4. Authority of the Bible depends on the authority of the Church.

II. The Two Creation Stories

A. The Catholic, literal, interpretation
~ Neither of these stories are intended to be a chronological account.
~ They are complimentary...NOT contradictory.
~ We don't know the exact details nor timing of creation it was not the human author's intent to
write a scientific treatise.

~ As Catholics we are free to believe in evolution or not to believe in evolution.

III. The Myth of Adam & Eve
A. The nine things that the Church teaches:
1. The creation of all things out of nothing by God at the beginning of time (including the
creation of time).
2. The special creation of man.
3. The creation of woman from man.
4. All of humanity is descended from an original pair of human beings - i.e. Adam and Eve.
5. Adam and Eve were created in an original state of holiness, justice, and immortality.
6. A divine command was laid upon man to prove his obedience to God [do not eat from the
tree ]
7. The transgression of that Divine Command at the instigation of Satan.
8. The loss of the state of holiness, justice, and immortality of our 1st parents [because of their
disobedience, Adam and Eve were kicked out of Paradise].
9. The promise of a future Redeemer, a Savior [Genesis 3:15, the protoevangelium, the first

V. Inerrancy of Scripture
A. God is the primary author of scripture.

It is absolutely wrong and forbidden either to narrow inspiration to certain parts only of Holy
Scripture or to admit that the sacred writer has erred. For the system of those who, in order to rid themselves
of these difficulties, do not hesitate to concede that divine inspiration regards the things of faith and morals,
and nothing beyond...this system cannot be tolerated.
It follows that those who maintain that an error is possible in any genuine passage of the
sacred writings either pervert the Catholic notion of inspiration or make God the author of such error.
...all the Fathers and Doctors [of the Church] agreed that the divine
writings, as left by
the [sacred authors], are free from all error, [and] they labored earnestly, with no less skill than reverence, to
reconcile with each other those numerous passages which seem at variance.
St. Augustine writing to St. Jerome: On my own part I confess that it is only to those books of
Scripture which are now called canonical that I have learned to pay such honor and reverence as to believe
most firmly that none of their writers has fallen into any error. And if in these books I meet anything which
seems contrary to truth I shall not hesitate to conclude that the text is faulty or that the translator has not
expressed the meaning of the passage, or that I myself do not understand.

I] that God is the author of Holy Scripture, and they put forward again the opinion, already often condemned,

III. Three Possibilities Regarding Christianity

denomination, are members. In this church, either:
(1) Doctrine does not matter, or
(2) Conflicting and contradictory doctrines are acceptable.
C. Jesus established one Church, which is visible and in which doctrine matters and does not conflict.
This church contains the fullness of truth as revealed by God; all others have partial truth, at best.

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of [His] disciples that are not written in this book. But these
are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you
may have life in His name.

Faith is a personal act - the free response of the human person to the initiative of God who reveals himself.
But faith is not an isolated act. No one can believe alone, just as no one can live alone. You have not given
yourself faith as you have not given yourself life. The believer has received faith from others and should hand
it on to others. Our love for Jesus and for our neighbor impels us to speak to others about our faith. Each
believer is thus a link in the great chain of believers. I cannot believe without being carried by the faith of
others, and by faith I help support others in the faith.

E. Why waste your time praying to the Saints when you can go straight to Jesus?

4. If there are no righteous ones on earth (Rom 3:10),and therefore, according to Protestant
argument, Mary was not sinless, who was James talking about in 5:16?

F. Biggest objection to Catholic teaching - 1 Tim 2:5; Jesus' role as sole mediator between God and
man

one who is true God and true man; only by Jesus' blood are we saved; but, as members of Jesus' Body, we
can share in His role as mediator as He allows us to

Summary: Scripture tells us that there is only one Foundation, only Lord, only one Judge, only one Father,
only one Teacher, just as it tells us there is one Mediator; yet, Scripture also shows us that there is more than
one judge,
more than one foundation, more than one lord, more than one judge, more than one father,
more than one teacher. Does scripture contradict itself? No! Jesus is the head of the Body. Jesus grants
different members
of the Body the graces to share in His role as
foundation, as lord, as judge, as
father, as teacher, and yes, as mediator. The members of the Body are allowed...through, with, and in Jesus
Christ...to share in the grace and glory of the Head, Jesus Christ. And, as we have seen, Scripture is full of
examples of people sharing in the mediation of Christ.
