I. Authority of the Pope depends on authority of the Church
A. Principles pertaining to the Church
1. Jesus founded one, and only one, Church; Mt.16:18 - Church not churches
2. Jesus established an authoritative Church;
a. People need to know truth: Jn 8:32, Jn 14:6,Jn 18:37
b. Where to go for truth? The Church; 1 Tim 3:15
c. The Church has authority; Mt 18:15-18
3. The Church is visible and has unity in faith and morals.
a. Visible; Mt 18:15-18-Tell it to the Church
b. Eph 1:22-23; Church is the Body of Christ, the fullness of Christ (Eph 5:23), Jesus,
the Head, has physical and spiritual aspects, so the Body, the Church, has the same.
c. Jn 17:22-23; world has to see the unity

d. Unity of doctrine; Acts 4:32, Eph 4:4-6, 1 Cor 1:10; Jn 17:11,20-22 - one as Father
and Son are one... do the Father and Son disagree on doctrine? Any doc-trine?
B. Authority of the Bible is dependent upon the Church
1. Bible is inerrant; no errors of any kind
2. How do we know which books should be in the Bible? Sola Scriptura is inadequate because
the Bible does not contain a list of books that should be in the Bible.
3. The Church has the authority to decide; the Church gave us the canon of Scripture-Council
of Rome (382 A.D.), Council of Hippo (393 A.D.), Council of Carthage (397 A.D.)
4. Authority of the Bible depends on the authority of the Church.

II. Apostolic Authority

A. The Church's authority is apostolic authority [Principle #4]
B. Mt 28:18-19 and Jn 20:21; Jesus sent with all authority in Heaven and Earth, Jesus sends the
apostles in the same manner.
C. Lk 10:16; He who hears you hears Me

D. Characterized by charism of Infallibility; Mt 28:18-19 (always with you), Jn 14:16-17, 26 (Holy Spirit
with you forever and will teach you all things), Jn 16:13 (Holy Spirit guides them into all truth) [Principle #5]
E. Infallibility prevents teaching error in faith & morals
F. Acts 8:30-31 (need a guide); 2 Ptr 1:20 (private interpretation is not scriptural); 1 Jn 4:6 (there is a
group of men we need to listen to); 1 Ptr 1:12 (men who preached the good news through the HS)

G.Apostolic Succession-the Apostles passed on their authority, the authority given to them by Jesus,
to others and instructed them to do the same [Principle #6]
1. Mt 28:19-20
a. Make disciples of all nations; 1 Cor 12:28 (in the Church, first apostles)
b. Jesus with them to the end of the age; but they died...yet, their successors live on
c. Mission of the Church is a teaching mission; Jesus said teach , not go and write
2. Acts 1:15-26; apostolic succession; apostles occupied offices ; when office holder died, he
was replaced-succession
3. Office of bishop; 1 Tim 3:1
4. Passing on an inheritance ; 1 Tim 1:2, 2 Tim 1:2, 2:1; 1 Tim 1:18, Titus 1:4, 1 Cor 4:17
5. Apostolic authority is passed on; 2 Tim 1:13-14, 2 Tim 2:2, Titus 1:5-7, 1 Tim 1:3, 4:11-13
6. Authority passed on by laying on of hands ; 2 Tim 1:6, 1 Tim 1:18, 4:14, 5:22

III. The Pope

A. Pope is the Bishop of Rome; Successor of Peter
B. Mt 16:15-19; revelation from the Father, the Rock, keys of kingdom, binding and loosing

C. Is 22:20-22; keys-authority, father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, opening and shutting - binding
and loosing, house of David
D. Primacy of Peter among the Apostles
1. Mt 16:15-19-only Peter is given the keys
2. Jn 21:15-19-Peter appointed shepherd
3. Peter's name is mentioned almost twice as many times as all other Apostles together; Peter
listed
first among Apostles; Peter is first to act (1st half of Acts of Apostles)
4. Acts 4:18-20 and Mt 23:2-3, O.T. seat of authority was the chair of Moses ; chair of Peter is
N.T. seat of authority
5. Lk 22:31-32; Jesus prays specifically for Peter to strengthen his brethren

