Thank you again, Pasadena Covenant, for all your effort in helping with the Bad Weather Shelter for the winter of 2012-2013. On April 6th, Friends in Deed (the new name for ECPAC, which runs the BWS) honored the volunteers who served from the various churches and groups in the area. Here are a few facts to give you an idea of the importance of this ministry to so many in need:

905 unduplicated guest were served (533 men, 245 women, 76 boys, and 51 girls). Some nights we had to turn people away because of limited space. Average number of guests per night: 153 adults per night, 9 families per night and 19 children per night. The Shelter was open 74 nights (15 of them weather activated nights). 12 households were moved into permanent, stable housing and 5 more households are in the process because of the BWS ministry. 2 weddings were performed for BWS guests, thanks to Pastor Connie DeVaughn and Altadena Baptist Church.

The BWS is a wonderful ministry, serving so many, but it is in jeopardy of being unable to operate next winter. Please pray for funding for the BWS ministry so it may continue to provide shelter to those in need for the 2013-2014 winter. - Peace and Justice Ministry Team

PCC Kids Ministry Summer Ministry Opportunities

Summer may be a time of slowing down in some places, but in our childrens and youth ministry, its when we shift into high gear for concentrated ministry! Its an exciting time of growth and opportunity. In particular, we have ministry needs and opportunities in three key areas: Family Camp, Summer Sunday School, and Jump Startour new neighborhood outreach. Contact Vikki at vrandall@pasadenacovenant.org for more info.

Summer Sunday School

Our kids ministry is growing! This is a great time to jump into this ministry, when we need staff to cover for vacations. Sunday School meets Sundays at 10:30 am. Volunteers typically serve 1-2 Sundays a month. We particularly need volunteers for our nursery (lots of new babies being born!) and preschool (2s & 3s and PreK/K) classes.

Neighborhood Back-to-School Daycamp for 1st-5th gr. Mon-Fri. Aug. 5-9 9 am -12:30 pm
Jump Start! is something new & excitinga back-to-school daycamp for Madison kids (1st-5th graders), focusing on literacy skills. Help us reach out and serve our neighbors! You may choose to serve just one day, two or three days, or join us for the full five mornings of fun and excitement! There are lots of ways to serve: helping kids one-on-one with reading & writing skills cooking or baking with a group of kids leading games or crafts sharing gardening or other hobbies helping to prepare and serve lunch

Weekly Programs
Oikas: Sunday Mornings, 9 am 10:15 am
Oikas is the Greek work for House. On Sunday Mornings, we come to the House of God to dive into Gods word through authentic worship and relevant Biblical teaching. Oikas is a place where we can connect with each other and with God in a deep and authentic way.

Selah: Wednesday Night Worship and Small Groups, 6:30 8:30 pm

Selah is a great starting point for plugging into PCSM! Selah is a word that is used throughout the book of Psalms to remind us to Pause or Stop and listen and thats exactly what we want to do on Wednesday nights! At Selah we take a break from our busy week to play crazy games, worship though song, and get to know each other on a deeper level in gender and age specific small groups.

Cross-Cultural Communication Specialists Praise & Prayer Requests

Steve and Nancy Stuckey are long-time members of Pasadena Covenant Church and serve as one of our cross-cultural workers. Steve writes: I have served with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for 42 years. For much of that time, I was in a senior management role, which meant that I knew a little about a lot of things. In my sunset years as a pastoral care specialist, I now know a lot about a very little thing. But it turns out that the little thing is quite important. I focus my attention on the spiritual experiences of InterVarsity staff in order to help them abide and grow in their relationship with Jesus. In the same way that you would hope that your family therapist was spending quality time with her children or your cardiologist was avoiding the triple whopper with bacon and cheese, so you would hope that the local IVCF staff member caring for the soul of your child had an active prayer life and was avoiding internet pornography. The average staff member of our organization stays for five years so the vast majority of the young adults I see are in their twenties and early thirties. They are very bright, energetic, and highly motivated to change the world. It is an honor to be involved with them. Those who leave go on to serve as pastors, missionaries, and leaders in the non-profit world. The most persistent challenge that our staff face is over commitment and unbridled busyness. Its the disease of our always-on, technological culture and a potential enemy to our deeper life with God. Through the use of silent retreat days, spiritual direction, and making art, I try to help folks make space to listen to God and their own souls. Prayer Requests: I will be leading a spiritual formation retreat for 35 InterVarsity staff in San Diego on May 13-15 and a Making Space for God Day for Los Angeles staff on May 20. Pray that the Lord will call the restless hearts of my friends and help them to listen for his voice. Update on the Marks: Dave and Wendy Mark, members of Pasadena Covenant Church, currently serve as Regional Coordinators for Covenant World Mission in Latin America and the Caribbean. After 30 years of serving cross-culturally, they will retire at the end of this year. In the fall they want to visit those who have supported them throughout their ministry, and are hoping to be able to come the Pasadena Covenant to say thank you in person.
