BUSY FURLOUGH It has been three months since we have sent out a an extended vacation!

newsletter and six months since we have sent out a

newsletter with personal news, so I'm going to make a newsletter first on my list of things to do today. The only problem is that so much has happened in so short of a time that I'm not quite sure where to begin. October and the first couple weeks of November
were hectic both at the office and at home as we

We are sorry that we weren't able to visit some of you. There just wasn't enough time to see everyone. We arrived in Chile at 7:30 Sunday evening the 6th of March and the girls had to be up at 6:30 the next
morning to start school. If we weren't able to visit

with you on this trip, we hope it will be possible on

our next furlough.

SUMMER TRAINING INSTITUTE

prepared to leave for the States. I had to finish teach ing my classes in the Institute, lay out my classes for the coming year, prepare my classes and sermon for the Missionary Convention and leave the work for the
"El Encuentro" course more or less laid out for the

three months period that I was going to be gone. We arrived in the States the night before the Mis sionary Convention began. It was not possible to go earlier since the girls were both still in school. The following three months were times of joy, happiness, weariness, and longing to return to our home in Chile.
We were thrilled to see our families and our friends

While we were in the States on furlough the second summer institute of leadership training was held in Chile. There were 59 students present for the three weeks period of study. The students started a church among the neighboring farm families in their spare time and are presently helping in the growth of the group by traveling each Sunday to the camp to teach
the new Christians.

who have supported our work with their prayers and finances. We were overjoyed to note a greater spirit ual hunger among our brothers and sisters in Christ in the States. We observed a greater spontaneity in wor ship and a closer fellowship in the churches because
of home Bible studies.

The 19th of March the fall semester of our Santiago Bible College began vidth 63 students enrolled, 25 in the second year class and 38 in the first year class. I continue to teach Christian Evidences to the first year
class and am teaching Hebrews to the second year

class. Pray for us as we try to better prepare these

students to be more fully used by the Lord.
NEW FAMILIES ARRIVE

Furlough is a time of mixed emotions involving a desire to continue in fellowship with those in the
States and a desire to return to the mission field.

During the first six weeks I was home for only eleven days. During one week I spoke 17 times. One night I finished speaking at Lincoln Christian College in Illi nois at 8:00 p.m., and had to be at Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn., at 8:30 a.m., the next day to speak four times during that day. That in cluded a 550 mile drive, a time change against us, and snow and ice part of the way. Furlough is more than

Five new families have arrived to work with us in

Chile after having completed language study in Costa Rica. They are Steve and Colleen Phillips, Jeff and Kathy Phillips, Woody and Nelda Phillips, Jim and Lynn Adams, and David and Rose Fish. We praise God that He has chosen to send more laborers to help
with the harvest in Chile.

While we were in the States we were thrilled to find

out that six families will be going to Argentina in December of 1978 to begin work in Buenos Aires. They will spend about three months in Santiago be fore going to Argentina to learn how to set up and use the Bible correspondence course for evangelism.
NEW CHURCHES

I have been working with Jeff Phillips and Jim Adams laying the ground work for four new churches

Christy and Brenda are now in school. Christy is counting the pages in her book until she learns how to write cursive style. Brenda is learning how to read, so it's exciting times for both of them. Sara taught the girls how to embroider this past weekend and they were both so excited about it that they wanted to take their handwork on a picnic.
Danny has been quite busy. We've had many weeks of beautiful weather since we got back, so Danny has been able to play outside almost every day. He took right up with the Chilean people. He would go with anyone just to be going somewhere. He is beginning to say a few words now. Sara has kept busy at home for these first few

in the Maipu and La Legua sections of Santiago. We

are using a new method to find who is interested in learning about Christ. In different sections of the city, fruit markets are set up on the streets where as many as 10,000 to 15,000 people pass each morning. The government has given us permission to set up distribu tion centers for our course in these markets through

We ask that you pray for this new avenue of work. We have already had some decisions and are going to begin church services this coming Sunday in one of
the areas.

It has only been five or six weeks since some of you have heard from us, but so much has happened since then that I decided I'd better write again. In our last newsletter we told you about our projected work in the open-fruit markets on the streets throughout Santiago. At the present time we are working in seven "ferias" as the markets are called. We have enrolled as many as 100 students in as little as one hour. At the present time there are approximately 1,500 new students in the course as a result of the feria work. The ferias have provided us with alot of good contacts for church estabhshment, since all of the students for any one feria generally
live within ten blocks of the market.
NEW CHURCH IN LA LEGUA

NINE NEW CHURCHES IN FIVE MONTHS

Since the first of January there have been five new churches established and four other indigenous
churches who have chosen to affiliate with our movement. The churches who have chosen to affiliate

with us are: 2 churches in Rancagua, one in Puerto Octay, and another in San Carlos. The new churches established this year are:

"El Tabo" at the camp "La Legua" Santiago "El Montijo" Santiago "La Castrina" Santiago "Concepcion" Concepcion God willing, the new church in Maipu, Santiago will be established within four weeks. We already

more because we ran out of lessons to give the students. An average of 45 people per minute were
passing our stand.

"La Legua" is a criminals hiding place with shootings and robberies being very common. The first day we set up our stand the police caught two thieves robbing a lady about 30 yards from us. They knocked one down with their billy-clubs, but the other took off running. They shot at him, but missed. While all this W2is going on we enrolled two more
students in the course. It was more unusual in that section of town to hear about Christ than to see a

Our work in the "ferias" is designed to open the doors of the students so we can go to their homes to teach them about Jesus with our five-week plan of evangelism. I have already finished teaching three

classes and as a result six new people have accepted Jesus. Two more should make their decisions today, as two of the seven classes I have on Tuesdays will finish their fifth week of classes. Last Sunday 19
people graduated from the "El Encuentro" course in the feria in "La Legua". Only three were members of any church. Out of the rest we were able to set up nine classes, five with complete families. Over 50 people are presently participating in the classes I'm teaching. I think most of these wi)l accept Jesus as
their Saviour.

