Andrew Huang 11/26/12 The Price of Progress: Article 36 Main Idea: This article discusses the downsides that

come with progress, particularly the downsides that accompany an increase in the quality of life. It looks into with specific detail on the negatives that tribal people experience due to the government looking on increasing standards of life, even at the expense of the tribal peoples. Fact 1: Teeth is a good indicator of standard of livings. Strangely enough, the savages/ tribal peoples have excellent teeth, while civilized developed countries have teeth that decay and are plagued with periodontal diseases. Anthropologist Price did a study in which he found that isolated tribes whom still ate traditional foods had nearly perfect teeth with no signs of decay. In tribes with newly adopted modern diets, abnormalities steadily increased. Fact 2: Malnutrition is another downside that tribal people have to experience for others to have a higher standard of life. As the tribal populations are forced into growing cash crops, they have less plantation space for traditional foods. As the cash crops replace traditional crops, the nutrition of crops grown are also much lower. And a major problem of malnutrition is that it leads to undersized brain development and brain damage. Fact 3: Ecocide is another downside the tribes have to face in the pursuit of a higher standard of living for the rest of the population. Progress brings also stress to the ecosystem, as the modern methods of agriculture, the technology, consumption all tax the land. The land which once had a perfect balance between population and natural resources finds that the new system is unbalanced. There are already resource depletion, erosion along with plant and animal extinctions. Textbook Connection: PP219 Chp.11 Industrial Degradation is the term for how the widespread effect of industrialization has seen the destruction of indigenous economies, ecologies, and populations. Bias: There is no bias in this article. The writer looks at both sides of the equation, and finds both the flaws and positives with both parties. While he notes the flaws that are happening to the tribal peoples, he recognizes the higher standard of living that the masses get to enjoy, and that some things are noble sacrifices to be made. New Term: Ecocide, the destruction and death of the ecosystem due to the imbalance between population and natural resources. As the peoples technology and consumption tax the land, the land cannot support all the people and begin to die.
