Einfhrung

Introduction
The SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules are intended for use in optical PROFIBUS field bus networks. They allow the conversion of electrical PROFIBUS interfaces (RS 485) to optical PROFIBUS interfaces and vice-versa. You can integrate the modules in existing PROFIBUS field bus networks to make use of the well-known advantages of optical transmission techniques. It is also possible to design a complete PROFIBUS field bus network using optical link modules in a bus, star or ring topology. Each OLM12M has three independent channels consisting of a transmitter and receiver section. Channel 1 is an electrical port (RS 485) designed as a 4-wire terminal block with a shield clip. Channels 2 and 3 are the optical ports. The fiber-optic cables are connected via duplex sockets. The power supply is 24 V direct voltage. LEDs signal the current status and any faults/errors during operation.

With HCS, preassembled cables, cables sold by the meter, and connector attachment tools are available. The following maximum RS 485 segment lengths can be implemented on channel 1 with SIMATIC NET PROFIBUS cables: Segment Length for Cable Type Transmission Rate in Kbps 187.5 500 1500 12000 Table 2: LAN cable LAN cable with PE sheath Underground cable 800 m 400 m 200 m 100 m Trailing cable LAN cable for festoons 700 m 400 m 200 m 100 m 0 m to 300 m Distance Between Two OLM12M Modules 0.1 m to 50 m
Maximum Possible Length of the RS 485 Bus Segments on Channel 1 Using a signaling contact (relay with floating contacts), various errors/faults on the modules can be signaled, for example to a control room. The module is constructed as a compact, stable metal casing that can be installed either on a standard rail or on any other flat surface. For the standard application, no adjustments are necessary when installing the module. For special applications, the module is configured with a maximum of ten easily accessible switches.

3.1
General Functions
Functions Not Dependent on Mode
Transmission Rate
The SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules support the transmission rates12 Mbps (standard setting), 1.5 Mbps, 500 Kbps and 187.5 Kbps.
Signal Regeneration
The SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules regenerate the signal shape and amplitude of the received data. With this function, it is possible to cascade any number of modules in a bus topology, and up to 55 modules in a ring topology on fiber-optic cable connections. The sections below and the appendix contain more detailed information.
3.2
Line Monitoring
With the Monitoring, Send Test Pulses and Monitor Echo functions, the SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link module can monitor the connected optical paths for breaks on the FO cable.
Monitoring
The SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link module monitors the bus activity on the optical receive channels. If there is no bus activity, for example due to a cable break, the system LED is switched to red and the signaling contact activated after approximately 200 ms on the single-fiber ring and after approximately 600 ms on the optical bus.
+
Echo Monitoring
Insecure fiber-optic cable connectors or extraneous light entering the open FO cable are not detected as faults.
If an optical link module sends a frame on an optical channel in the ring (active) mode, the OLM12M expects an echo. If no echo is received for a specified number of frames, the system LED is changed to red and the signaling contact is activated.
Segmentation
If a monitoring or echo monitoring error occurs on an optical channel, the optical link module assumes a cable break and disables the transmitter on this channel for user data. This segments (separates) the connected field bus subnet. Following this, test pulses are sent on the segmented channels. These regular light pulses indicate whether or not the optical path is functioning correctly or not (if there is a break on a single fiber of a duplex FO cable). These test pulses are suppressed internally and not passed on to the other channels. The segmentation is canceled automatically as soon as the receiver detects a light pulse.
6ZB55303AB000BA0/01
Combinations of these basic types are also possible. It is also possible to combine one or more electrical RS 485 bus segments with these network topologies. Redundant optical rings are not supported by the OLM12M.
4.1
Bus Topology
The advantage of this topology is that large distances can be covered and that any number of active bus nodes (masters) and passive bus nodes (slaves) can be connected to each optical link module.
Mode settings: L=Line, I=Inactive Figure 2: Optical Bus Structure The individual SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules are connected together in pairs by a duplex FO cable. All the optical channels connected to the optical bus structure are switched to the Line mode. The optical channels at the start and end of the bus must be switched to the Inactive mode if they are not used. Individual DTEs or a complete PROFIBUS segment with a maximum of 31 nodes can be connected to each optical link module via the electrical channel with its RS 485 interface. With the monitoring function, the individual FO cable sections can be monitored by the optical link modules connected to it. If an optical link module drops out or if an FO cable breaks, the network is broken up into two subnetworks. Problem-free operation is possible within these subnetworks.

