Healthy Church Initiative UMC Annual Conference June 7-10 In Des Moines
The Healthy Church Initiative is about growing fruitful, vibrant congregations, changing lives through Jesus Christ. It is a process designed to transform churches. The focus is on providing resources and strategies to church pastors, staff, laity, and congregations so that they in turn will be able to reach new people for Christ and become the church God wants them to be in their community. There are three main components to this process: 1. Continuous Learning 2. Coaching 3. Consultation We began this process September of 2011 with the continuous learning stage. I attended the Pastor sessions (once a month), and we had two laity who attended the laity sessions (that began in January of 2012). For each session we were assigned a book to read before our sessions. Each session included peer mentoring, leadership teaching, action plans, and spiritual development. The first year of these were Pastor Leadership Development, and Laity Leadership Development. Over the summer months we decided to move forward in the process towards consultation. This meant that beginning September of 2012, I attended a group made up of 2 other pastors and our facilitator that were also moving towards the consultation phase of the program. We still have a book for each session, and our time together looks similar to the year before (with different content). We are assigned a trained coach to hold us accountable and to guide us on the next steps. Our Parish Council put together the Self Study. (The Surveys that were filled out during worship on December 9th were a part of this process.) The Self Study was then sent to our Consultation Team. The Consultation Team will write 5 prescriptions specific to our church with benchmarks. This whole process is to help us to reach new people for Christ and become the church God wants us to be in our community! Consultation Weekend April 5th-7th Prescriptions Presented/Read After Church on April 7th Town Hall Meetings for questions after Church on April 14th, and 21st. If you are aware of someone in need of a pastoral call, please inform Pastor Cory at the office, 9574960 or her cell 404-788-4997. She would rather hear from multiple sources than from no one at all. In these times of privacy rights, hospitals and nursing homes may not divulge information relating to a resident or patient, so it is very important that members and/or their families let the Pastor know of all needs for pastoral care.
