There was, apparently, a football match of some

the coverage in the media, the conspiratorial part of
my brain begins to wonder if its all some great
aempt to distract the Australian populace from the

As Chrisans, as followers of Jesus, we all have a

responsibility to engage with the really important
issues, and to do so from a specic Chrisan
perspecve. We are not called to isolate ourselves
from the world but rather to enter into dialogue with
the world, boldly and condently, in order to show
society that there is the possibility of another way of
acng.

Nowthatdoesntmeanweneedtoignoreoursports.
In fact, enjoying our sporng pasmes, whether as
parcipant or spectator, is a good thing. Perhaps,
however, the challenge for those of us who claim the

As menoned recently in the Bridgeside Bullen we
will be changing the way the Fracon Rite is
celebrated during our Parish Masses between now and
the end of July. A summary of the changes can be
found below:

Essenally the changes are about when the Fracon
Ritebegins,andwhathappensthereaer.

TheFraconRitedoesnotbeginunlaertheSignof
Peaceiscompleted,thatisunlalevelofsllnesshas
returned amid the assembly. Only aer the presider
determinedthatitistherightdoeshethenbreakthe
consecrated bread in preparaon for communion,
whichaconsignalsthebeginningoftheFraconRite.

Only aer the presider has begun to break the

consecrated bread do the musicians (or, in the
absence of musicians, the assembly) begin to sing or
say The Lamb of God. It is important to not begin
this chant unl the appropriate moment. This is
parcularly important on those occasions (such as at
weekday Masses) when there is no music. We should
not preempt this acon simply because we have
nished giving the Sign of Peace to others around us.
The ming of the beginning of the Fracon Rite
belongstothepresider.

Ministers of Communion are asked to either move

into the sanctuary of the church during the Sign of
Peace or wait unl The Lamb of God has nished
beforedoingso.Inorderthatthischangeinmingnot
unduly delay our celebraon of Mass, it has been
suggested that Ministers of Communion might like to

A GREAT PROPHET HAS APPEARED
AMONG US; GOD HAS VISITED
HIS PEOPLE

CoMMuNioN: Pnn1icirn1ioN iN Sncniricr

on n CoMMooi1v?
The following arcle, wrien by Elizabeth Harrington,
was published in The Catholic Leader last weekend,
and I reproduce it here...

I had a call recently from someone checking if there

was anything in the Missal or the General Instrucon
of the Roman Missal that gives permission for the
faithful to stand with arms raised and palms turned
upwards during the Lords Prayer at Mass. If not, my
caller said, she intended to demand that the parish
prieststopthepracceimmediately.

I replied that, despite historical evidence concerning

theoransposion,nothingwassetdownintheocial
liturgical books. I then asked my enquirer if
Communion was ever distributed from the tabernacle
at Mass in her parish and when she replied in the
armave, I suggested that she might start with
eortstoeliminatethatabnormalpraccewhichalso
is not ocially sanconed but has far more serious
theologicalimplicaons.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the General

Instrucon of the Roman Missal (GIRM), the drivers
manual as it were for the Roman Missal, a revised
version of which was implemented in Australia in
2008. As explained then, while the overall content of
the GIRM has not changed, there are several key
aspects which are yet to be fully implemented.
Communion from the altar only at Mass is one of
thoseaspects.

Nowhere in the General Instrucon or other

documents regulang eucharisc pracce is
permission given to distribute hosts from the
tabernacleduringMass.

The presupposion is that hosts in the tabernacle are

usedforCommuniontothehouseboundandthatthe
normal pracce during Mass is to distribute to those
presentwhathasbeenconsecratedatthatMass.

The GIRM spells it out quite clearly: It is most

desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is
bound to do, receive the Lords body from hosts
consecrated at the same Mass so that even by
means of the signs Communion will stand out more
clearlyasaparcipaoninthesacriceactuallybeing
celebrated.(#85)

Despite this, it is not uncommon to see a minister go

tothetabernacleduringtheLambofGodandplace
on the altar a ciborium of hosts which are distributed
duringCommunion.

