SPEEDING UP CAPACITOR BANK DESIGN

EPCOS offers the new AlCap software for complete scaling of capacitor banks free of charge. It greatly simplifies calculation of link circuit banks, which used to be complex and iterative. Complete scaling now merely requires input of the most important parameters.

ersion 3.0 of the AlCap software from EPCOS allows capacitor banks, for instance for link circuits, to be scaled in a simple and time-saving way. The calculation can be performed for banks of either screw-terminal or snap-in capacitors. The software may be downloaded free of charge from the EPCOS website (www.epcos.com). The program considers the influence of forced air or can base cooling. By cooling the capacitors, the ripple current capability is increased by a factor of two compared with a solution without cooling. The number of capacitors can thus be reduced for the same load, resulting in lower system costs. In addition to the useful life, the ripple current capability and the volume of the bank, the program also displays the best solutions by means of a price index. To scale a capacitor bank, the AlCap program refers to the following capacitor types in the current data book: screw-terminal, snap-in, four-pin snap-in and four-claw solder pin. To scale the bank, the user must specify the rated capacitance and voltage, the ambient temperature, the rated current as a function of frequency as well as the number of capacitors to be connected. The subsequent calculation optimizes the capacitors with respect to their cost, volume and number. The various ways of doing this will be explained on the basis of an example of scaling the link circuit of a frequency converter with screw-terminal capacitors. The capacitor