E. 2 Peter 1:12-15 and John 21:15-19
1. Peter is talking to mature Christians; 2 Ptr 1:1
2. God's Word never goes unfulfilled; Is 55:11
3. Peter is going to do something which will enable Christians to always and at any time be
reminded of certain things; What did he do?
4. Jn 21:15-19; Jesus about to return to Heaven, Jesus appoints Peter as shepherd of the
flock and Jesus shows Peter how Peter is to die
5. 2 Ptr 1:14, Peter soon to go to Heaven as Jesus showed him; Peter is going to do
something which will allow Christians to always and at any time be reminded
6. How did Peter fulfill his promise? Nothing in Scripture, so as a Protestant I would have no
answer; as a Catholic, I would suggest that
Peter imitated Christ and appointed a shepherd for the flock

I. Literal vs. Literalist Interpretation
Example: Genesis 1:1-2:2 vs. Genesis 2:4-22
A. Literal Interpretation...YES!
~CCC #116
~Literal interpretation of scripture takes into account the meaning that the author intended to
convey.
Example: It's raining cats & dogs.
Meaning: Its raining hard.
B. Literalist Interpretation...NO!
~ Literalist interpretation takes the exact meaning of the words without consideration of popular
cultural meaning or the meaning that the author intended to convey.
Example: It's raining cats & dogs.
Meaning: Cats & dogs are falling from the sky.

II. The Two Creation Stories
Genesis 1:1-2:2 vs. Genesis 2:4-22
A. The Catholic, literal, interpretation
~ Neither of these stories are intended to be a chronological account.
~ They are complimentary...NOT contradictory.
~ We don't know the exact details nor timing of creation it was not the human author's intent to
write a scientific treatise.
B. Catholics & the Theory of Evolution
~ As Catholics we are free to believe in evolution or not to believe in evolution.
~ Evolution is a THEORY, not a scientific fact.

III. The Myth of Adam & Eve
A. The nine things that the Church teaches:
1. The creation of all things out of nothing by God at the beginning of time (including the
creation of time).
2. The special creation of man.
3. The creation of woman from man.
4. All of humanity is descended from an original pair of human beings - i.e. Adam and Eve.
5. Adam and Eve were created in an original state of holiness, justice, and immortality.
6. A divine command was laid upon man to prove his obedience to God [do not eat from the
tree ]
7. The transgression of that Divine Command at the instigation of Satan.
8. The loss of the state of holiness, justice, and immortality of our 1st parents [because of their
disobedience, Adam and Eve were kicked out of Paradise].
9. The promise of a future Redeemer, a Savior [Genesis 3:15, the protoevangelium, the first
good news ]. Reference: Denzinger: #2123

V. Inerrancy of Scripture
A. God is the primary author of scripture.
~ CCC 105-107
B. Providentissimus Deus, Pope Leo XIII, 1893
It is absolutely wrong and forbidden either to narrow inspiration to certain parts only of Holy
Scripture or to admit that the sacred writer has erred. For the system of those who, in order to rid themselves
of these difficulties, do not hesitate to concede that divine inspiration regards the things of faith and morals,
and nothing beyond...this system cannot be tolerated.
It follows that those who maintain that an error is possible in any genuine passage of the
sacred writings either pervert the Catholic notion of inspiration or make God the author of such error.
...all the Fathers and Doctors [of the Church] agreed that the divine
writings, as left by
the [sacred authors], are free from all error, [and] they labored earnestly, with no less skill than reverence, to
reconcile with each other those numerous passages which seem at variance.
St. Augustine writing to St. Jerome: On my own part I confess that it is only to those books of
Scripture which are now called canonical that I have learned to pay such honor and reverence as to believe
most firmly that none of their writers has fallen into any error. And if in these books I meet anything which
seems contrary to truth I shall not hesitate to conclude that the text is faulty or that the translator has not
expressed the meaning of the passage, or that I myself do not understand.

