Student Instructions
When submitting your assignment it is important that you follow the guidelines provided and include all required support documents. To assist you even further when writing your assignment, below we have detailed the process that should be taken:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Carefully read the assignment brief & instructions. Throughout the writing of your assignment, follow the 5 part supervision tracking sheet (ASTS00) with your tutor listing topics covered at each meeting and signing as appropriate. On completion of your assignment, check word count, spelling and grammar and review with reference to plagiarism. Complete the submission form(s) (AMG00), being sure to add the word count for each section. If applicable, have your work placement provider fill in the employer report (ARE00). The OTHM assignment supervision tracking sheet should then be finalised. Be sure to add student, tutor and delivery centre details as instructed. Read the Declaration of Authenticity on the final page of the supervision tracking sheet and sign and date as appropriate. Ensure all items on the checklist have been included and scanned as an electronic copy. Finally, send all the required documents along with your assignment as an email attachment(s) to assignments@othm.org.uk.
OTHM Administration
For reference it might be useful for you to understand what happens to your assignment when it is submitted to OTHM. The process is outlined below:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. OTHM make a record of receiving your assignment and will email you to confirm it has been received. The support documents are checked to see if anything is missing. If so, the student will be contacted. The assignment is uploaded to Turnitin OriginalityCheck. The assignment is then accessed by an external marker. If it is found to contain an unacceptable level of plagiarism, the marker will inform us and it will be returned to you for resubmission. Work that is accepted is then marked online. Once the assignments have been marked, the standard of marking is reviewed at the OTHM Moderation Committee meeting. Any issues with assignments are then brought up at the OTHM Exam Board meeting. Once all issues are resolved, results are released. Transcripts and certificates are then distributed to students/centres.
If you require any further clarification or assistance on how to submitting your assignment, please contact the OTHM office on 020 8773 7677 or email assignments@othm.org.uk.

Choosing a Topic / Organisation The assignment has been designed to allow you to choose an organisation within the tourism and hospitality industry and not be restricted to any one specific area. You may be interested in travel, tourism and/or hospitality, so the range of organisations can vary from tourism boards, tour operators, travel agents, transport (including air, sea, road and rail) to hoteliers, restaurateurs, conference centres, event management organisations or other businesses (large or small) related to tourism and hospitality.
Some Issues to Consider HRM is a vital function in all organisations, whether SMEs, often specialising in a particular niche, or national, international or even global businesses. OTHM is directing the student to use examples and case studies particular to tourism and hospitality. You may currently be in employment or work placement with a travel agent, tour operator, carrier, accommodation provider, F&B or conference & event management department/organisation. The list is not complete but gives you an indication that there are numerous contact points with customers/clients and stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality supply chain which should assist you in gathering appropriate information to complete your assignment. Alternatively you may be in full-time education and therefore undertaking research into relevant campaigns of your chosen organisation. Many parts of the industry operate on a 24/7/365 basis, with long shift patterns and the need for numerous team members, team leaders, supervisors and managers to maintain a professional level of service. Heavy competition in a number of markets (both domestic and international) has meant that organisations need to focus on SERVQUAL which is linked to the recruitment, retention, quality, motivation and training of team members. Poor HRM often leads to high labour turnover, which is not only costly and time-consuming, but also has a negative impact on SERVQUAL, customer loyalty and the profitability of the business.