Star Topology
Several SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules are connected together to form an active PROFIBUS star coupler. Further SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules are connected to these OLMs via FO cable. The SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules of the star coupler are interconnected via the electrical channels.
Mode settings: L=Line, I=Inactive Figure 3: Network Structure of an Optical Star Topology All the optical channels connected to the star structure are switched to the Line mode. Unconnected optical channels must be set to the Inactive mode. The monitoring function allows the FO cable to be monitored by both connected SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules. Even if only one transmission direction fails, the segmentation function associated with the monitoring ensures that the entire connection is separated from the network. In the star topology, this means that only the DTE on the disturbed path is separated from the network, problem-free operation continues in the remaining network.

4.3
Please remember that only one optical channel can be set to the Ring (active) mode per optical single-fiber ring.
Mode settings: A=Ring (active), P=Ring (passive), I=Inactive Figure 4: Optical Single-Fiber Ring with SIMATIC NET Optical Link Modules The optical channels that act as Passive Nodes must be set to the Ring (passive) mode. Only passive nodes (slaves) can be connected to the SIMATIC NET optical link modules belonging to Passive Nodes. SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules in the Ring (passive)mode can be cascaded in the single-fiber ring. Up to 55 SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link modules can be operated in a single-fiber ring. Individual DTEs or a complete PROFIBUS segment with a maximum of 31 nodes can be connected to each SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link module via the electrical channel with its RS 485 interface. To avoid noise being coupled into the single-fiber ring via channel 1, it is advisable to connect the passive nodes to channel 1 over the shortest possible distance (ideal situation: one node via bus connector and short LAN cable section to OLM12M channel 1).
In an optical link module or a passive node with an optical interface drops out or if there is a break on the FO cable, the entire single-fiber ring breaks down. Unconnected optical channels must be set to the Inactive mode.

Combined Topologies
Bus, star and ring topologies can be mixed. Some examples of mixed topologies are shown below.
Mode settings: A=Ring (active), L=Line, I=Inactive, P = Ring (passive) Figure 5: Connecting an Optical Bus Structure to the Active Nodes of an Optical Single-Fiber Ring. In Figure 5, the connection of an optical single-fiber ring to an optical bus structure is implemented via a SIMATIC NET optical link module operated as an Active Node in the single-fiber ring. Within the bus structure, you can connect both active and passive nodes as required. Within the optical single-fiber ring, only passive nodes can be connected.
6ZB55303AB000BA0/01
Mode settings: A=Ring (active), P=Ring (passive), L=Line, I=Inactive Figure 6: Connection of an Optical Bus Structure to a Passive Node of an Optical Single-Fiber Ring Figure 6 shows the connection of an optical single-fiber ring with an optical bus structure via a SIMATIC NET optical link module that is operated in the single-fiber ring as a Passive Node. The bus structure is therefore an extension of the optical single-fiber ring. Within the optical single-fiber ring and the bus structure you can, therefore, only connect passive nodes.
6ZB55303AB000BA0/01
Mode settings: A=Ring (active), P=Ring (passive), I=Inactive Figure 7: Connection of Two Optical Single-Fiber Rings via a Passive Node. Figure 7 shows the connection of two optical single-fiber rings via a SIMATIC NET optical link module operated in the single-fiber ring on the left of the picture as a passive node and in the single-fiber ring on the right of the picture as an Active Node. The optical single-fiber ring on the right in the picture is therefore an extension of the optical single-fiber ring on the left of the picture. Within both optical single-fiber rings, you can, therefore, only connect passive nodes.

