The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family. Notes from the Pastor: Anniversaries are Gods blessings both for the celebrant or celebrants and the people or community who celebrates with them. A wedding anniversary is a blessing not just for the couple and family but also to the whole parish community. Thats why I always encourage all of you, no matter how shy you are, to celebrate your wedding anniversary publicly. I always tried to celebrate my anniversary of ordination with the community as the priesthood belongs to the community. Thats what we did last April on my 27th year. As I have mentioned last weeks bulletin, I am now into my third year as your pastor here at the parishes of Saint Michael and Saint Joseph. Like wedding anniversaries and my ordination, I also celebrated this with praise and thanksgiving. It certainly gives me an opportunity to thank God again and to humbly recognize the gift of service that He has given me. I did not merit this service. It is certainly a precarious gift flowing from Gods loving mercy. Secondly, it is also an opportunity to examine what we have done in the parish? Am I shepherding the parish to the direction God wants us to be? In my reflection, I come to the certainty, based on the churchs documents and most of all of my loyalty to the hierarchy, that we are heading in the right direction. First I am grateful again for all our volunteers in the many ministries that are going on in the parish. May God bless them always for their dedication and unselfish offering of their time, talent, and treasure! But as a parish we need to move as one body. Hence, it is not just making things happen, but that things happen because a group of parishioners united together, do it. While we appreciate individual efforts, it is teamwork (as in team sports) that is most important! If some things are done by lone rangers it is not really good, because it is not the community that does it! The danger here is the great temptation of pride, taking personal credit for actions! If not for me, that could not have been done! This is the pharisaical attitude that our Lord Jesus criticized. The positive aspect of individual efforts is that it provides an opportunity for the community to see and reflect that they need to get involved. This is what I wanted to point out and the direction we should be heading. The challenges that have been facing us since I got here persisted to drag our growth both spiritually and physically. I am referring to the challenge of getting more people involved. Last year I already mentioned this; there are some who take heed, but there are still more that need to be touched. Of course, it is only with Gods grace that we can serve Him. I will continue to pray and I ask all of you to pray that more people will be moved to His service in the community! Congratulations to Marcel and Helen Normand who celebrates their fifty first wedding anniversary this Sunday! Their blessing is our blessing! May God bless them always! Also, one of our parishioners, Adeline Harris, unfortunately had a stroke last Tuesday. She is always in church every time we have mass weekdays and weekends and leads us in our rosary before the mass. She lives alone at home when that happened. She had to crawl for one hour to get to her phone to call for help! She is still at Via Christi hospital and is stable. She can move but her speech is affected a little bit and is in rehab. She desires to get well completely and return home. She has no other relatives here in this area and she certainly needs help driving around and running some errands. If she would not get back to normal, she will have no choice but to go with her only living son who lives in Chicago. So include her in your prayers and if you happened to be at Via Christi, she said she would be happy for a visit. God bless you all! Fr. Roger

Humility: Guardian of All the Virtues When the seven deadly sins come up, most of us immediately think of Pride as the Golden Anniversary worst--the Mother of all vices, since most sins can be traced to it. It was through pride Attention all Anniversary Committee Members!! Our meeting is that the devil became the devil. Pride was also the sin of our First Parents, who wanted to be as great as God. A proud individual believes himself as the source of his own reset to July 8, at 6PM at the hall. Thank you! excellence. The Virtue of Humility causes us to acknowledge our limitations; therefore, its the opposite of Pride. We spend so much time seeking honor, to be chosen, Totus Tuus and to avoid being forgotten. The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived This coming Monday, June 24, the Church will celebrate the birthday of St. John, the Baptist. This is a big deal, for the Church only celebrates the birthdays on earth of three: Our Lord, His Mother, and St. John, the Baptist. You would think that St. Peter would be more important than John. Not so, according to Church Fathers. It was John who concluded the Old Testament and broke into the New Testament. He introduced Our Lord to the world--the One whose shoelaces he was not worthy to untie. He was born six months before Jesus and his mother, St. Elizabeth, was a cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was the prophet, the last of the Old Law, and the Forerunner, therefore, of Jesus, the Messiah. Since St. John was born free of original sin, his birthday is celebrated instead of the day of his death, as is usual with the saints. From the beginning, the lifestyles of John and Jesus differed. John was an Old Testament prophet who preached sin and repentance. He came neither eating nor drinking. As a nomad, he came out of the wilderness fasting. He is the stern ascetic who expected the crowds to come to him. In contrast, Jesus sought out the crowds, moved out among the people to proclaim the Kingdom. The Son of Man came eating and drinking and mingled with sinners and outcasts, the lame and the lepers. Jesus emphasized Gods love and mercy, not His righteousness and judgment. John preached a hard line, an unbending truth. Repent, cut down on your food and drink, get rid of excess material baggage, fast on Fridays for peace, simplify your lifestyle, tighten your belts, be ready--unbending truth. But in Jesus, truth is tempered by compassion. Jesus in the anointed one who preached the good news to the poor. He is the bending, kind one, who promises mercy to the contrite sinner. No doubt, Jesus started out as a follower of John, the Baptist. He surely listened to him preach, all the while standing aside. Crowds surged out into the desert to see and hear John who wore a rough coat of camels hair and survived on locusts and wild honey. The people wanted to hear him, whether it was just curiosity or a revival zeal they possessed. Respected for his fearlessness, he denounced the civil ruler, Herod, as well as the Jewish authorities when he felt they deserved it. The price of his courage would be his head! Yet, Jesus paid him the grand tribute, I assure you that John, the Baptist, is greater than any man who has ever lived.
