Indian Standard
SPECIFICATION FOR BASIC RACK AND MODULES OF STRAIGHT BEVEL GEARS FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING AND HEAVY ENGINEERING
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 31 March 1969, after the draft finalized by the Gears Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council. 0.2 This standard covers the basic rack and the series of modules for straight bevel gears suitable for general and heavy engineering purposes. Since the Government of India has decided to follow only the metric system, the diametral pitch values have been given in Appendix A for the interim period of changeover. 0.3 This standard has been completely based on ISO/R 677-1968 Basic rack of straight bevel gears for general engineering and heavy engineering and ISO!R 678-1968 Modules and diametral pitches of straight bevel gears for genera1 engineering and heavy engineering , issued by the International Organization for Standardization. 0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the-result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard specifies the dimensions of basic rack and recommended series of modules for straight bevel gears for general engineering and heavy engineering. 2. TERMINOLOGY 2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the terms and definitions given in IS : 2458-1965-j and the following shall apply.
*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( rerDnf

IS : 5037 - 1969 2.2 Basic Rack -The rack profiie of which corresponds to a section of the tooth surface of a crown gear of infinitely large diameter on a plane at right angles to the tooth surfaces. This profile is used as the basis of a system of bevel gears having straight teeth. 2.3 Module - The quotient of the pitch by the number pi ( or the quotient of the reference diameter by the number of teeth ). 3. PROFILE OF THE BASIC RACK

3.1 Figure 1 represents the profile of the basic rack for straight bevel gears with pressure angle 20 and of module 1 to 50 for general and heavy engineering.

Lr=0*3MAX REFERENCE LINE FOR UNIT MODULE

FIG. 1 BASIC RACK TOOTH PROFILE

3.1.1 The profile of the standard basic rack refers to straight bevel gears with involute teeth. 3.1.2 The tips of the teeth are at a distance of one module from the reference line and the thickness of the tooth, measured on the reference line is equal to the width of the space. 3.1.3 The value of the radius at the root of the tooth normally shall not exceed 0.3 m, keeping in mind that this radius shall be as large as possible. In exceptional cases where the conditions of meshing permit, the value may be exceeded up to a maximum of O-35 m.
NOTE -

Pressure angle of 15 may also be adopted in special cam.

3.1.4

In case

of a profile with relief, the relief shall be provided to the 3

tips of the teeth.

IS : 5937 - 1969

3.1.5 The tooth of a bevel gear ( corresponding to the basic rack ) is generated by a tooth of an imaginary crown gear with straight flanks and is formed, in practice by the traces described by the cutting edges of a tool or of two tools, the radius of the imaginary crown gear is equal to the cone distance of the bevel gear to be cut. The profile of the cut tooth is a portion of octoid. The relation between the basic rack and the cutting tools is shown in Fig. 2 for information.

4. MODULES 4.1 The recommended series of modules values correspond to modules at maximum gears. are given in Table 1. reference circle diameters These of the

4.2 As far as possible, the modules shall be of the values given under co1 1 of Table 1. The modules given within brackets under co1 3 should be avoided as far as possible. 4.3 For modules below I and above 50, the profile of basic rack as indicated in Fig. 1 shall be used.
