Challenge
A leading manufacturer of computer
and electronic heat sinks required
wire inserts for a new thin plate heat
sink design. Traditional tanged insert
designs did not meet the thin
envelope dimensions of the metal
substrate due to the potential for
surface damage during the tang
break-off step.

Solutions
Emhart proposed the use of a Heli-Coil
Tangless insert which eliminated the
additional material thickness required
for proper tang break-off. Eliminating
the tang break-off requirement allowed
the customer to utilize the thin material
required for the application with no
concern of dimpling or break-out of
the surface. The use of Tangless
inserts also eliminated the concern of
any stray tangs remaining in the
system as foreign debris.
