CLIENTS COMMENTS CLIENT The copy-writer Miyako Maekita, and her husband who is an advertising film producer SITE 92.30 m2 where beautiful plum trees and wild flowers grew, which made it look like a real garden inside this residential area WHY SEJIMA rejected the idea that a house should represent economic power and attract attention light, clean and white, no bravado at all A house is a place for attuning your mind, for tempering the body, so it needs light and dark, the right sense of tension, so it really doesnt have to be cosy. Something like a temporary perch Its quite small, not really a place to relax. a neutral house like a blank canvas, no obstacle to living or raising children. a house like a one-room studio

ARCHITECTS IDEA LDK to challenge the LDK housing scheme: 2-3 bedrooms + living room (L) + dining room (D) + kitchen (K). Inside this white cube is an unconventional living space where a family of five can perch within the ecosystem of the Japanese family and community. house as compact as possible one-room lifestyle, an accumulation of different rooms linked together 4+1 = big livingroom, bedrooms small, but get only 18 square meters at most against one bedroom per person, and then squeeze in a common space almost as an afterthought. = why not make lots of little rooms? DIVIDING THINGS dividing things up, a more definitive dismantling of the space than the LDK model. By subdividing the space into small rooms, one could be free to choose. PRIVACY bedroom smaller, for instance, one might gain another retreat, thus offering a choice according to ones mood. NO ORDINARY WALLS walls to render independent rooms together with holes in the walls to connect them. Thus the rooms feel both connected and independent. NO WALLPAPER (superficial decoration) = painted interior SPATIAL COMPOSITION eliminate the feeling of depth. makes the room itself look flat, like a photograph. You cant tell how deep or shallow the space is. OPENINGS each cutting only very incidentally into the other

DESIGN BEHIND THE HOUSE The house appears as a white closed cube as it is located in one of the corners of the site. The door is fused with the wall, the doormat and a small cantilever being the only signs of its presence. Furthermore, instead of conventional windows, a few flat, square cuts are made on the exterior walls, without any seeming order. The logic comes from the inside. Refusing to create stereotyped rooms with a collection of arranged furniture, Kazuyo Sejima proposed to reduce each room to particular furniture or an action. For instance, the bedroom of the children is composed of one room-bed and a room-table. In that way, 17 different rooms were created, which together were arranged on a 77.68 m2 floor area and distributed on two floors with the tearoom on the roof. SAVING SPACE Having such a small surface, it was used to its maximum. The structure of the house is built with steel sheets, which reduces the thickness of the external walls to 50 mm and the interior walls to 16 mm. In that way, the structure, walls and the floors merge together and each part appears to have the same weight. CIRCULATION Interpreting the idea of a one room studio, the architect connected the individual rooms. She made cuts in the internal walls of the adjoining rooms, and left them without any glass. This offered new possibilities. Some rooms look outside through another rooms window. The air flows freely through these openings from room to room, and the boy or his cat can enter or exit through these openings at will. No space is shut off completely. Consequently, offering such a choice of different actions, the idea of privacy turns elastic. The members of the family can choose their place according to their moods, wanting to be alone or with others. INSULATION AND AIR CONDITIONING minimum of insulation. exterior is coated with reflective paint, so summer heat can only get in through sealed portals, but theres no stopping radiation, so in the end we put in insulation. In Europe they typically use a thickness of 100 millimetres, but in this house theres no more than 30. Sheet metal cools very quickly, so the insulation prevents the coolness from passing through. We used very few air-conditioning units. There are ducts that go to the very highest point, which serve to return warm air to the bottom and circulate it throug out. Theres good airflow overall through the rooms.

The proposed site is just on the fringe of Melbourne CBD. This maintains the urban and suburban qualities which is similar to that of the existing site in Tokyo. The presence of a bend in the proposed site contrasts the grid planning of Melbourne city. This captures the charateristics of the existing site.

