Journeys

Self-confidence

Even sky is not the limit for those who believe in themselves. No matter which background you come from, its your determination, will power and hardwork which decides your future. Deepaks story narrates the same. Nobody would have believed him a few years back, if anyone would have predicted that a jovial guy pursuing his Bachelors in Arts (B.A. Yes B.A. no way related to engg.) will join IITB for M.Tech in CS. But it happened!! Wonder how? Keep reading to explore the journey in an interview with Deepak Aggarwal Name: Deepak Aggrawal Deepak Aggarwal GATE Paper: CS AIR: 33 Score: 916 Lives in: Bikaner,Rajasthan Some students dont have enough background Some students dont have enough background and I was one of them. I was previously an Arts student, completed my 12th and Bachelors with Arts. I had no intention of pursuing higher studies and getting a job as we have our own established family business. But who knew what destiny was holding for me. The year I completed My BA, It was for the first time our college introduced M.Sc.(CS). We 6 students decided to take risk and entered into a new world. In the beginning, I felt it difficult to understand even forwhile loops, but soon I got over it. My interest towards computers started increasing and I started feeling comfortable with the new stuff. When did you start your preparation for GATE 2012? In June 2010. (taking 2 years gap) Have you ever written GATE exam earlier? If yes what was your result? What mistakes you think you committed? Yeah, in 2011. I got only 28 marks. Reason was that I was not much prepared except some of the subjects like C,OS and DBMS. What inspired you to go for higher education? Mainly my Teachers,Parents and myself. What was your daily study routine? I was in Made easy institute. We had coaching class from 8 am to 12 pm. After that, I used to study whole day(except a nap in the afternoon). I never studied whole night. I would study upto 11 pm. Before sleeping,I would listen to my favourite music for an hour. For entertainment, I used to talk to my batchmates and do discussions on facebook groups of GATE aspirants. Did you join any coaching institute? If yes then feedback about the same? As I told, I joined Made Easy,Delhi in May,2011 for GATE preparations. I give u detailed info about its coaching. Two subjects Toc and maths were taught by a teacher named Sunderam. he is Excellent and highly qualified teacher. but he gives lecture with speed of 180km/h (I mean he is very fast). You should have basic knowledge about these two subjects otherwise u will see tamil movie in the class(u wont be able to understand anything). Four subjects- Algo,C,DS and compiler were taught by a teacher named Subba Reddy. U dont need to have any prior knowledge of these subjects. he starts from very basic things. DBMS was taught by another good teacher. CO and Soft engg were taught by another good and slow speed teacher. But some subjects were not taught very well there like networking and digital design. The teacher of digital is actually a dancer and u will more learn dance than the subject. All in all, Made easy is a good place for freshers. But the thing which matters most is your determination and hardwork. This institute has produced many toppers but at the same time, many students who couldnt even qualify the exam.

C language- Balagurusamys Ansi C, Yashwant kanetkars Test your C skills Data Structure- Tanenbaum Probability- R.D. sharma Discrete Maths- Kenneth Rosen DBMS- Ramakrishan Gherke(for SQL and relational algebra), Navathe(for ER model,B-tree and transaction and concurrency control), Bipin C desai(for Normalization) OS- Galvin, Tanenbaum, William Stallings CO- William stallings(Cache), Carl hamacher(Addressing Modes and pipelining), Morris Mano Digital design- Morris Mano Compiler design- Ullman CN- forozoun What challenges you faced during your preparation and how did you overcome them? I was previously an arts student, completed my 12th and bachelors in arts. Then I did M.sc.(cs) in which I studied only 11 subjects. Some of the GATE subjects were not there like Basic Maths,TOC,Algo,Compiler design etc. So I had to study these subjects from very basics. I always used reference books and listened to Made easy lectures carefully to overcome this problem. Nptel videos were also quite helpful. What was your exam strategy during your GATE Exam 2012? I played a gamble in GATE exam. I had already decided to attempt all the questions whether or not I know their answers. When I got the paper, I knew most of the answers to the questions which belonged to the subjects I studied well. For others, I hit flukes. There were some questions for which I had no idea, even then I attempted them and finally at 11.55am, I had finished my work of filling bubbles for all 65 questions. I believe that one has to risk if he/she wants to achieve something big in life. What tips you would like to give future GATE Aspirants? 1. Study from reference books only. Dont rely just upon notes or local authors books. Try to solve the exercises given at the end of the book. 2. Start from very basic things. Dont attempt to solve tougher things at the first stage otherwise u will lose self-confidence if u fail to solve them. 3. Keep yourself in the touch of latest informations about GATE and study materials. 4. Dont leave any subject completely. It is good to know something about all the topics as GATE papers have not been so tough these years. 5. If you are an average student, join regular coaching of some institute like ACE, Made Easy or Gateforum. If u are unable/dont want to join regular coaching, at least join some test series. 6. Belive in yourself. Thats the journey of Deepak from B.A. in a normal college to IIT Bombay, one of the finest institute of engineering in India. If he can do it, you can also do.
