Entes acadmicos
La "sociologa" del derecho ha sido un rea relativamente marginal tanto en las facultades de derecho como en las de sociologa, lo cual ha llevado a la creacin de entes centros de investigacin autnomos e independientes. La Asociacin Derecho y Sociedad (Law & Society Association) y el Instituto Internacional de Sociologa Jurdica de Oati son ejemplos de entes acadmicos dedicados al estudio y a la investigacin en sociologa jurdica. La revista Droit et Societ en Francia tambin es un medio importante de difusin en temas relacionados con este campo de estudio. En Colombia, es particularmente reconocido el Centro de Estudios de Derecho, Justicia y Sociedad (Dejusticia).
Metodologa de investigacin
En cuando a metodologa de investigacin, la sociologa del derecho emplea mtodos de las ciencias sociales y de la estadstica para conocer el comportamiento de los operadores jurdicos (aquellos de los que depende el derecho aplicable, como los legisladores o los jueces) y los destinatarios de las normas. La investigacin sociojurdica es, en un sentido amplio, investigacin social, por lo cual esta implica realizar trabajo emprico o trabajo de campo, como entrevistas, sondeos, encuestas, muestreos estadsticos, etc.
