2013 SUMMER CAMP INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Intern Program
The Santa Maria Valley Ys Summer Camp Internship Program is proud to announce its 2nd year in the
making. Our reputation for quality programs and trainings is unsurpassed. We are seeking 16 high school
students who will be working with our camp counselors in teaching youth reading development and
strategies.
The goal of this program is to provide you with a chance to explore future career options and gain work
experience, helping you better define your future goals. The Ys internship is a temporary job position
that provides a person with invaluable work experience and on-the-job training in the following:

Enhances your resume with professional level employment experiences
Experience the rewards and rigors of an entry-level position
Obtain employment references
Put classroom learning into practice
Specialty trainings in job interviews, resume building, and success in the workplace.

Internships are available in several fields. We have many opportunities and can be flexible. The summer
camp internships program begins June 10th and ends on August 2nd. Application deadline is May 31st.

Trainings
Interns will have the opportunity to receive certifications for the following:
1. Mock Job Interview Workshop- June 28, 2013 from 11:00-1:00
2. Resume Workshop- July 12, 2013 from 11:00-1:00
3. Workplace Workshop- July 26, 2013 from 11:00-1:00
4. Hands only CPR-TBD
5. Child Abuse-TBD
6. Camp 101-TBD


Intern Positions
To help us achieve our audacious goals, were seeking bright, enthusiastic individuals who have a strong
interest in issues surrounding the quality of childrens lives and want to develop real-world experience in
a dynamic nonprofit organization. Internships are currently available in the following areas:
1. The YMCA Literacy Camp Counselor (6 positions available. Must be available between
9:00am-12:00pm)
Intern provides leadership through planning, organizing and supervising youth in a variety of literacy
activities. Responsibilities include:

Clocking in and out with a timecard


Reporting to the Unit Leaders and Achievement Gap Coordinator
Keeping an accurate head count of each camper
Assisting Unit Leaders with all camp projects
Acting as a Liaison to the Literacy Program
Assisting with testing; to ensure accurate measures of the Achievement Gap
Implementing the core values of the Y: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility

2. The Y at Guadalupe-Literacy Camp Counselor (4 positions available. Must be available
between 9:00am-12:00pm)
Intern provides leadership through planning, organizing and supervising youth in a variety of literacy
activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

3. The Y Day Camp Registrar (2 position available. Must be available Mondays 9:00-11:00am)

Intern handles registration for all day camp programs to ensure that each child is registered properly,
through computer data input, verbal communication, and handling of money transactions.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Able work on computer/keyboard
Possesses good organizational, communication, and customer service skills.

4. The YMCA Food Preparation Worker (4 positions available. Times indicated below.)
Intern handles snack planning for the entire camp. Interns must be available in the morning, 8:00-
10:00am, and/or in the afternoon, 2:30-5:00pm. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Snack planning for morning and/or afternoon snack
Serving snacks to campers
Washing dishes
Cleaning the kitchen and Big Room area

TB clearance (will receive in the interview)


Two reference letters
High school student with 2.5 GPA or higher.
Certified in CRP, First Aid, and child abuse prevention (The Y provides, no cost to you)
Be open and receptive to feedback and learning opportunities
Participate in trainings
Willingness to engage in productive and challenging work
Conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times; including working in a cooperative
manner within a team oriented environment
Has to love kids, and not afraid of getting dirty!
