Two large national companies in the electronic industry dier in the proportion of women in their work force. The rst company has 30% women in their work force and the second company has 18% women in their work force. Randomly selected groups of 80 workers from the rst company and 70 workers from the second company were chosen to attend a training program. Find the probability that (a) The sample proportion of women workers from the rst company is greater than the sample proportion of women workers from the second company. [6 marks] (b) The proportion of women workers from the rst company exceeds the proportion of women workers from the second company by at most 6%. [3 marks] (c) The sample proportion of women workers dier by at least 5%. [3 marks]

(a) The life in hours of a biomedical device under development in the laboratory is known to be approximately normally distributed. A random sample of 32 devices is selected and the average life and variance was found to be 5625.1 hours and 50625 hours2 , respectively. Construct a 90% condence interval for the true mean. [5 marks] (b) The percentage of titanium in an alloy used in aerospace castings is measured in 51 randomly selected components. The mean and standard deviation was found to be 25 and 0.37, respectively. Construct a 95% condence interval for the standard deviation. Assume that the percentage of titanium is normally distributed. [5 marks]

(a) A semiconductor manufacturer produces controllers used in automobile engine applications. The customer required that the fraction of defectives at a critical manufacturing step to be less than 0.05. If so, the manufacturer successfully demonstrate process capability. The semiconductor manufacturer takes a random sample of 200 devices and nds that four of them are defective. Can the 2

manufacturer demonstrate process capability for the customer? Assume sample are taken from a normal distribution. Use = 0.05. [5 marks] (b) Two dierent types of injection-moulding machines are used to form plastic parts. A part is considered defective if it has excessive shrinkage or is discolored. Two random sample each of size 300, are selected, and 15 defective parts are found in the sample from machine 1 while 9 defective parts are found in the sample from machine 2. Is it reasonable to conclude that both machines produce the same fraction of defective parts, using = 0.01? Assume data are taken from normal distribution. [7 marks]

4.

An automated lling machine is used to ll plastic cups at McDaud restaurant with McFlurrie ice-cream. A random sample of 10 lled plastic cups were taken and the volume are as follows, in uid ounces (. oz). 12.00 11.85 12.01 12.01 12.00 11.99 11.99 12.05 11.89 11.58

If the variance of ll volume exceeds 0.01 . oz, the machine must be reset. (a) Is there evidence in the sample data to suggest that McDaud has a problem with the lling machine? Use = 0.05 and assume that the ll volume follow normal distribution. [7 marks] (b) If = 0.01, will you change the conclusions you have made in (a)? [1 marks]

A researcher wants to determine whether the number of minutes adults spend online per day is related to gender. A random sample of 450 adults is selected and the results are shown in the following table. At = 0.05, is there enough evidence to conclude that the number of minutes spent online per day is related to gender? [8 marks] Minutes Spent Online per Day Gender 0 30 30 60 More than 60 Male 19 36 75 Female 23 72 45

A university employment ocer wants to compare the length of time for graduates to obtain their rst job after graduation. The following table lists the time (in days) taken for students from three dierent majors to obtain their rst full time job after graduation in 2005. Engineering Management Computer Science 36 56 26 63 13 50 34 24 62 80 28 46 48 44 78 26 47 34 44 20 75 Perform the analysis of variance to test whether there is signicant dierence in the mean time (in days) for students from three dierent majors to obtain their rst job after graduation at 5% level of signicance. [10 marks]

The electric power (y) consumed each month by a chemical plant is thought to be related to the amount (in tons) of product produced (x). The past years historical data are available and presented in the following table: Electric Power Consumed (y) 240 236 290 274 301 316 300 276 288 261 296 267 Product Produced (x) 100 95 110 88 94 99 97 105 100 98 96 110

(a) Obtain a simple linear regression of electric power consumed on product produced, y = + x for the above data. [2 marks] 4

(b) Estimate the amount of electric power consumed if the amount of product produced is 91 tons. [1 marks] (c) State the assumptions made when testing model parameter . [3 marks]

(d) Do the data support the existence of a linear relationship between electric power consumed and the amount of product produced? Test at 5% level of signicance. [8 marks] (e) Find the Pearson correlation coecient. Interpret the strength of the relationship between electric power consumed and the amount of product produced. [2 marks]

(a) In a study of compressive strength, a total of 10 concrete bricks are sampled at random from a population. For each brick, the compressive strength found at the top and the bottom of the concrete are recorded as follows: Concrete 1 2 3 4 5 Top 51 53 49 46 50 Bottom 46 45 45 47 49 6 7 8 9 10 51 52 53 51 50 44 47 48 52 52
