Too much on a single occasion can lead to alcohol poisoning which could put you in a coma or even kill you. . The short-term effects of alcohol can last for a day or two, depending on how much you drank (hangover). . Long-term effects include damage to body that can take years to develop and this leads to a wide range of serious health problems, like cancers that you may not realise are linked.

Official Guidelines
For young people it is recommended that you dont drink at all if under 15, as this can be especially harmful. The best advice is not to drink alcohol until youre 18. If you do choose to drink before then, remember to make sure youre with a responsible adult who will stop you doing anything that could be dangerous; . Never drink more than once a week and on that one day young men are advised not to drink more than 3-4 units, and young women not to drink more than 2-3 units. . For adults it is recommended men shouldnt regularly drink more than 3-4 units a day and women shouldnt regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day (regularly is drinking at this sort of level every day or most days of the week). After a night of heavy drinking, you shouldnt drink for 48 hours to allow the body to recover.

These new substances are not yet controlled because there is not enough research about them yet to ban. However, more and more legal highs are being researched to see what the dangers are and if they should be made illegal.

Legal highs cannot be sold for human consumption so they are often sold as bath salts or plant food to get round the law. Just the fact that a substance is sold as legal to possess, doesnt mean that its safe - you cant really be sure whats in a legal high that youve bought, or been given, or what effect its likely to have.

Stimulants Class A
PMA is similar to MDMA (ecstasy). It can make users feel alert, alive and full of energy. Its similarity means that PMA is actually sometimes sold as ecstasy. It is also known as paramethoxymethyamphetamine, or para-methoxymethyamphetamine. However, PMA is much stronger, and like MDMA, can cause a fatal rise in body temperature. The effects of PMA also take longer than MDMA to begin to be felt so some users have overdosed by mistakenly taking pill after pill thinking nothing is happening, which can also be fatal.

RISKS PMA
. As little as a quarter of a tablet (60mg) is enough to significantly increase blood pressure, body temperature and pulse rates. . Anyone with a heart condition, blood pressure problems, epilepsy or asthma can have a very dangerous reaction. . Anyone using too much can get paranoid and depressed. . PMA and PMMA are often designed to look like ecstasy (pictured here). The difference is that it is much easier to overdose on PMA and PMMA. Teens have taken the drug thinking it was ecstasy with deadly results.

Salvia
. There is some concern that salvia could trigger psychotic episodes particularly in young people and people with previous history of, or a family history of, mental health problems. . Throat and lung irritation, headaches and mild irritability have been reported after using salvia. . Injuring yourself when under the influence of salvia.

Salvia
Hallucinogenic NA (not for human consumption)

17

Tabacoo
Stimulants Legal
Tobacco is found in cigarettes you smoke. It comes from the leaves of the tobacco plant and contains a lot of chemicals.

Effects
Regular smokers believe that smoking tobacco helps them to relax, to handle stress and to feel less hungry. However, tobacco smoke (tar) contains over 4,000 chemicals and many have effects on various parts of the human body, including the brain, lungs, heart and mouth. Smoking Shisha can be more dangerous than smoking a cigarettes, with users at increased risk of picking up diseases from sharing pipes.

18

Tranquillisers
Depressant Class C
There are two types of tranquillisers major (which are non-addictive antipsychotics) and minor (which are relaxants that are addictive and liable to misuse). Here were just talking about the minor tranquillisers. These tranquillisers can induce periods of calmness, relaxation and sleep and are used to treat anxiety and insomnia. They are prescription only medicines that can normally only be prescribed following a consultation with a doctor. There are many different types of minor tranquillisers, but the most common are the group of drugs called benzodiazepines. These include Rohypnol, Valium (also called diazepam), temazepam and phenazepam (although this latter drug is sometimes found in street drugs, it is not prescribed by doctors in the UK).

RISKS
. Some have been shown to cause short-term memory loss and big doses can make a user forgetful and make them overly sleepy. . They can be highly addictive, and so are mainly recommended only for short-term use in medicine. . People who are addicted can experience nasty withdrawal symptoms - decreased concentration, tremors, nausea, vomiting, headaches, anxiety, panic attacks and depression. . Very uncomfortable bodily sensations can also develop; and fits can occur, which in severe cases can be fatal. . Sudden withdrawal after big doses or from some specific drugs can cause panic attacks and fits. . Some people crush or melt tranquillisers, so that they can be injected. This is extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal. . The chalk in the tablets is a major cause of collapsed veins which can lead to infection and abscess. . Injecting gel capsules can also be fatal when the gel solidifies inside the blood vessels. . There are concerns that tranquillisers have been used in sex crimes, where a victims drink is spiked with a tranquilliser, for example Rohypnol, making them very drowsy or knocking them out so theyre either unaware of or unable to prevent a sexual assault.

Effects
Tranquillisers are prescribed to treat anxiety and insomnia. Because of concerns about their addictiveness, they are mainly recommended only to be used in such cases for short-term use and when the problems are severe. They are also sometimes used to control epileptic fits

2C-B
Hallucinogenic Class A
Drugs of the 2C family, such as 2CB, 2CT-7, 2CI and 2CE, have both psychedelic/hallucinogenic and stimulant effects. Their effects are a cross between ecstasy and LSD. As hallucinogens or psychedelics they can make you see objects and reality in a distorted way and may cause hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that arent there). As stimulants they can make you feel awake and alert and may cause changes in your emotions.

RISKS
2C drugs are not that common in Britain but we do know some of the possible risks: . may cause headaches, nausea and vomiting, panic attacks and even an acute psychosis has been reported. . At high doses, more serious confused, agitated or delirious states. . There is a risk of over-stimulating the heart and circulation. . Its not yet known if they cause any long term damage but there have been numerous hospitalisations associated with use of these types of drugs, and a case reported of associated neurological damage and one case of a fatal overdose.

Effects
The 2C drugs have both psychedelic, hallucinogenic and stimulant effects, somewhere between ecstasy and LSD, these include: . An energy buzz with possible feelings of alertness, of being alive and of being in tune with surroundings like ecstasy, particularly when taken at lower doses. Users can feel really aware of colours, sounds and smells or distorted senses. . The body feels hypersensitive and you may become sexually aroused. . The effects have been reported usually to last from two to four hours but sometimes for some hours longer. . The more you take, the more intense and uncontrollable the experience will be.
