaining wall should be ensured as per site condition. v) Under above circumstances, for CH type of soil, minimum 100 cm thick compacted blanket layer is required at top of formation as per Para-4.3.2 and 4.3.4 of Guidelines For Earthwork In Railway Projects GE : G-1, July - 2003, which shall be ensured at site.
