Rabbis Message Women this Past Year It would seem as though much of this year has focused on women's rights. On Yom Kippur I ad- dressed the destructive plan for the government to withdraw funding from Planned Parenthood. This past January I had the honor of delivering the invocation before the Governor's State of the State Address in Albany. My role there in particular was to set the stage for the Governor's Women's Equality Agenda, addressing equal pay for equal work, protection from sexual harass- ment, anti-discrimination laws regarding pregnancy (or potential pregnancy), non-discrimination laws in cases of abuse, and access to medical care, particularly with regard to reproductive health care. It is a ten -part agenda which cannot be parsed. All ten issues must be included in the final legislation. Then, barely more than a week after this address, I had the privilege of speaking on an interfaith panel at the Downstate Medical School regarding reproductive choice. This forum was convened by Medical Students for Choice, and was scheduled to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. We at Union Temple also marked this anniversary with a forum on the salient issues that still exist. This past March, I joined several hundred of our fellow New York Jews at the Town & Village Synagogue for Rosh Chodesh Nisan, in solidarity with Women of the Wall, who were being arrested in increasing numbers month after month this past year, for the "offenses" of wearing talitot and praying in full voice at the Kotel Hama'aravi, the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Early this May, I joined our fellow Reform Jews from New York for Advocacy Day of Reform Jewish Voice of NYS in Albany, to urge our legislators to adopt the Governor's Women's Equality Agenda. Then this past May 10th, I again joined our fellow New York Jews in Madison Square Park for the celebration of Rosh Chodesh Sivan, and in solidarity with Women of the Wall. But this time, it was after the Jerusalem District Court decision declaring that women wearing talitot, reading from the Torah, and praying together at the Kotel did NOT constitute provocation and public disturbance. This time, instead of arresting Women of the Wall, the police arrested the Haredim who were throwing rocks at them. Finally - reason and sanity emerge. Looking back on this extraordinary series of events, only within a six-month period, doesn't it seem odd that we're having to put out all this energy at this time? Shouldn't all this be self-evident by now? The Women's Movement moved into full swing 40 years ago. Why should we still be fighting these fights now, 40 years later? Equal pay for equal work? Access to reproductive health care? Protection against harassment and abuse? . . . Where are we living? Isn't this supposed to be an enlightened society? Isn't Israel supposed to be one too? New York, of course, is one of the more progressive states in our country, or so we would like to think. But the regressive statutes introduced, and in some cases passed, by other states around the country, are turning the clock back on women's reproductive rights in very serious ways. We are moving into the summer months, and naturally, we will slow down a bit. But these issues are still very much with us. And we dare not let down our guard too much, lest we lose ground that we cannot afford to lose. I hope that all of us will remain vigilant so that we can bring our society into line with the progress that we would wish to have made by now. This is for ALL of us. . . . I do wish all of you a restful summer, and hope you will drop in for Shabbat services during July and August, in support of your fellow congregants. -Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman 3
Officers Column Stepping Up One of the gratifying things about being a long- time member of the Temple (has it really been six years since our adult Bnei Mitzvah?) is see- ing new leaders emerge. This year has been es- pecially rewarding. For two years now, the Temple has been blessed with the highly-effective duo of Faye White-Willinger and Lorri Gumanow, co-chairs of the Religious School Committee. Largely due to their efforts, we now have a firmly estab- lished First Friday Family Shabbat and the fun- filled annual kids Purim Festival. Special thanks are due to all our Youth Group parents, who totally stepped up when our Youth Group leader resigned, to keep the program go- ing for their teenagers. Co-chairs Susan Buchs- baum, Beatrice Segal and Rachel Woolley, in particular, were instrumental in pulling off an- other Midnight Run, collecting and distributing food and clothing, with the kids, to the home- less on the streets of Manhattan and serving on the search committees that brought us our new Youth Group Leader, Aaron Levi, and our first Director of Youth and Family Engagement, Mindy Sherry. Bob Newhouser and Pearl Schonfeld recently took the reins of the Adult Education Commit- tee, ably succeeding the indefatigable Peggy Lebenson. Already they have nailed down the rest of this years events, and half of next years schedule. It will be a well-packed year. And what a find we have in Dennies Gajadhar. Dennies has organized crews to make latkes, hamentaschen, cookies and all manner of feasts for special occasions. She was the driving force behind Union Temples first congregational Sec- ond Seder, a wonderful tradition in the making. The work of the Temple couldnt go on without the efforts of all our generous and dedicated volunteers. I thank you all and am delighted to see your numbers increase. -Bea Hanks, President On Advocacy Day for Reform Jewish Voice; Patricka and Howard Katzman, and Rabbis Linda and Stephen Goodman, in the NY State Assembly Chamber. The SHALOM Meditation Circle Find the PEACE WITHIN A one hour ses- sion will be held on Wednesday, June 26th.

