USF Broadband Achievements

Broadband Internet for un-served Urban Areas of Pakistan Introduction There are approximately 489 Towns in all Districts with only 9 cities that are served. Thus there are approx. 480 un-served towns with a population of more than 24 Mil who cannot avail the benefits of Broadband. USF Broadband Program aims at provision of Broadband Internet Services to 2nd/3rd tier urban cities/towns of the country which are un-served from the Broadband perspective. There are 479 such towns with a population of approx. 24Mil. These towns have an estimated 2,000 higher secondary schools and colleges, about 1,400 vocational institutes, more than 4,000 health institutions, hundreds of distance learning centers of Allama Iqbal Open University and Virtual University, Banks, Nadra kiosks, Dist. Govt. Offices, Public Libraries and numerous other institutions that can benefit from Broadband. To bridge the digital divide and to extend the benefits of Broadband to unserved areas, USF launched Broadband Program. USFs Broadband Program aims at provision of Broadband Internet services to the unserved Towns of the country. A total subsidy of PKR 7.5 billion is being provided for all these projects and so far 412,073 broadband connections have already been provided along with the establishment of 1,041 Educational Broadband Centers and 297 Community Broadband Centers. Special emphasis is being paid laid on to educational institutions, whereby the subsidy winners will be required to set-up Computer Labs (Educational Broadband Centers) with Broadband in all the higher secondary -schools and colleges in their respective areas. The broadband program will also give boost to provision of other e-services like e-health, e-government, e-commerce etc. Salient Features of the Broadband Program Subsidy offered to the successful bidders is target based. Hence the successful bidders qualify for a subsidy based on the actual number of broadband connections provided in a given time of 18 months. Winning bidders have to establish Educational Broadband Centers (EBCs) in Higher Secondary Schools/Colleges & Libraries. These are computer labs with 5 PCs, backed by UPS and connected to Broadband Internet that is free Internet for one year plus train two trainers of the Educational Institution for smooth running of EBCs.

Winning bidders also have to establish Community Broadband Centers (CBCs) i.e. Computer Labs with at least 5 computers, printer, networked and connected to a 512Kbps Broadband internet. CBCs are for those who cannot afford a PC/Broadband connection.

The attached table Annex-I summarizes five (5) Telecom Regions to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister where Broadband Projects are being executed in 247 cities. The Annex-II contains the list of EBCs and CBCs to be inaugurated.
