Finally, Ron admitted to him self that he was lost. He turned arround and started back.

After several minutes, he still couldnt see the edge of the trees. Then he realized he could no longer hear to other hikes voices. He tried walking in another direction, shouting their names. Still no voices. He was lost. Once he realized that he was completely lost, Ron sat down to think about wht he should do. It was beginning to get dark, and he didnt want to wander around the forest at night, getting farther away from the camp. He decided he should stay where he was, at least until the next morning. He was hungry, but there was only a small piece of candy in his pocket. He ate it. Then he made a bad of leaves beside a log and lay down to try to sleep. His coat wasnt very warm, and the cold kept him awake for a long time. He covered himself with more leaves and finally fell asleep. The next morning Ron woke up early. He tried shouting for the other again, but there was no answer. Then he started walking. After some times, he sat down to think again. If he could biuld a fire, someone might see the smoke and find him. But how could he build a fire without matches or evev a knive? He tried to find sticks and small pieces of wood, but they were all wet. When he tried rubbing them to start a fire, they broke into many smaller pieces. By Saturday afternoon, Ron was very hungry. He began walking. Soon he found a small stream. He stopped to take a drink. Suddenly he starred to the stream, trying to remember something he had read about finding your way out of the forest. Something about following a stream. That was it! You were supposed to follow a dirrection it was flowing, and it would lead to the road, town or city. Ron began to follow the water downstream. It was almost noon on Saturdy when Rons friends reached the ranger station. They told the rangers about Ron, and the rangers immediately organized a search party. By three oclock of Saturday afternoon, the first patrol had began looking for Ron. Each patrol carried compasses, maps, medicines, and a radio. Meanwhile the state police sent some men in a traffic helicopter to search from above the tree-tops. Rons parents arrived to the search headquarters at three-thirty along with another group of uniformed state police. The rangers wanted to find Ron before nightfall. He had already spent one night out in the rough mountains, and Saturday nights weather prediction was for freezing temperatures and possible rain. It began to get dark. At about midnight, after the last patrol had returned to the

search headquarters, another truct arrived. It was carrying four state police officers and a pack of hunting dogs. Since the dog could pick up Rons trail using their sense of smell, they didnt need to wait for daylight. The state police decided to start right away. After following the stream for a long time, Ron noticed that it was beginning to get dark again. He would have to spend another night out in the forest. It seemed to be colder too. He decided he sould build himself a shelter for the night. He found a very large log near the stream. Then he laid one end of a smaller log on the top of it and the other end on the ground. This left a small space between the small log and the ground just enough room for Ron to crawl under. He continued laying logs this way until he had a shelter long enough for him to lie under. Then he put some leaves on the top of it and placed more logs, sticks, and leaves at one end to keep out any wind. After taking a drink from the stream, he climbed inside his shelter and trien to fall asleep. When Ron woke up, it was raining. He stayed inside his shelter, trying to stay as dry as possible. Suddenly he heard a noise. It sounded very far away. He couldnt tell what it was first, but it seemed ti be coming closer. It sounded like barking bods. Ron jumped up and began to shout as loud as he could. Soon he saw the police and dogs coming down the stream. When they returned savely to the search headquarters, the police told Rons parents : Your son is a very smart young man. He would have found his own way out by this afternoon. He didnt need our help at all!! just the same, Ron was very glad they found him when they did. ----oOo----

Sabtu sore, Ron merasa sangat lapar. Ia mencoba berjalan. Tak lama ia menemukan sungai kecil. Ia berhenti untuk minum. Tiba-tiba ia temenung, mencoba mengingat sesuatu yang pernah ia baca tentang bagaimana keluar dari hutan jika tersesat. Mengikuti aliran sungai. Pukul tiga sore, patroli pertama memulai pencarian.
