Adams Residence A Summer Home: All Year Long...

By Pamela Cole of Dwell Design | Photos by Jaryd Neibauer

From their fabulous front courtyard to their colorful backyard cabana, the Adams have made outdoor living a year-round possibility in their Cordova home. After all, that was the intent! Originally from Green Bay Wisconsin, homeowners Kevin and Tami Adams have lived all over the US but settled here almost six years ago with their two boys: Austin (a Freshman at Basha High School) and Alec (a 5th grader at Patterson Elementary). With long winters behind them, they were ready to bring the indoors out and enjoy the climate Arizona is known for. "We love being outside and we wanted a space that had the comforts of inside and the activities of the outside," agreed Kevin and Tami. Their courtyard is the perfect place to host a casual brunch or front yard cocktails. With three separate seating areas, Tami's goal was to not only finish the space that guests walked through on their way to the front door but also provide functionality for entertaining. The space went from stark and sparse to comfortable and connected, with the help of Pamela Cole and the Dwell Design team. They utilized outdoor upholstery fabrics, all-weather greenery, and outdoor accessories in a perfect palette of blues, greens, and creams. "Tami really had the vision of what she wanted... We simply translated that into a cohesive design with three distinct seating areas." The backyard is every boys (big and little) dream: sport court, putting green, water slide and grotto, fire pit, and flat screens for sports viewing! Sitting center stage is the cobalt blue pool, sparkling from

the bottom up with an entire pool surface constructed of tiny square glass tiles in all shades of blue. At night the blue glass fire pits light up the rock waterfall and the fog and misters keep the temperatures bearable even on the hottest of summer nights. Tami and Kevin hosted housewarming party last summer to welcome in the new backyard... "We used every inch of the yard, every chair and chaise, and guests even enjoyed Hawaiian dancers at the end of the evening! But entertaining is just part of what our yard is all about." Even in the winter the oversized covered outdoor living space keeps warm with a large cantera fireplace and cozy wrought

iron seating sized for lounging. A square table set for eight is perfect for fall and spring family dinners al fresco and the entire patio is unified with colorful fabrics, accessories, and large area rugs. "It was so refreshing to design a space with bright stripes and fresh color and it truly connected with the colors in the pool and the landscaping," recalls the Dwell Design team. Though the family enjoys traveling together during breaks throughout the year, their own backyard could seem like a vacation spot all its own...

Who doesnt like salads, but the pain of cutting everything up that goes into it used to stop me from making this healthy meal! Now with this recipe, you can make as many salads as you want and always have them on hand. Now that its summer here in AZ, many want a meal that is fast and refreshing. You wont believe how easy this is, and they last 1-2 weeks! I have eaten one of these salads 12 days after making it, and the lettuce had just started to wilt.
Ingredients:

The most important part of the layering is making sure the dressing and the salad greens do not touch. Place all ingredients into a mason jar. How big you would like the salads to be will determine the size jar you use. I have always used the quart size containers, and it makes a salad that fills a dinner plate generously. Store in fridge for 1-2 weeks.

NeighborhoodNews

The Brady Bunch was one of the first famous blended families. Mike had three boys of his ownGreg, Peter, and Bobbyand Carol had three girlsMarsha, Jan, and Cindy. Mike and Carol married and the 6 children came together to make one, big, new family: a blended family. A blended family is a step-family. It is a family that includes children from a previous relationship of one or both spouses. Estate planning for a blended family can be a tricky balancing act between the interests of the new spouse and family and the interests of the children from a previous relationship. The following are a few examples of unintended outcomes that can happen in a blended family situation. Leave It All To Spouse - This often occurs through what is known as an "I Love You Will." In an "I Love You Will" one spouse