We started working in "La Legua" because we felt the need to start a church in that area. We asked you to pray for the beginning of a new church there and now we can thank you for doing so. The "La Legua" church was begun three weeks ago. Last Sunday we had 40 present for the services in the home of one of
the new Christians.

I've been taking Jeff Phillips and Jim Adams and four Chilean men calling with me on different days. Jeff and one of the Chilean men will start calling on their own this week and I'll take Woody and Steve Phillips calling with me so they, also, can observe how the classes are taught. All this has really kept me busy. On Tuesday through Thursday's I work from 9:00 a.m to 11:00 p.m. with only a break at noon to grab a sandwich. With all the work that built up while I was gone I wasn't able to take a day off in the past eight weeks, but am now able to take off a day each

me.

SICKNESS

The bug has struck again! Shortly after arriving in Chile in 1970, I spent five weeks in bed with typhoid fever. Needless to say it took me quite awhile to recover my strength. Our second term I had constant trouble with amoebic dysentery. Finally after two years I got that problem cleared up. Now to begin our third term in Chile the bug has struck again. This time it was hepatitis. I was hoping to get by with three or four weeks in bed, but since it was a heavy case, it ended up being seven weeks in bed and then a gradual build up to my normal work schedule over a period of a couple of months. I had been hoping that this week would be my last visit to the doctor. I think I have been paying his entire salary since I got sick. Chilean doctors are charg ing $35 per visit for house calls now.

limited because of the small house that we are meeting in. I am hoping that possibly I will be able to help them buy a property this next month so that they can build a larger meeting area. We were set back about three months in our work in that area because of my sick
ness.

In our last newsletter I mentioned the possibility of establishing a new church in Maipu. That church was established before I became sick. Jim Adams, one of the
new missionaries, will continue to work with that new

church. Jim also continues to work with a new group I started in Diego Silva in the north part of town. There are about 1,500,000 people who Uve in that section of town and this will possibly be our first church in the area. Five were baptized the week before I was confined to bed. I am not sure if they have had other baptisms since Jim took over the group or not. Keep "Diego Silva" in your prayers.
THANKS FOR SUPPORT

CHURCH WORK

My work will be rather limited until March because of my limited hours of work. The doctor said I should limit my time out at night and that is the best time for classes. I am also directing our summer leadership training program in February, and have had to put in quite a bit of time in preparation for that work. We con fide, however, that the seeds that we continue to sow in the hearts of Chileans will produce much fruit, for the soil is productive and God is faithful in giving the in
crease.

We always thank God for the supporting churches that have sent us to Chile. We thank you for your sup port, and even more, we thank you for your prayers for us. God bless each of you.
A BUSY WIFE

The work continues to progress. This past Sunday we had over 50 in San Joaquin. They only have seating for 45. The rest have to stand. Last month they bought all the bricks, sand, gravel and cement to put the walls for an addition that will give them room for 100 people. They are hoping to reach that number by the end of the
year.

I started to write a newsletter when Ed got sick, but I knew that I'd leave out alot of important news about the work, so decided to just wait until Ed could write that part. In June I went to Osorno (a city in the south) with three other missionary women and around 12 Chileans for a women's clinic. It was really a blessing. We left around 6 p.m. and rode the train all night to get there.
We arrived around 10:30 a.m. and rode in the back of a

off to the slaughtering house and we were so tired that we were giddy like kids.) The classes began that after noon. Mine were on the family life. I really feel this is
an area here which is often overlooked and really en joyed being able to share in this area. The first night we were there the preacher's wife went to the hospital to have their first baby which was

a lot of reading material to pass the time and got caught up on some of his office work. I am presently teaching a women's class in La Legua.
It's a small group, but I've learned a lot from it. There are so many opportimities here for teaching, but with small children my time away from them is very limited. The girls are already looking forward to their simimer vacation in December. (Once nice weather gets here they think the summer vacation is just around the corner.) Danny has changed a lot since we were home. He tries to copy everything the girls do. Last Wednesday Debbie Silverberg arrived. She will be living with us and the girls are thrilled to have a new sister. They couldn't decide whether she would be their aunt or their sister, as they didn't want to make me feel real old. She lived with us before when she was here, so it's just like coming back home. While Ed was in bed I was going to get brave and start JhdidngJmt-oneLofjthejQtheiLinissimiariesJiQrnMKfid-our

and then went back to the house for a few winks before

the next day's sessions began. It was a new experience for all of us, but it was so neat, as the people in the south were sort of afraid of us, since they thought we were so rich, etc. They had the idea that we wo\ildn't want to stay in their poor houses. It was really a challenge to break down these barriers
and show them that we are all the same.

When I got home on Sunday Ed was really sick. We t.hniigbt hp.had the flu, but by WftdnpsHfly T insisted that he go to the doctor and he didn't object, as he felt so bad. As most of you know by now he was confined to the bed for 7 weeks. (That almost broke his heart, but not as much as the stiff diet he was put on.) He is now able to work in the mornings, but will have to continue his

I'll try to sneak some space in the future newsletters to let you know about the family. It's been fun writing to you this time. We want to thank you all for the letters and cards while Ed was sick. I haven't yet started to answer them, but will try to soon. (It was a full-time job being mother, nurse, cook and housekeeper.)
