the bench cheering every shot, the New York City
WTT KingPins presented by GEICO finished the
inaugural Professional Bowlers Association League
championship match with a string of seven consecu-
tive strikes to defeat the Motown Muscle, 440-407,
and claim the Elias Cup at Woodland Bowl.
The KingPins, the top qualifiers among eight teams
that competed in five preliminary rounds earlier in the
season in Detroit, put together a string of five strikes
to take a 202-181 lead after the first game of the two-
game, total pinfall championship match. But the
Motown Muscle, owned by former Pittsburgh Steelers
star Jerome Bettis, rallied to tie the match after five
frames of game two.
In the Baker format contest, where each of the five team member bowls two frames to
complete a game, the tide turned when the two teams switched lanes after five frames. After
struggling to strike on the right lane, the KingPins didnt miss in their final five frames on
the left lane. Consecutive strikes by Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C.; Jack Jurek of
Lackawanna, N.Y.; John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; Scott Norton of Mission
Viejo, Calif., and newly-crown Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions winner Pete
Weber of St. Ann, Mo., locked up the title for Kings
team.
After throwing the decisive strike in the 10th frame,
Weber benched himself and brought in KingPins sup-
plemental draft pick Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., to fin-
ish off the match. The only woman in the PBA League
field threw two more strikes to conclude the contest.
We knew the Muscle had to come back on the right
lane after five frames and they hadnt bowled on that
lane in 10 frames, Weber said. We ate up some oil and
they just didnt make the adjustments.
My team is the best team. I knew from the start we
were going to be hard to beat, he added. We started
communicating in Detroit and I knew at that point we
were going to be something special.
Its an honor and a privilege to have Billie Jean King as our team owner, Weber con-
tinued, and its an honor and a privilege to give her the first Elias Cup trophy.
King, who admitted she doesnt know a great deal about bowling, was an avid cheer-
leader for her team.

The Morris County USBC Bowling Associations
Hall of Fame Committee has announced this years
inductees. William A. Henderson, Romeo A. Lerro,
and Anthony M. Parisi will be inducted for Bowling
Achievement, and Richard S. Mark will go in under
the Special Services category.
William Henderson has been a member of the coun-
ty association for more than 25 years. In his fifth year
of bowling, he was named Bowler of the Year by the
Express-Times. Further, he has been a junior coach at
Oakwood Lanes for more than nine years. His best
ten and fifteen year league average is 220. He has
posted 24-plus 300 games and nine 800 series. He
resides in Washington (Warren County) with his wife
Jan, and daughter Jenna.
Romeo A. Lerro has been a member of the county
association for more than 24 years. He is a third-gen-
eration bowler and pro shop owner. He has bowled in
leagues at Hanover, Dover, Plaza, Rockaway and
Circle Lanes. He has 12 perfect games, and many
800s. He and Greg Gorgodian, another Hall of Famer,
earned a national high two-man game of 599 in 1998.
Romeo and his wife, Laurie, reside in Bound Brook
and have two children, Cassandra and Romeo, Jr.
Anthony M. Parisi has been a member of the asso-
ciation for more than 18 years. He is a bronze level
certified junior coach. He has posted more than 16
games of 300 and carries a ten and 15-year average of
220. He has bowled in 10 plus USBC National tour-
naments and more than 10 New Jersey State
Tournaments. While he is an accomplished bowler,
his passion is in service to the sport through coaching
juniors and having run the Pepsi Youth Scholarship
in-house qualifier tournaments at Plaza Lanes. He
also chairs the Adult-Junior tournaments at Plaza. He
resides in Summit.

BOONTON, NJ - The shot at
Boonton Lanes was somewhat
tricky for Stan Niemiecs youth
travelers as only two 600 sets
were recorded, lowest output since
session three last October. Further,
those two sets were below the aver-
ages of the bowlers in question. Jake
Rollins average now stands at a
thirty-game 241 after he posted a
labored 223-210-241-674. His Fair
Lawn squad dropped a tight
encounter to Bowler City II, 2599-
2581 as Jake endured a tenth frame
split in the finale while BC IIs
anchor Justin Garcia struck out for
222 and the surprising turnabout.
The matchs other top posts were the
winners James Kane 210 and Kyle
Schellberg 205. Former Ramapo
all-star Kevin Macchia, averaging
213, barely managed to maintain it
with 229-225-627 as his struggling
Holiday II quartet was swept by
Bowler City III. The only other
deuce on the pair was the victors
Patrick Suceros 212.
With two sessions remaining, the
three top teams all lost their match-
es, leaving pacesetter Bowler City
I with a magic number of six. As a
testimony to the leagues parity,
only four points separate the five
teams chasing the league leaders.
Boonton is one of them and after a
horrendous opener in which they
were buried by a hundred forty-
seven sticks, came roaring back to
shock BC I, 2592-2568 behind the
collaborative efforts of the
Thundering Trio: Patrick
Teshima 213-200, Karl
Kattermann 212-203 and Justin
Puchalski 210. After a sterling 851
net in which the entire squad fired
deuces [John Draney 237, Ryan
Perez 208, Vinny Santoro and Rob
Gilbert, Jr 203], BC I went cold,
with Rob Gilbert, Jrs 212 the best
the team could muster the rest of
the contest.
In a rags to riches effort,
Holidays Dillon Cilento doubled
his opening score with a 220 and
closed with 248, helping his team
salvage the finale from Montvale,
938-827, yet fall in wood, 2607-
2596. Anchor Brian Rizzi fired a
224 middle game and Frank Magyar
finished with 208. Montvales soli-
tary deuce came from 12-year-old
Matt Russell who converted a pair
of washouts to tally a season-best
clean 233.
Led by Mariah McKelveys 180-
475, her finest showing of the year,
Greg Khans 194 and vastly
improved Alijah Jackson with 190-
532, Bowler City IV coasted to a
sweep of seven points from the
vacancy.