V. Inerrancy of Scripture, cont.

C. Divino Afflante Spiritu, Pope Pius XII, 1943

...not merely because [the books of the canon] contain revelation without error, but because,
having been written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God for their author...When,
subsequently, some Catholic writers, in spite of this solemn definition of Catholic doctrine, by which such
divine authority is claimed for the 'entire books with all their parts' as to secure freedom from any error
whatsoever, [when these Catholic writers] ventured to restrict the truth of Sacred Scripture solely to matters of
faith and morals...Leo XIII...justly and rightly condemned these errors. - DAS #1
Finally, it is absolutely wrong and forbidden 'either to narrow inspiration to certain passages of
Holy Scripture, or to admit that the sacred writer has erred' - DAS #3
For as the substantial Word of God became like to men in all things,'except sin,' so the words
of God, expressed in human language, are
made like to human speech inn every respect, except error. DAS #37
D. Humani Generis, Pope Pius XII, 1950
For some go so far as to pervert the sense of the Vatican Council's definition [Vatican Council
I] that God is the author of Holy Scripture, and they put forward again the opinion, already often condemned,
which asserts that immunity from error extends only to those parts of the Bible that treat of God or of moral and
religious matters. - HG #22
E. Vatican Council II, Dei Verbum, 1965
Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy
Spirit. - DV #9
Since, therefore, all that the...sacred writers affirm should be regarded as affirmed by the Holy
Spirit, we must acknowledge that the books of Scripture, firmly, faithfully, and without error, teach that truth
which God, for the sake of our salvation, wished to see confided to the sacred Scriptures. Thus 'all Scripture is
inspired by God, and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness [2 Tim
3:16] - DV #11

Tips for Reading the Bible

Scott Hahn tape set, Salvation History , from St. Joseph Communications
Jeff Cavins, Bible Timeline
Jeff Cavins/Scott Hahn tape or video set, Our Father's Plan .
Scott Hahn tape set, Finding Christ in the Old Testament , from St. Joseph Communications
When first reading a book of Scripture, try to read several chapters at a time to get the big picture ,
and then, after finishing the book, go back and study the chapters one at a time.
At the very front of the book, Genesis 2:24, we see the Sacrament of Matrimony: ...and they become
one flesh. At the end of the book, Revelation, chapters 19 and 21, we read of the wedding feast of the Lamb.
The Bible, beginning and end and all in between is about marriage of the Lamb to His Bride, the Church to us.
Read the Bible as a letter from your Divine Spouse. Pray to Him for guidance.

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom He loved standing near, He said to His mother, Woman,
behold, your son! Then He said to the disciple, Behold, your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her
into his own home.
- John 19:26-27
Called in the Gospels the mother of Jesus , Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and
even before the birth of her son, as the mother of my Lord . In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by
the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father's eternal Son,
the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly Mother of God
(Theotokos).

Once Saved, Always Saved?

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know
that if you yield yourself to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of whom you obey, either of sin, which
leads to death or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

I. The Protestant View
A. Protestant Beliefs.
~Accept Jesus Christ into your hearts
~The sinner's prayer
~Only need to believe in Jesus (John 3:16)
~One way ticket to heaven; nothing can derail the train
~ Absolute assurance
~Since works do not gain our salvation, works cannot contribute to our losing our salvation.
~We are hid with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3)
~ No condemnation for those in Christ
(Romans 8:1-2)
B. One Protestant writes:
However, it is not merely from the Levitical laws that we were discharged, but also from the
moral ones. God only has one law. Does that mean we can sin freely? No, for God hates sin, and if we love
God, we will live according to His commandments. However, it does mean that no sin will be held against us
once we receive Christ, for upon receiving Christ we are discharged from the very law against which our sins
would have been reckoned.

II. Showing the Protestant Doctrine to be False, from Scripture

A. Absolute assurance NO!
Catholics say:
~ Romans 8:1-2
does not say absolute assurance
~ Romans 6:15-16
says that sin leads to death
B. Discharges from the moral law...NO!
Catholics say:
~ Matthew 5:27-30
Jesus does not discharge us from the moral law! There is consequence for sinning!
~ Matthew 18:8-9
C. Others
~ Matthew 13:40-42; Matthew 18:23-35 & Matthew 6:14-15 (we must forgive others); Romans
11:17-23; John 15:1-11; Galatians 5:1; Hebrews 6:4-8; James 5:19
NOTES:__________________________________________

III. Other Protestant Arguments
A. Sola Fide...NO!
~ Once saved, always saved stems from this doctrine. Since sola fide (faith alone) can be
shown to be false, the basis for once saved, always saved crumbles.
B. Once saved, you cannot sin...NO!
~ Romans 7:15
For I do not do what I want, but I do the very things I hate.