PRESENT HOUSE CONDITIONS The Japanese-based house is proposed to be sited in Fitzroy, Victoria. The existing construction details of the house resulted in a poor energy rating when relocated into Melbournes southern hemisphere weather conditions. With the ratings of zero stars and -219points, Sejimas Plumgrove house is in need of major modifications to improve its energy ratings in its proposed site. The Plumgrove house is a small cube-like structure which is lightly constructed. While maintaining the houses North point and siting it in Melbourne, this posed issues with the direction of the sun and position of windows. Its larger windows now face south, away from the suns rays. With external walls measuring 50mm and internal walls measuring only 16mm, thermal insulation is poor. Moreover, the use of single glazed window panels throughout the building does not filter the suns heat effectively. The use of timber flooring on the upper floors are not sustainable and unsuitable for Melbournes climate conditions. PROPOSED MODIFICATIONS TO IMPROVE HOUSES ENERGY RATING room layout The orientation of the walls and windows effects the amount of heat entering and leaving a home. The general rule is to orient the house so the main wall and window areas face north, also minimise windows to the west and, to a lesser extent, to the east. Because the task requirements do not permit the switching of its North point, the houses internal spaces can be reorientated to achieve a higher performance. By grouping rooms of similar use together you can minimise the areas that need to be heated or cooled by using doors to separate areas. Also rooms that use hot water, such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundries should be located together. This will reduce the length of pipes used, the amount of heat lost from the pipes and allow for more efficient use of your hot water system. window placement, sizing and shading Well-planned and protected windows improve comfort and reduce the need for heating in winter and cooling in summer. The North-facing windows receive winter sun, allowing light and warmth into the house. East and west-facing windows receive excessive summer sun so should be kept small or be well shaded. Shading devices, such as awnings, external blinds and verandahs reduce heat gain through windows in summer. Glass can be treated to reduce the amount of summer heat gain, however, remember that treated glass reduces heat gain and light in winter as well. Therefore, only certain panels will be treated to maximise efficiency. Internal window coverings trap a layer of still air between the glass surface and the covering, which reduces heat flow through the glass. Appropriate coverings include drapes, Holland blinds, Roman blinds and Austrian blinds and pelmets. In cold winter areas double glazing will be considered for all windows. Thermal Cut aluminium frames will be used on doors and windows to improve insulation and heat efficiency. materials Timber floorings will be provided by a local supplier specialising in sustainable woods. Storm water will be used to harvest natural rain to minimize use of piped water. Solar panels can be used to provide energy to heat water. Insulation will be improved in the external walls to be more heat efficient.

1. CAR PARK/TEA HOUSE

The carpark is situated on the opposite side of the land. The reason is to encourage the use of bicyles and public transport conveniently located within the area rather than using a car. The carpark is also tucked away under a ramp leading to its roof. Inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, the additional space created on the roof will house a little pavilion in relation to its surrounding gardens and water feature.

2. VEGETATION:
The carefully manicured Japenese gardens not only beautifies the site, it is also designed to improve the environmantal qualities on site. The strategically placed trees will provide shade to the house, allowing winter and summer energy gain/loss.

3. POND:
The pond was added as a quality to our Japanese inspired landscape, bringing a serene quality to the site. In addition to that, the pond plays a major role in cooling the site during summer via evaporation. A simple yet effective method of controlling the temperature of the surrounding context.

NULLABOR TIMBER

Recycled Timber Nullarbor will continue to search for and acquire as many recycled timbers that Australian demolition sites offer. We will demand careful salvage of these products to maximize the potential for re-processing and will encourage and educate the demolition industry to understand the negative impact on outdated, destructive demolition practices. Nullarbor asks potential clients to consider a recycled alternative wherever possible, keeping in mind flexibility of species and sizes. We will assist consumers to avoid size specific and species specific criteria to maximise the recycled timber options and limit the energy required for re-processing along with limiting any waste product. Nullarbor is directly responsible for the salvage of several thousand cubic meters of Recycled Native Timbers. Put simply - many of the timbers are virtually impossible to find elsewhere!
