SECTION 1 (COMPULSORY)

From a historical prospective most safety legislation were designed to be prescriptive and reactive in nature, simply aiming to prevent re-occurrence via specific codes and standards, not by carefully understanding the risk. Base on the above statement answer the following: (a) Discuss the importance of risk assessment as a requirement of safety legislation. (b) List and discuss the various stages involved in the risk assessment process.

2. There are five steps involved in conducting a JSA, LIST and DISCUS the steps that must be carried out for a JSA to be effective. There is now substantial international acceptance of both the scale of manual handling hazards and the methods of prevention. Modern medical and scientific knowledge stresses the importance of an ergonomic approach to remove or reduce the risk of manual handling injury. An effective way to achieve this is to develop a manual handling management program (MHMP). Base on the above statement answer the following: (a) (b) 4. Discuss the basic elements of a fire protection program for the workplace and explain why is it important to have such a program?

An employer shall ensure that a hazardous chemical is not used, handled or stored in the industrial relations establishment unless the prescribed requirement concerning identification, chemical safety data sheets and worker instruction and training are met. (OSH Act 2004 sec. 6(4), as amended 2006). In order for an employer to adequately comply with this section of the legislation there are important steps that must be followed. As the companys safety and health professional you are required to: (1) Identify and discuss the steps that your company must take in order to comply with sec. 6(4) of the Act.