Modes
Each optical channel can be switched separately to one of four different modes. With one exception, any combination of the modes on the two channels is possible. The exception is the combination of ring (passive) on both channels of a SIMATIC NET optical link module since this combination implicitly means a multimaster connection to the optical single-fiber rings. You can set the following modes:
Line
Use this mode to set up optical bus topologies. The line monitoring of the optical channel is active (only when OLM12M modules are used exclusively). A break on the fiber-optic cable on the receive channel is indicated by the LED system and the signaling contact (only if you set Monitor = on).
Ring (active)
Use this mode to set up optical ring topologies. In this mode, the optical channel is the coordinator (head station) of an optical single-fiber ring and allows the connection of active and passive nodes to the optical single-fiber ring. Note that only one optical channel can be set to this mode per optical single-fiber ring. The line monitoring of the optical channel is activated. A break on the FO cable in the single-fiber ring is signaled by the system LED and signaling contact.
Ring (passive)
Use this mode to set up optical ring topologies. In this mode, the SIMATIC NET optical link module allows the connection of passive nodes to the optical single-fiber ring. The line monitoring of the optical channel is deactivated.
Inactive
In this mode, the optical channel is deactivated. Sending and receiving of the deactivated channel is disabled, line monitoring is deactivated. All non-connected optical channels must be switched to this mode so that the line monitoring does not signal an FO cable break.
Monitor
With the Monitor setting, the line monitoring of the optical channel can be deactivated regardless of the mode setting (Monitor=off). It is necessary to deactivate line monitoring when using OLM12M modules and OLM/P3 or OLM/P4 modules within an optical bus structure.

Notes on Safety
+ + + + + +
Use the SIMATIC NET OLM12M optical link module only as explained in this Description and Operating Manual.
Operate the optical link module only with a safety extra-low voltage complying with IEC 950/EN 60 950/VDE 0805 of maximum +32 V (typically +24 V).
Keep to the electrical limit values for connecting voltage to the signaling contact. The connected voltage must also be a safety extra-low voltage complying with IEC 950/EN 60 950/ VDE 0805.
Never connect the optical link module to a power supply of 110 V 240 V.
Select the location where the module is installed so that the climatic limit values in the technical data are adhered to.
+ + + +
Make sure that the optical link modules are adequately grounded by connecting the standard rail or mounting plate to local ground making low-resistance and low-inductance contact.
Only use LAN cables approved for PROFIBUS as the RS 485 LAN cable.
Make sure that the shield of the RS 485 LAN cable makes secure, large-area contact with the shield clip of the optical link module.

Starting Up
3 Select the network topology to suit your situation.
You then install and start up the optical link modules following the steps outlined below: Check and, if necessary, make the appropriate settings on the DIL switch: Set the OLM12M optical link module to the required transmission rate (default setting: 12 Mbps). Adapt the OLM12M optical link module to the required topology by setting the mode (default setting: Line). Activate a terminating resistor combination on channel 1 if the connecting cable between the OLM12M optical link module and the DTE is longer than 5 meters or if the OLM12M is the start or end of an RS 485 bus segment (default setting: terminating resistor combination deactivated).
Connect the optical LAN cables Assemble the optical link modules Connect the electrical RS 485 LAN cables Connect the power supply and the signaling contact

For a single-fiber ring topology, use an FO cable with connectors. Make sure that in each case an optical input is connected to an optical output (crossover connection). Make sure that the strain relief for the FO cable is adequate and do not exceed the minimum bending radii of the FO cable. Close unused fiber-optic sockets with the supplied dust caps. Extraneous light, particularly in brightly lit areas can cause disturbances on the network. Set all unused optical channels to the Inactive mode. Make sure that the length of the FO cable is within the limits set by the minimum and maximum lengths and that you use only the fiber types specified in Table 1 and in the technical data. Make sure that no dust can infiltrate optical components. Dust in optical components can make them unusable.

