Changing of the Guard in Hurons Finance Department

By Lisa Yako Cathy Ramey has served as Hurons Finance Director since 2000, but will soon be entering a new phase of her life with her retirement on June 28. Cathy closes out a long tenure as an employee of the City of Huron, one which began while she was still in high school. After moving away from Huron for some time, Cathy returned in 1983 and gained employment in the Citys finance department in the accounts payable division. From there, she worked her way up and was named interim Finance Director in 1999. By the end of 2000, she was officially hired as the Citys Finance Director. Cathy has exhibited admirable diligence in keeping the Citys finances in order and has met the challenges of the job with gusto. She stated Anything that came up, I just put my head down and plowed through it. As the number of staffers in the Finance Department dwindled, Cathys responsibilities and workload increased. Yet, her attitude was always positive. Though Cathy stated that she will truly miss all of the people with whom she has worked over the years, she is looking forward to her retirement. She plans to take the summer off and then possibly look for a part-time position elsewhere. Cathys replacement, Pam Snell, will take over as Finance Director, and is now training under Cathys tutelage. Pam certainly recognizes the benefits of the time

she has spent with Cathy learning the ins and outs of the Citys finance department. Anytime you can have your predecessor work with you and see the day-today operation is valuable. explained Pam. Nonetheless, Pam comes to this position with 15 years of experience working in municipal and governmental finance departments. Most recently, she worked as the Finance Officer for Erie County. Both Pam and Cathy feel that preparations for the transfer of responsibilities have proceeded smoothly, and Pam is looking forward to the challenge of serving as Hurons new Finance Director. Many thanks to you, Cathy, and a warm welcome, Pam!

City Hires Architect Firm to Complete Plans for New Shelter at Boat Basin
By Lisa Yako At the regular meeting of the Huron City Council on June 11, council members approved a contract with City Architecture of Cleveland for the purpose of creating plans for a three-season shelter for the boat basin. If the plans are approved, the new shelter would replace the existing pavilions located just to the north of the boat basin building. Though the pavilions have served the public well, they are beginning to show their age and are only useful for a few months of the year. The proposed shelter could be used for the majority of the year, and it would have full utilities with refrigeration and grilling opportunities. A three-season shelter has been on the Citys radar for quite some time. In 2010, the City created plans for improvements at Fabens Park and Nickel Plate Beach. These plans proposed creating three-season shelters at both parks. Though the shelters were never constructed at either park, the City is now considering building the shelter at the boat basin. According to Doug Steinwart, Operations Manager for the Huron Parks & Recreation, The three season structure has the ability to bring in new uses to the shoreline, repurpose valuable land, and add a new public amenity in an important location. The shelter would complement the existing marina building. The Parks & Recreation Dept. has seen an increase in demand for shelter rentals and public events in our park system. This proposed waterfront pavilion would serve as a public amenity for picnics, civic groups, and small events. The total cost for City Architectures preliminary design is $12,200. The money for this is solely from revenue

generated by user fees at the boat basin marina. City Manager, Andy White, explained Doug (Steinwart) has promoted his budget in a responsible fashion, and he has used the dollars he has wisely. As a result, he has the availability of this surplus revenue. Rather than have the money get stuck in operations, Doug has the presence of mind to forecast out in the future and invest in a plan. The City expects the plans will be completed by City Architecture by the end of the summer. Once the plans are completed, the City will be able to apply the design to shelters at other parks should they choose to do so. All in all, the proposed shelter will be a revenue-producing amenity available for a wide variety of public uses and will truly enhance Hurons waterfront.

We all have the tendency to assume that the biggest polluters of our waterways are big corporations. Of course, when incidents like the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico occur, it is easy to point our fingers and think that we play no role in the health of our waterways. Yet, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nonpoint source pollution is the Nations leading source of water quality degradation. Though, nonpoint source pollution generally results from land runoff, precipitation, atmospheric deposition, drainage, seepage or hydrologic modification, the combined effect of chemicals and runoff from individual homes can also be a major contributor to the demise of our lakes and rivers. As homeowners, we all make choices as to how we landscape our yards and what chemicals we chose to use in and around our home. According to the EPA, all of the paved surfaces around our homes prevent water from percolating down into the ground, cause runoff to accumulate, and funnel into storm drains at high speeds. This rapidly flowing water causes erosion. Further, paved surfaces transfer heat to runoff, thereby increasing the temperature of receiving waters. Native species of fish and other aquatic life cannot survive in these warmer waters. Therefore, when planning your landscaping and hardscaping, choose native plants that require less watering and fewer chemicals and opt for wooden decks, gravel or brick pathways, and rock gardens that allow water to slowly percolate into the soil. Rain gardens, which essentially serve as a retention pond, are also a great means of diverting water from storm sewers. Rain barrels also are a great option for diverting water while saving you money for your future watering needs. Workshops on creating rain gardens and constructing your own rain barrel are readily available. When choosing what chemicals you bring into your home, choose wisely. Not only can many of these chemicals be harmful to you and your family, but they can also

be harmful to the environment. Household cleaning products, pesticides, paints and sealers can be a significant source of toxic pollution, whether they are used inside the home and garage, or on the outside surfaces of a building, deck, patio, or swimming pool. If you choose to use these products, always follow the directions on the can or bottle and never dispose of the excess down the drain. The Erie County landfill will collect household waste on the following dates in 2013: June 29, July 27, August 24, September 28, and October 26. If you plan to bring items to the landfill on one of the collection dates, you must first register by contacting Lisa Beursken at (419) 602-4013 or by email at LBeursken@eriecounty. oh.gov no later than the Thursday before the collection date. Of course, you can avoid having to bring chemicals to the landfill if you choose more natural products in the first place. Common household items such as vinegar, salt, and baking soda are great alternatives for cleaning and have a myriad of other uses around the house. If you feel the need to buy a commercial cleaner, there are many options for earth-friendly products. To help you in your effort to choose the best and safest cleaning products, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tests a host of products and gives each one a grade based on their potential to cause asthma or other respiratory problems, skin allergies and irritation, developmental and reproductive toxicity, cancer, and environmental dangers. The results of EWGs findings are released in their annual Guide to Healthy Cleaning which is available at their web site, www.ewg.org. Finally, if you have unused prescription and over-thecounter drugs, never flush them down the toilet or wash them down the drain. Area police departments, including Huron, have drop boxes for unused drugs, and they ensure that the drugs will be properly destroyed. Hence, through good and conscientious choices, everyone truly can make a difference in promoting the health of our waterways.

The Sandusky State Theatre Names New Executive Director

Steve Dice, the Sandusky State Theatre Board President, today announced the hiring of David L. Taylor, of Dallas, Texas as the new Executive Director. Taylor assumes his duties next week. Taylor was formerly the General Manager of the Majestic Theatre in Dallas and was the Director of the McKinney (Texas) Performing Arts Center prior to his current assignment. David has the right combination of experience and enthusiasm our Board was seeking, explained Dice. We had many well-qualified applicants for the position and after two interviews with our Search Committee, Board and community members, Mr. Taylor rose to the top. Taylor has experience in all aspects of

theatre management. An Illinois native, Mr. Taylor has a B.A. from the University of IllinoisSpringfield and is a member of several arts organizations. Returning to the Midwest has been in my long-range plans and joining an organization like the State Theatre will fulfill many of my personal goals, said Taylor. The Sandusky area has a jewel with the theatre downtown, on the Bay and I plan to continue building upon the great foundation that is already in place.
