TRUE RECONCILIATION WHY THE COVER UP?

T he Gospel teaches us that
reconciliation, true rec-
onciliation, can only be the
fruit of conversion, a change
of heart, a new way of think-
ing. It teaches us that only the
power of God's love can
change our hearts and make
us triumph over the power of
sin and division. When we

were "dead through our
sins" (Eph 2:5), his love and mercy brought us recon-
ciliation and new life in Christ. This is the heart of the
Apostle Paul's teaching, and it is important for us to
remind ourselves: only God's grace can create a new
heart in us! Only his love can change our "hearts of
stone" (cf. Ezek 11:19) and enable us to build up, rather
than tear down. Only God can make all things new!

f you’re wondering why all the statues of
our church are covered with purple cloth,
here’s the answer.
In the traditional Mass, on the Fifth Sunday
of Lent, the Gospel of St. John, chapter 8, was
read. Therein, Jesus is confronted by the hos-
tile and corrupt leaders of the people. They
pick up stones in an attempt to stone him then
and there. But then we are told, “ ... Jesus hid
Himself and went out of the temple.” In the
old rite, the sacred images were then immedi-
ately covered (precisely at the mention of the
words, “Jesus hid Himself”). For practical rea-
sons, this veiling” of the statues was later
moved to a time outside of the Mass, i.e., im-
mediately following vespers the night before.
The crucifix, in particular, is covered in purple
cloth to symbolize how Christ’s divinity was
hidden during the time of His Sacred Passion
and Death.
Statues are covered with purple cloth from
the Fifth Sunday of Lent until the beginning of
the Easter Vigil and crucifixes until the cele-
bration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday.

CUBRIENDO LAS IMAGENES
S i se están preguntando porqué todas las estatuas de
nuestro templo están cubiertas con mantos morados, he
aquí la respuesta. En la Misa tradicional, en el Quinto
Domingo de Cuaresma, se leyó el Evangelio de san Juan,
capítulo 8. En este pasaje, Jesucristo es confrontado por los
hostiles y corruptos líderes del pueblo. Ellos juntaban piedras
en un intento por apedrearlo, pero san Juan nos dice, “ ... Jesús
se escondió y salió del templo.”
En el rito antiguo, las sagradas imágenes eran entonces
inmediatamente cubiertas (precisamente a la mención de las
palabras, “Jesús se escondió”). Por razones prácticas, esta
“velación” de las estatuas después se hizo en un tiempo fuera
de la misa, vgr., inmediatamente siguiendo la víspera de la
noche anterior. El crucifijo, en particular, se cubre con tela
morada para simbolizar que la divinidad de Cristo estuvo
oculta durante su sagrada Pasión y muerte. Las estatuas se
cubren con tela morada desde el Quinto Domingo de
Cuaresma hasta el comienzo de la Vigilia Pascual, y los
crucifijos hasta la celebración de la Pasión del Señor el
Viernes Santo.

NO TODAS LAS ‘IGLESIAS
CATÓLICAS’ LO SON
Puede ser que el templo se mira como
un templo Católico o que tienen allí
una imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe o
de otros Santos Católicos. También
puede ser que el llamado ‘Padre’ se viste
como sacerdote y que allí dan ‘Misas’.
Nada de esto garantiza que son Católicos
verdaderos en comunión con el Papa
Benedicto.
Tristemente, hay un numero creciente de sectas nuevas
que insisten que son 'Católicas' pero rechazan la autoridad del
Papa y las demás doctrinas Católicas. Engañan a la gente no
instruida que va en busca de los Sacramentos de la Iglesia.
Muchas de estas sectas son ‘negocios’ más que nada y así se
están aprovechando de la gente crédula. Los señores
encargados de aquellas sectas, aunque se visten de ‘Padres,’
no están interesados en la salvación del alma.
¡Cuidado con aquellas sectas! Y anote bien: un Católico
debe asistir a Misa y recibir los Sacramentos solamente en
una parroquia ‘registrada’ con la Iglesia Católica, Apostólica
y Romana. Si no, los llamados ‘Sacramentos’ recibidos no
son lícitos en los ojos de la Iglesia Católica, Apostólica y
Romana.
Si usted tiene una duda sobre una Iglesia específica, llame
a la notaría parroquial. Tenemos en la oficina un directorio de

CRUCIS CADA VIERNES
Las Estaciones del Vía crucis se rezará
solemnemente cada viernes después de la
Misa de 6:30pm en el templo de los
Santos Inocentes.
También se rezará el Vía crucis en frente
del Centro de Abortos en el 2777 Long
Beach Blvd. a las 7:30pm.

AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA CUARESMALES

Ayuno y Abstinencia durante La
Cuaresma
Abstinencia en todos los viernes de
cuaresma y el Miércoles de Ceniza y el
Viernes Santo.
No comer carne en los días de abstinencia. Los católicos de 14 años en
adelante están obligados de abstenerse de carne. No están obligadas las
mujeres amamantando o embarazadas.
Ayuno el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo
El ayuno es comer solo una comida completa para mantener la fuerza.
Luego dos pequeñas comidas, sin carnes y peniténciales son permitidas
de acuerdo a las necesidades de cada uno, pero al juntar las dos comidas
deben ser equivalentes a una comida completa. Comer sólidos entre
comidas no es permitido.
Los católicos de18 a 59 años tienen la obligación de ayunar. No tienen
obligación las mujeres amamantando o embarazadas.

This is a beautiful Lenten devotion which
is highly recommended by saints and holy
popes.
STATIONS will also be prayed at 7:30pm
in front of the Long Beach Abortion mill
located at 2777 Long Beach Blvd. Please

FAST & ABSTINENCE DURING LENT

Abstinence on all the Fridays of
Lent, and on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday.
No meat may be eaten on days of absti-
nence. Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from
meat. Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.
Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's
strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are permit-
ted according to one's needs, but they should not together equal
the one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals is not per-
mitted.
Catholics from age 18 through age 59 are bound to fast. Again,
invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.