leaves everything to the other spouse. In some instances this works just fine, but with a blended family it may cause problems. In the Brady Bunch example, if Mike passes away and leaves everything to Carol in his Will, Carol can spend this inheritance any way she wants. This is great for Carol and the girls. Carol can leave this money to anyone she chooses in her own estate plan. In all likelihood, Carol will leave everything to her children; Marsha, Jan, and Cindy. Mike may have thought that Carol would take care of Greg, Peter, and Bobby and provide for them in her estate plan. Even if Carol promised Mike that she would leave money to his boys, Carol is under no legal obligation to do so. Possible Alternatives - Often times with blended families, a trust based estate plan is a common solution. Upon the death of the first spouse a special trust called a Marital Trust is established. This trust can ultimately protect the inheritance of the deceased spouse's children. The Marital Trust has rules and restrictions on how the surviving spouse can access and spend the money. Leave It All To Children - Leaving all of your assets to your children can have several unintended results. First, this could cause your surviving spouse to have insufficient resources to continue to live comfortably. If Mike left everything to his boys, Carol, a stay at home mother, may have a hard time supporting herself and her children. Second, your children may be minors when you die. This means an adult has to manage their inheritance until they reach the legal age of majority, typically 18 years of age. Usually a court must appoint the adult that will manage the money and the court typically chooses the surviving biological parent for this job. This means your ex-spouse or ex-partner may end up controlling all of the assets you have left for your children. Possible Alternatives - A revocable living trust based estate plan can prevent an ex-spouse from gaining control of your child's inheritance. When you create a trust, you decide ahead of time who will be the trustee of the trust after your death. The trustee is the person that manages the assets on behalf of the beneficiaries, in this case the children. Planning with life insurance may also be a way to ensure that your new spouse and your children have sufficient resources available after your passing. Planning Is Key With Blended Families - There are numerous financial and legal strategies available to help blended families achieve their estate planning goals. Knowing that blended families have unique obstacles in the planning process can help one navigate the common mistakes. Experienced legal counsel can help you create an estate plan that will both provide for and protect your new spouse and children.

e have recently volunteered to foster puppies. We provide these babies a stable home environment with all the basic lessons needed to be adopted. We keep these puppies until they have received their puppy shots, have been altered, and they each have an identifying chip inserted for a safe return if they are lost along the way. One of the biggest reasons we foster is to keep the Orphans out of the humane society where their chances of illness and diseases are greater. In many cases our foster homes have multiple dogs, and do it out of pure love, hating to say no to any orphan needing help. Having multiple dogs limits the personal attention. But provides a safe environment of love until a Forever home is found. We are a bit different in that we take on one project at a time. Each pup is introduced to our family dog (Walter), the family cat (Mickey), and our horse (Shiloh). Spending time in this environment really socializes them. In addition, we have a training program each pup goes through. Each are kennel trained, potty trained, learn to sit, shake, lay down, stay, walk on a lease, and leave it (meaning they do not touch something on the floor if dropped). Most recently our daughter has taught one of our Foster pups; Ruby, how to play dead. There is no extra cost for that. Smile.... Our success rate for finding Forever homes, for the pups we have raised is 100%. To date, we have fostered two pups and

we are currently bottle feeding 4, three day old pups as their mother was hit by a car and killed. Taking on bottle feeding pups is the hardest foster to find. Puppies this young need to be fed every three hours! Most families schedules will not allow that commitment. This was a family decision. I consulted my husband and two children and they all were excited about taking a feeding shift. This has been our hardest, but most rewarding adventure so far. Everyone asks, "isn't it hard to say goodbye to your fosters when homes are found". The answer is "YES, yes, yes..." but the knowledge that we helped them find a safe and loving home is so rewarding. Plus, there are others just waiting to be saved. It isn't long until we have the pitter patter of little footsteps

again. Adoption costs are $200, and each home is checked and approved before placement. If anyone is interested in one of the bottle fed pups, feel free to contact me at AZabercrombies@cox.net. If you would like information on other dogs/puppies looking for homes, please contact the rescue at http://www.helpingorphanedhounds.org/ or friend us on Face book at Helping Orphaned Hounds. If you are interested in Fostering, please let us know that too!

Basha High Fundraiser

Fun Night Supporting Basha Bears Wrestling Team!

Residents, Scott and Michele Miller of Cordova, opened up their home to host the Annual Basha High Wrestling Texas Hold-Em Poker Night. It was a fun evening where participants played poker, laughed, and renewed or created friendships. There was a silent auction, door prizes, as well as items raffled off. Because Scott has such a passion for the sport of wrestling, he was more than willing to help this program raise funds. School districts today have so many budget constraints that it is necessary for programs such as these to do fundraisers. The money raised will go towards tournament entry fees, uniforms, any equipment needed, and out of state travel.

