Experience unspoilt nature

Have you ever seen Germanys biggest bird, the sea-eagle? Its possible to experience this here in our region, e.g. at the observation post in Rathjensdorf. When paddling leisurely on a local lake or river you may have the chance to see the kingfisher or with a bit of luck the amusing fish otter. This animal which was nearly extinct is once again settling in the Holsteinische Schweiz.

Hiking
Youll experience nature best of all by listening, feeling and smelling when you are on foot. Whether with friends or a partner: the Holsteinische Schweiz which is rich in forests and lakes is the most impressive area for walking in the north of the country. Our suggestion: use a boat on a lake for part of the way. I European Walking Path E1/E6 for hiking tours lasting several days I Hiking paths and round trips close to nature

With more than 200 clear lakes, gentle hills and light foliage tree forests the Holsteinische Schweiz nature reserve is one of the most exciting parts of Schleswig-Holstein. Once huge glaciers formed this landscape. Rare forms of animals and plants have since settled here. The reserve extends to 750 square kilometres and is therefore the largest nature reserve of the northern most county of the Federal Republic. To mention a few more superlatives: in its area the largest lake (Groer Plner See, 3000 ha) and the

highest mountain (Bungsberg, 168 metres) are situated and the largest bird in Germany (sea-eagle, up to 2,5 m wing span) lives here. However, this part of Germany recommends itself not only for its magnificent nature but also for its windmills, its manor houses and farms which youll come across when touring through the country or visiting mansions and castles in historic towns.