III. Three Possibilities Regarding Christianity
A. Jesus established more than one church
B. Jesus established an invisible, abstract, spiritual church in which all believers, regardless of
denomination, are members. In this church, either:
(1) Doctrine does not matter, or
(2) Conflicting and contradictory doctrines are acceptable.

C. Jesus established one Church, which is visible and in which doctrine matters and does not conflict.
This church contains the fullness of truth as revealed by God; all others have partial truth, at best.

If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. So, faith, hope, love abide, these
three; but the greatest of these is love.
- 1 Corinthians 13:2 & 13
We are therefore said to be justified by faith, because faith is the beginning of human salvation, the foundation
and root of all justification, without which it is impossible to please God we are therefore said to be justified

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of [His] disciples that are not written in this book. But these
are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you
may have life in His name.
- John 20:30-31
Faith is a personal act - the free response of the human person to the initiative of God who reveals himself.
But faith is not an isolated act. No one can believe alone, just as no one can live alone. You have not given
yourself faith as you have not given yourself life. The believer has received faith from others and should hand
it on to others. Our love for Jesus and for our neighbor impels us to speak to others about our faith. Each
believer is thus a link in the great chain of believers. I cannot believe without being carried by the faith of
others, and by faith I help support others in the faith.

Did the Catholic Church Burn Bibles?
Yes! Bibles that were published with errors were burned by Catholics and Protestants alike.
Murderer's Bible Mark 7:27
Did the Catholic Church Chain Bibles?
Yes! In earlier centuries each Bible was copied by hand and therefore cost large sums of money.
Bibles were chained so that they would not be stolen from the Church and would therefore, be available for
ALL to read,
not just the rich.

General Rules for Scriptural Debates
1. Not all Christian Beliefs are found directly in Scripture.
Example: Trinity is not in Scripture
2. The Bible is NOT the sole rule of Faith.
Example: 1 Timothy 3:15
As a Catholic, your first response when someone reads a Scripture verse should be, Amen. I believe that
100%. But I don't necessarily agree with your interpretation of that passage.
When you are given a Scripture verse that proves the Catholic Church is wrong, do two things:
1) Read the verse VERY carefully.
2) Put it into context.
Remember: The Bible is a Catholic book. There is not a single article of the Catholic faith that is opposed to
anything in the Bible!

Catholic Teaching
A. Catechism of the Catholic Church #946-962
1. The Communion of Saints is the Church; #946
2. All members of the one body - Christ; #947
3. All Christians are connected through the Body of Christ; #953, 2 Cor 2:5, and 2 Cor 1:5
B. Communion of Saints-Underlying Principles
1. Every Christian is a member of the Body of Christ; Rom 12:4-5, 1 Cor 12:12-13
a. Through baptism; Col 2:12; Rom 6:4,Gal 3:27
2. Physical death does not separate us from the Body of Christ; Rom 8:38-39
3. There is only one Body of Christ, in Heaven and on Earth; Eph 2:15-16; Eph 4:4
4. The Church is the Body of Christ; Eph 1:22-23, Col 1:18,24
C. Just as we can pray for one another, we can suffer for one another; Col 1:24