If all the LEDs indicate correct operation and there are still communications problems (for example acknowledgments missing, unexpected frames), check the monitoring times (for example the slot time) on the PROFIBUS nodes. For more detailed information, refer to the description of your PROFIBUS DTEs. In large PROFIBUS networks with numerous modules and long cables, the delay caused by network components and lines (transmission delay) must be taken into account when you set the monitoring times. To check this setting, you must calculate the transmission delay time (TTD): The transmission delay time is the maximum time that elapses when transferring a frame on the medium from the transmitter to the receiver.
27
6ZB55303AB000BA0/01
Note: If the configuration software you are using to configure your PROFIBUS network does not support the PROFIBUS parameter TTD, then increase the 2 x min. TSDR and max. TSDR by 2 x TTD (the reaction time of the responder is increased by the transmission delay time for the outward and inward path).
Indications for a long transmission time are as follows: 1. Long FO cables or copper cables High cascading depth of active components such as OLM12M Delay time of the FO cable and RS 485 cables The delay time is approximately 5 s per km of cable Converted to bit times, this produces the following: Transmission Rate in Kbps Delay Time in tBIT per km 0.94 2.50 7.50 60
Delay Times of FO and RS-485 LAN Cables To calculate the cable delay time, multiply the maximum cable length in kilometers with the delay time corresponding to the transmission rate from the table above. 2. Delay time of the optical link modules The delay per module is 4 bit times. The total delay is the number of modules through which a frame passes between the sender and receiver multiplied by 4 bit times. 3. Delay time of other active PROFIBUS network components Please check the product documentation for the delay time of other components. 4. Transmission Delay Time (TTD) The total transmission delay time is the sum of the values of 1., 2. and 3.

Simplex Connectors
Each optical link module (OLM) is shipped with eight simplex connectors. The simplex connectors can be fitted easily without special tools. Simplex connectors cannot be ordered separately.
Figure 27:
+ + +
The simplex connectors do not provide strain relief. If there is a longer section of cable free at the end of the cable, it is advisable to secure the cable mechanically as close as possible to the interface.
FO connectors are adversely affected by dirt and damage to the face of the cable.
The simplex connector can only be used with plastic fiber-optic cords with a diameter of 2.2 mm. Two simplex connectors can be assembled to create a duplex connector. This is advisable when using duplex cables in star and bus topologies.
Figure 28:
Duplex Connector Two simplex connectors can be assembled together to create a duplex connector. The back part of the connector is not folded back but rather both connectors are pressed together as shown in the figure. This type of assembly is preferable for bus and star optical networks compared with the separate installation of two simplex connectors. The following tools are required or recommended: Stripping pliers for inner conductors with 1mm A sharp knife A smooth flat working surface (approximately 10 cm x 10 cm) Clean, 600 grit abrasive paper Make sure that when you are removing the jacket from the plastic fiber-optic cord, neither the fiber nor the cladding are damaged.
32
6ZB55303AB000BA0/01
Remove at least 3 mm of the core jacket of the simplex cord using stripping pliers. Caution: The fiber must not be scratched.
Insert the fiber-optic cable as far as possible into the simplex connector.
Make sure that the fiber extends beyond the tip of the connector.
By closing and locking the rear part of the connector fix the simplex cord in the connector (press the two halves of the connector together firmly until the upper section locks into the lower section).
The length of the fiber extending beyond the tip of the connector should not be more than 1 mm to 1.5 mm (if necessary cut off excess fiber with scissors or a sharp knife).
Place the tip of the connector vertically above the 600 grit abrasive paper and rub the tip over the paper describing a figure of 8 until the tip is flush with the connector. The abrasive paper must lie on an even solid surface.
Grinding is completed as soon as the fiber no longer extends beyond the tip of the connector.
The connector and particularly the tip of the connector should then be cleaned with a cloth and a little alcohol. The job is done!
+ Caution:
If the fiber extends beyond the tip of the connector and the connector is inserted into the OLM12M, the transmit and receive elements in the OLM12M may be damaged.