VIP Airsoft Arena

Photos by Micah of Sweet Mugz Photography | By Wendy Bates

Seville Living paired up with Ocotillo Living and Foothills Living for an exciting event at VIPAirsoft Arena in Gilbert! VIPAirsoft is Arizonas premier, close-combat, airsoft field and offers 13,000 square feet of fun for all ages. All the guests were welcomed in the lobby. Then the kids and a couple of brave Dads were geared up with masks and chest protectors. Before entering the gaming area, the players were taught the safety rules of airsoft. They learned where not to point their guns and how to load and unload the special ammunition. Muschi Morga of La Vida Medspa said, They went out of their way to ensure the safety of the kids and the adults, as well as providing expert instruction. The kids had a blast! The referees changed up the games each round. The attendees played for a constant two hours, with the exception of enjoying pretzels, pizza, and ICEEs at the concession stand. What an amazing fun-filled place for our children, this summer especially! they said. We all agreed this is a great place for birthday parties too and we would absolutely return again. Muschi commented, Both of my kids, who are 9 & 10 yrs. old loved it. Even after 2 full hours they were sad when it ended, true story! VIPAirsofts owners, Bryan & Kelley Bijonowski, take this family-owned business seriously; even their daughters, Holly and

Emilee, are on board with running sales and marketing. This arena offers fun for all ages and skill levels. VIP hosts events including; training clinics, overnight lock-ins, and summer camps. The birthday party packages start at $20.00 per child and include rental equipment, safety gear, airsoft ammo, and a soft drink. The venue also accommodates private, two hour, team building experiences for any group or company function. If you are looking into fundraising, VIPAirsoft can help with that as well. If you are looking for a fun, family-friendly activity to do this summer, stay out of the heat and visit VIPAirsoft!

A Must See Boutique at San Tan Village

This month Seville Living spent a wonderful evening at Apricot Lane in San Tan Village. In attendance were, Rita Lewis of the Body Kitchen, Kim Clifford of Send Out Cards, Paula Abbey of Abbeys Windows & More, Kathleen Joy, Michele Miller, Jazelyn Lindley and Linda Longman.

We had a great time! Two of our lucky guests won gift cards and Michele Miller was the lucky winner of a 3Strands bracelet. 3Strands is a fashion bracelet created to fund the Agape Training Center in Cambodia, which teaches girls over 16 years old to be empowered in the workplace and allows them to be financially stable after being rescued from human trafficking and sexual slavery. Agape International Missions works hard to rescue and care for the girls in a loving protected environment. Visit Apricot Lane today to learn more and purchase a bracelet of your own. The bracelets are beautifully handmade by the girls and the proceeds are used to bring awareness to this issue and provide the necessary funds to rescue and restore the lives of these young women. Aside from giving so much to local charities and worldwide efforts, Apricot Lane also prides itself with having the trendiest styles! Providing high quality merchandise at reasonable prices. Some of the brands they include are Big Star, MEK , Mavi , Flying Monkey, Vintage Havana , Everly, Collective Concepts, Elan and Ginger G. They also have a ton of great gifts and must-have accessories. We loved the selection of jewelry and unique items Apricot

Book Review
Divergent
Book Review: If you liked Hunger Games then you will love the Divergent Series by Veronica Roth. There are three books within this series, Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant to be released October 2013. It is not as violent, as Hunger Games, but it is similar in looking at how society breaks down when it is compartmentalized. The citizens are broken up into factions where each faction represents a fundamental virtue. The factions are: Candor Those who seek truth and honesty above all else. Abnegation Putting everyone before self, being selfless. Dauntless Bravery and Daring are what is most valued. Amity Being peaceful and nurturing are their credo.

33

Erudite This faction values intelligence and pursues advancement in technology, medicine, and efficiency. The story is from the viewpoint of Beatrice Prior. She has a secret that she must guard with her life while also realizing that her perfect, utopian society is unraveling. This series is a must read and I gather you will have a hard time putting these books down.

Mrs. Jodi Pullen of Lil Einsteins Preschool

rs. Jodi Pullen is one of the remarkable teachers at Lil Einsteins Preschool! She teaches the 4-5 year-old kinder prep classes. Mrs. Jodi has been an early childhood educator for the past 13 years, 6 of those at Lil Einsteins Preschool! We had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Jodi prior to teaching at Lil Einsteins as one of our parents. She was always eager to help and take on any teacher responsibilities or assist in the classroom whenever needed. When an opening arose at Lil Einsteins she was the first person we thought of. Mrs. Jodi is kind, creative and sincere educator. She maintains a positive relationship with parents and fosters a strong schoolto-home connection via newsletters, emails, notes home, and inviting parents into the classroom. Her rapport with children is natural, instinctive, and nurturing. The children blossom as learners in her classroom by getting the individualized attention they need. She has creative and innovative ideas for learning objectives and gets the children excited to learn with such things as homemade waffles for the letter w, creative sock dolls for the letter s, floam for f, moon sand in the sensory table, growing their own plants and much more! Mrs. Jodi creates a welcome and loving climate in her classroom. The children feel a sense of community and love of learning. What more could you want for your childs first experience in education?
