It is a movement that sought to create the reality of the unconscious. In this art, the artists subjective expression of inner experiences was emphasized; an inner feeling was expressed through a distorted rendition of reality. It is a literature that arose in opposition to bourgeois society and its embrace of materialism and science. It stressed personal individualistic perspective rather than collective communal values.