Did you feel the earth shake in April? Well, it didwith a court decision in Israel that was felt by Jewish women around the world. On April 11, 2013, Judge Moshe Sobel of the Jerusalem District Court upheld the earlier deci- sion of the magistrate's court that women who wear prayer shawls and pray aloud at the Western Wall should not be arrested. He agreed with the magistrate's ruling that Women of the Wall are neither violating "local cus- tom" nor "causing a public distur- bance." He wrote, according to The Times of Israel, that "the idea of the 'tradition of the site' can be interpreted more broadly, in terms that are 'pluralistic-secular-nationalist' rather than purely Orthodox." Join Sisterhood on Sunday, June 2nd at 10 AM., as we celebrate this ground- breaking decision and view the stirring and powerful documentary PRAYING Sisterhood A Voice to be Heard IN HER OWN VOICE: The Struggle of the Women of the Wall for Religious Freedom in Israel. It's an inspiring way to end what has been a season of terrific programs. To top it off, there will be a sumptuous brunch and a not- to-be missed mystery raffle. Since this will be our last program of the season, we'll also be holding a brief elec- tion. We hope that you would like to submit your name or nominate someone as an officer or member of the board. Not yet a member of Sisterhood? Not to worry. Sisterhood bills will be mailed out this month. Join- ing our warm circle of friendship is as easy as mail- ing in a check for $36. Just think--for only double chai you can perform the mitzvah of bringing hope and help where they are needed by adding your voice, your heart, and your hands to ours as together we reach out to help our temple, our commu- nity, and our world. Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy summer. Enjoy all the pleasures of the long, lazy days of July and Au- gust. Then come back rested, happy, and ready to join us for another great season! -Barbara Brett, Secretary 4 5
Preschool Sipping and Bidding As we near the end of the school year in addition to focusing on year end events in the classrooms, we also had some school-wide fund-raising events. On April 10th
we kicked off our annual on-line silent auction. Bidding went on for two weeks culminating in a won- derful Spring Gala. The Gala was held on Wednesday evening April 24th in the Temple Ballroom. The theme for the evening was old Hollywood. The room was decorated with black table linens, beautiful can- dles, flowers and lots of glitter. Catering for the event was pr ovi ded by Car l o Sor anno of www.mychefdirect.com. Desserts were provided by Sarah Dima, a parent of a Robin student, and owner of 606 R&D. In addition to donating delicious home- made donuts, one of the specialties of her restaurant, she also donated several cheese platters for the party, and two silent auction items, gift certificates to her restaurant. The highlight of the evening was a live auction hosted by a comedian and actor, Steve Rosen. He really got the crowd going with a combination of humor and enthusiasm. We were lucky enough to be able to auction off a two room suite at a luxury hotel in Del Rey Beach Florida; a beautiful pair of earrings; a closet consultation by a stylist to the stars; a cooking tutorial for two offered by Melissa Clark, a parent of a Puffin student; two donations of a long weekend at their beautiful home in the Catskills by Vanessa and Rob Kassabian, parents of a Chickadee student; an Australian Barbeque at the home of Andrew Leitch and Alexandra Tolk, parents of a Chickadee student; tickets to Annie donated by Lara Cohen and Ben Heller, parents of a Sparrows student; and some incredible photographs donated by Anna Williams and Todd Huffman, both parents of Robins students. The evening was a lot of fun. We sipped wine, Prosecco and gimlets as we listened to music from the forties. The silent auction and spring gala with its live auction set a record as the biggest fund-raisers we have ever held. We plan on spending the funds to un- derwrite a new Spanish program as well as to increase the presence of our schools psychological consultant at the school. Our Spanish program will begin in Sep- tember and we will be offering it on Monday and Wednesday afternoons to all full day students. Many thanks to an incredibly dedicated and hard- working committee that included, Nicole Tu, Kebra Caleo, Andrew Leitch, Abby Fleischer, Rachel Ulanet, and Laura Phillips. Special thanks to Krista Bogetich who headed up both the silent auction and the Spring Gala. Her incredible hard-work, dedication, and amaz- ing organizational skills, all came together to make this an amazing event. -Susan Sporer, Preschool Director REMEMBER MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger Donate 3% of your food expenditures to MAZON. MINDY SHERRY, Director of Youth and Family Engagement Our Board of Trustees made the very wise and forward-looking decision to put together a new professional position for Union Temple, beginning this June, the Director of Youth and Family Engagement. In addition to tak- ing the reins of our Religious School, the Director will oversee Aaron and the Youth Group, es- tablish a college connection, and increase connections between our Preschool and Religious School. The search committee consisted of Rabbi Goodman, President Bea Hanks, Preschool Di- rector Susan Sporer, and members of our Religious School and Youth Group committees. We met with a number of highly qualified people, and ultimately offered the position to Mindy Sherry, whom all of us will get to know well in the coming months. Mindy just completed two Masters Degrees at the Rhea Hirsch School of Education of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute Religion in Los Angeles. Her degrees are Master of Arts in Jewish Education, and Master of Arts in Jewish Nonprofit Management. Mindy also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work from Florida International University in Miami, FL. Mindy has had both administrative and educational experience at congregations in San Pedro, Irvine, Los Angeles, and Pacific Palisades, CA, and Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, FL. She also has Youth Group and Jewish Camp leadership experience. Mindy has been to visit our congregation, and has spent a Shabbat with us at services, sat in on our Adult Hevre, visited our Preschool, and attended our Yom Hashoah commemoration. She is very much looking forward to working with us, as we are with her. Mindy will begin her work with us on June 10. Bruchah Habaah, Welcome Mindy!
