This project looks at the nature of screen and print
based communication. On screen endless editing and reorganisation form a dynamic but amorphous body of opinion that never really commits to one. Twitter condenses messages to bitesized sentenses that communicate beyond their word limit and are open to a myriad of interpretation. Printed media forces defnition - the editing has been done and the opinion formed. It`s permanence defnes a point frozen in time open to future interpretation but unable to adapt to or accomodate new data. Working with our partners for the project, Ico Design you will visually interprete the deeper meaning of a tip of the iceberg tweet to create a manifesto to be published through UbyU. The books you produce will be exhibited at Critical Tensions, the 10th Annual St Bride Library conference (http://stbride.org/events/ criticaltensions/programme.html) Task This project requires you to choose a partner to work with from your group. They could either be a designer or an illustrator. Having done this you should then choose one of the following hashtags: #give; #riot; #poverty; #prot; #wealth; #community; # hedonism; #play; #share; #vote; #brand; #exploit. Search this hashtag on Twitter and then choose one or a number of related tweets to work with. IMPORTANT! Once you have chosen the tweets you are to work with, you cannot change or add to them. You are then to use these tweets as the starting point for a 24 page manifesto. To do this you need to have chosen tweets that relate to bigger issues and gain an understanding of these issues through background research. Your manifesto can use typography/ photography/ illustration or a combination of all of these things. You can use any medium but the book will eventually be printed and bound by bespoke online publishers UbyU so you must follow the technical specifcations provided by them. Initial Inspiration Futurist Manifestos/ Blast/ Zap Comix/ 1960s American Underground Press/ the Push Pin Graphic/ Fluxus/ Oz/ early issues of I.D./ Pedro Bell/ Emory Douglas/ High Street/ Ambit/ Situationist Graffti/ Public Address System/ Ken Garland, First Things First/ Obey the Giant/ El Lissitsky/ Dada typography/ Marian Bantjes/ Mieke Gerritzen/ Adbusters etc.. ** FdA Graphic Design & FdA Illustration Unit 6. # Manifesto ICO Design Live brief

Deadline: 10am 26/10/11 Research Over the summer you should have produced a body of research that looks at how your practice relates to a professional context. This means looking at studio practice, design management methodologies, technological developments, economic strategies, the contemporary market for design and illustration, contractual and legal conventions, ownership, work fow, production, marketing and promotional methodologies. You should by now have collated this research into a bound document. Industry Partnered Project Journal You will take part in a project set by ICO Design (brief attached.) While working on this project will be expected to keep a Journal. This journal will act as a detailed daily record of your experience, it MUST total 20 days and include personal objectives/ aims/ work undertaken/ skills & knowledge acquired/ problems encountered/ contacts/ ideas/ plans/ and most importantly an entry for every day. Evaluative Report After completing the live project you are to Evaluate your work based learning in its entirety through a 2000 word evaluative report. Discuss what you have learnt and how this learning will infuence your experience in the second year of this course and beyond. How will it affect your choice of personal research project? How did you ensure that you were on top of things during the placement? What did you learn and how might this be relevant to future practice? How did your experience relate to the times we are living in? What economic/ social factors have affected your experience? Has it infuenced your career plans? Set yourself aims and objectives for putting this work into practice these are just some of the things you should be addressing in your evaluation.Your research and the live project are designed to act as a learning experience and it is worth remembering that you will be assessed on your ability to understand and evaluate those experiences rather than simply dictating what you did or how well you performed. Where you did a placement, what you did for your live project and the work you produced are not as important as your ability to analyse what you did, record this process, relate it to the work you do and use this knowledge to inform future work. ** FdA Graphic Design & FdA Illustration Unit 6.
