3rd Grade Common Core State Standard for Comprehension and Collaboration: CC.3.SL.2 Comprehension and Collaboration: Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Know: Textbook chapters, articles, paragraphs, sentences, or passages all have topics and main ideas. The topic is the broad, general theme or message. The main idea is the important point" being expressed. Details support the main idea by telling how, what, when, where, why, how much, or how many. Understand: Determining the main idea and supporting details helps you understand the point(s) the writer is trying to make. Understanding the relationship between main ideas and details will increase your reading comprehension. Do: Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. academic.cuesta.edu/acasupp/as/308.HTM For LB and DH: they may have a hard time reading a third grade passage, so the text may have to be read aloud to these students for the assessments.

2. Pre-assessment and post-assessment of the Finding the Main Idea unit are attached. 3. At two points during the unit, I will assess the students progress. In the first part of the unit I will primarily focus on finding the main idea before moving on to finding the details that support the main idea. So after 4 days (or when I think the students grasp the idea) I will distribute an assessment on just finding the main idea. Once the students master this, I will move on to finding the supporting details. After I think they understand the concept, I will give them an assessment on finding the supporting details when they are already given the main idea. I will then combine the whole concept of finding the main idea and supporting details together before giving the post-assessment. The on-going assessments will be given after the lesson has been completed to do at their desk during the seat work station.
