2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Due to the fact that there are only two characters featured in my title sequence, there are only a few social groups represented. These are; youth, the elderly and the psychologically challenged. During my title sequence, the social group youth is only represented for a short period of time, as the sequence focusses on the changing of her identity. I feel the main way in which she is presented during this time is as insignificant.
A common theme of media productions that focus on the younger generation is the search for identity and feeling of insignificance. This is seen in programmes such as Misfits where Simon felt so unimportant that his power was the ability to disappear. In my sequence Bella is insignificant to June, as she is valued only for how she can be transformed. This is shown through two main ways throughout the sequence. Firstly, the initial shot in which we see Bella, or part of, is a close up of her eye. This means that initially she is mysterious to us, as we know little about her age or appearance. The confusion reflected through the way in which she looks around the room adds to this, as the antagonist cares little for her safety or happiness, and therefore we see how to June she is insignificant as a person. It also suggests Bellas understanding that she is not important to the old lady, as she is scared and therefore seems to understand that she will be mistreated. In the same way the mid shot used towards the end of the sequence, revealing Bellas transformation, shows the audience that the previous Bella no longer exists in the eyes of June as her identity has been taken and is insignificant in the eyes of our antagonist.

The social group of the elderly is presented for a large amount of my title sequence. The main way in which I feel June is presented is as able- contrasting societies traditional view. Often, in television and other forms of media, the elderly are presented to be weak and incapable, relying on the help of others. Figures such as Dot Cotton in eastenders whom whilst being opinionated and a memorable figure,

could be seen as weak and is often sick, such as Dots eventual death due to illness. In some ways my media product supports this traditional representation as Jun subdues Bella through gases and therefore does not use her strength to make her unconscious. However contrasting to this the representation she is not reliant on anyone else and has been able to carry out such a scheme without the help of anyone else.

Another Social group represated in my coursework is the mentally unstable. The reason that June is so focussed on creating a human doll is because she no longer likes the way sher looks and feels by changing Bellas appearance and being able to control her she remains youthful, and further still fulfills an ocd compulsion for perfection. OCD and similar mental challenges is a theme that often comes up in soap operas and other types of media product, as it is a common disorder. In programmes such as Home and Away when April developed the disease viewers were able to gage that the disorder began to completely control her. In the same way, in my title sequence, the absurdity of what June is doing to Bella seems to reflect and abnormal compulsion as someone in their right frame of mind would not do that to another person. However, whilst the traditional presentation of such disorders provokes sympathy the ways in which June is compulsed causes the viewer to feel anger and distaste.
