About the Enrichment Activities
After listening to the stories, your child will be ready and eager to use his or her new Spanish vocabulary. In general, try to use Spanish words whenever possible throughout the day. Children learn best through repetition. The more often a child says the Spanish words, the more comfortable he or she will be in speaking the language. On the following pages youll find a few practical suggestions for using the Spanish from these stories in your daily routine. These are simple things that you can do with materials already around the house. Your child will be proud to use the Spanish he or she has learned throughout the day. Have fun with these activities!

Family and Friends Encourage your child to draw or cut out pictures from a magazine to make a book of your family and friends. Add new pages when your child makes new friends, or when new relatives are born or welcomed into the family. Are you someones hermano (brother)? Who is your madre (mother), your abuela (grandmother)? What color are her ojos (eyes)? Is her cabello (hair) negro (black), or gris (grey), or is it marrn (brown)?

Family Photos Look at a recent family photograph. Ask your child, where is el padre (father)? la madre (mother)? Point to family members in the photo while saying who they are in Spanish. Talk about how everyone looks, for example, ask, Is your papi alto (tall)? or Are you pequeo (little)? What color is sisters camesa (shirt)?

Your Family Tree Help your child to draw a simple family tree. Talk about aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Who looks alike? Who looks different? Can un primo (a cousin) be the same as un amigo (a friend)?

A Pretend Family Have your child use dolls or stuffed animals to make a pretend family. Have her introduce them to you and to others throughout the day.

Getting Dressed Ask your child to identify the colors of different articles of clothing while getting dressed. After this lesson, they will have learned the words azul, blanca, marron, negro, and gris (blue, white, brown, black, and grey).

Huevos Rancheros Make this easy breakfast dish with your child: Scramble some eggs as you usually would. Warm up a couple of small flour or corn tortillas and spread them lightly with butter or margarine. On top of each tortilla put a scoop of scrambled eggs, a spoonful of your favorite jarred salsa and a sprinkling of cheese. Roll it up and enjoy! You can also add sour cream, cooked pinto beans, chopped olives or a few sprigs of cilantro for a real breakfast adventure!

Family Meals Plan to have a Spanish breakfast one morning. Serve jugo de naranja (orange juice), huevos y salsa (eggs and salsa), and las tostadas con mantequilla y la mermelada (buttered toast with jam).

Picture Book Draw or cut out pictures from a magazine or newspaper of some of the new words your child is learning in this story. Put them together to make a book with pictures your child can point to. Is someone drinking milk from el vaso (a glass), or eating with los tenedores (forks)?

Grocery Store Make a short shopping list with words in Spanish or pictures for your child to use to help you in the grocery store. Identify items using your new Spanish vocabulary. Look for food labels in Spanish and point them out to your child. Where are los huevos (the eggs)? Do we need more salsa (salsa)? Is there mermelada (jam) in the refrigerator?

Breakfast at the Diner Use toys and plastic placeware to help your child set up a pretend restaurant. Have a seat and place your order for las tostadas con mantequilla (toast with butter) and some t (tea). Reverse roles and pretend to serve breakfast to your child. Would you like some huevos (eggs)?

Hot & Cold In this story, your child learned some words for cold and hot. Talk about the things in your kitchen that are fro or fra (cold) or caliente or calientes (hot). Make two sections on the front of your refrigerator or divide a bulletin board into halves. Tape or tack up pictures of things that are hot on one side and of things that are cold on the other. From the story, we know that la leche (milk) is fra (cold) and el jugo de naranja (orange juice) is fro. T (tea) is caliente (hot), and tortillas are muy calientes (very hot). What else can you find to add to each side?

Family Connections Everyone knows that Diego is Doras primo (cousin), but theres a surprise in the Breakfast adventure Doras Mami and Papi are Diegos ta (Aunt) and to (Uncle)! Does your child know any Uncles or Aunts? What do they like to eat for breakfast?