The dynamic of the Eucharist is one connuous

movement. In the procession of gis, the faithful
present the bread and wine for the sacrice, along
with the gi of their lives, to be blessed by God and
then received back as the Body and Blood of Christ
when they come forward in procession for Holy
Communion.

TobefedwiththeBodyofChristfromthetabernacle
andnotfromwhatwasconsecratedattheMassbeing
celebrated breaks the connecon between sacrice
andCommunion.

There can be no Communion without sacrice, and

this is symbolised most clearly when we receive
Communionfromwhatweourselveshaveoered.

I agree with what liturgical scholar, Kevin Seasoltz,

said in his 2007 book, Gods Gi Giving: In Christ and
ThroughtheSpirit:

Unfortunately, many Chrisans, perhaps especially

Roman Catholics, give the impression that the
Eucharistissimplyacommoditytobeconsumed,one
that is readily available in Communion services or in
the Tabernacle, but without any responsibility of
involvement in the whole Eucharisc acon and in
livingoutthedemandsoftheEucharistindailylife.

The reason I include this arcle in this weeks

BridgesideBullen is quite simple: the point Elizabeth
Harrington makes very much applies to our own
Parish.

The purpose of reserving the Blessed Sacrament is
twofold: the enable communion to be taken to the sick
and dying, and for personal prayer and adoraon. That
we use the Reserved Sacrament regularly to distribute
communion during our celebraon of the Eucharist
seems to be at odds with what we do during the
celebraon of Mass.

I would like our Parish to move, at some point in the
not too distant future, to a situaon where when our
community gathers to celebrate Eucharist all those
who gather receive Communion from the hosts that
are consecrated at that celebraon of the Eucharist.

Before doing so, I would welcome feedback from the
Parish community as to your thoughts on the maer,
in parcular any advantages or disadvantages you
might see in such a proposal, along with any concerns
you may have.

As in the past, I would ask you to communicate your
thoughts either in wrien form or by email so that I
can consider all submissions before proceeding to
make a decision about our Parishs future pracce. My
email address can be found on the front page of the
BridgesideBullen.

Those who have more come to the aid of
those who lack, and we are constantly
together. Over all that we receive we
bless the Maker of all things through his
Son Jesus Christ and through the Holy
Spirit. And on the day called Sunday
there is a meeting in one place of those
who live in cities or the country, and the
memoirs of the apostles or the writing of
the prophets are read as long as time
permits. Then we all stand up together
and offer prayers. And, as said before,
when we have finished the prayer, bread
is brought, and wine and water, and the
president similarly sends up prayers and
thanksgivings to the best of his ability,
and the congregation assents, saying the
Amen; the distribution and reception of
the consecrated [elements] by each one
takes place and they are sent to the
absent by the deacons. Those who
prosper, and who so wish, contribute,
each one as much as each chooses to.
What is collected is deposited with the
president, and he takes care of orphans
and widows, and those who are in want
on account of sickness or any other cause,
and those who are in bonds, and the
strangers who are sojourners among [us],
and, briefly, he is the protector of all
those in need. We all hold this common
gathering on Sunday, since it is the first
day, on which God transforming darkness
and matter made the universe, and Jesus
Christ our Saviour rose from the dead on
the same day.

So that we might receive Communion in a t and
properway,pleasebeawareofthefollowing:

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
formofreverence,includingagenuecon,should
thereforebeavoided.
Communion by selfinncon (selfdipping) is
neverpermied,sincewereceiveCommunionand
never take Communion. Please refrain from this
inappropriateacon.
We regret that we do not have the physical
facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and
respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling to
receive Communion while part of the procession,
since this is contrary to the nature of the
Communion procession itself. Your cooperaon in
honouring this request is very much appreciated,
andwethankyouforyourconsideraon.