II. Objections to Catholic Teaching
A. Contrary to Deut 18:10-12, calling up the dead
1. Misinterpretation of Scripture; this is about the occult
2. Misunderstanding of Catholic practice and teaching; Catholics do not use mediums, spiritists, etc. to
call up the dead
3. Saints in Heaven are alive ; Mt 22:31-32 God is the God of the Living!
4. Mt 17:1-4, Elijah and Moses appear to Jesus and 3 disciples
B. Terminology: Prayer to Mary or Prayer to the Saints is not worshipping them; it is asking or requesting their prayer and intercession. E.g., I pray thee, brothers and sisters, pray for me.
C. Saints in Heaven can't hear us or see us; therefore, we cannot pray to them
1. Saints in Heaven do not have the same limitations that we have on Earth: Rev 21:21;1 Cor 13:12; 1
Cor 15:49; 2 Ptr 1:4; 1 Cor 2:9
NOTES:__________________________________________
________________________________________________
________________________________________________
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
________________________________________________
2. God reveals certain knowledge to angels and saints in Heaven; 1 Cor 2:10, Rev 6:9-10, 1 Sam
28:8-19, Lk 16:19-31
3. Angels and saints, to some extent, know what's in a person's heart and mind; Luke 15:7-10, Mt
22:29-30, Heb 12:1
D. Prayer to Mary and the Saints is attributing God-like power to them
1. Example of left hand sticking right hand with needle; all impulses 1st go through the brain
2. All prayer 1st goes through Christ; everything is through Him, with Him, and in Him; Mary and the
Saints have no power of their own
Summary:
1) Saints in Heaven are alive, not dead;
2) Saints and angels in Heaven have some knowledge of events, present and future, on Earth; and
some knowledge of interior dispositions;
3) This knowledge is not of their own power, it is only through Jesus Christ.

II. Objections (cont'd)
E. Why waste your time praying to the Saints when you can go straight to Jesus?
1. Why waste your time asking me for prayer when you can go straight to Jesus?
2. Misunderstanding-you cannot go to the Saints with out 1st going to Jesus (Head of the
Body)
3. Prayer of a righteous man; James 5:16, 1 Ptr 3:12, Heb 12:22-23, Job 42:7-10, Ex 17:8-13
4. If there are no righteous ones on earth (Rom 3:10),and therefore, according to Protestant
argument, Mary was not sinless, who was James talking about in 5:16?
5. Saints in Heaven love us and want to pray for us; Love never ends 1 Cor 13:8

F. Biggest objection to Catholic teaching - 1 Tim 2:5; Jesus' role as sole mediator between God and
man
1. Catholics agree that Jesus is the sole mediator between God and man . Jesus is the only
one who is true God and true man; only by Jesus' blood are we saved; but, as members of Jesus' Body, we
can share in His role as mediator as He allows us to
2. Moses, Abraham, Job are examples of mediation and intercession between God and man;
praying for one another here on earth is an example of mediating and interceding between God and man
3. 1 Tim 2:5 is being misinterpreted
4. Only one foundation, Jesus: 1 Cor 3:11. Yet, other foundations: Eph 2:19-20, Rev 21:14
5. Only one Lord, Jesus: Eph 4:4-5 Yet, other lords: Rev 19:16, 1 Ptr 3:6
6. Only one judge, Jesus: James 4:12, 2 Tim 4:1. Yet, other judges: 1 Cor 6:2, Lk 22:28-30
7. Only one Father, God: Mt 23:9 Yet, other fathers: Acts 7:2, Acts 22:1, 1 Cor 4:15
NOTES:__________________________________________
________________________________________________
________________________________________________
________________________________________________
________________________________________________
II. Objections (cont'd)
8. Only one teacher, Jesus: Mt 23:6-8 (NKJV). Yet, other teachers: Acts 13:1, 1 Cor 12:28
9. More examples of intercessors/mediators: Mt 18:10, Rev 5:8, Rev 8:3-4
Summary: Scripture tells us that there is only one Foundation, only Lord, only one Judge, only one Father,
only one Teacher, just as it tells us there is one Mediator; yet, Scripture also shows us that there is more than
one judge,
more than one foundation, more than one lord, more than one judge, more than one father,
more than one teacher. Does scripture contradict itself? No! Jesus is the head of the Body. Jesus grants
different members
of the Body the graces to share in His role as
foundation, as lord, as judge, as
father, as teacher, and yes, as mediator. The members of the Body are allowed...through, with, and in Jesus
Christ...to share in the grace and glory of the Head, Jesus Christ. And, as we have seen, Scripture is full of
examples of people sharing in the mediation of Christ.
