Building Core Business Strengths

Governing Change for Lawyers

Governing Change is one of the most comprehensive management development

programs available and one of the few that delivers consistent, measurable
results way beyond usual training. For many, it becomes their career reference
for managing people at every level of a firm.

Governing Change is based upon timeless principles, basic psychology and

expert facilitation. There is synergy with every day and every idea on the
program. There is a thread that runs through each day that continues to make
connections over the course of 6 months. The result is a set of practical tools and
ideas that become a natural source for ongoing management decision-making.

Sound management of intellectual capital contributes to a secure future and

greater profits. Governing Change helps balance the requirements of the practice
of law with the needs of those performing work on client matters.

This series of six seminars over the course of six months develops people
capability; extends the meaning of service; grows understanding of quality and
sustains reputation.

• Seminar 1 Imperatives for Every Business

Seminar 1 - Imperatives for Every Business

The objective of this seminar is to benchmark where your organization stands in

relation to key and fundamental ideas that underpin success and results in
business. When they are in place the business will be able to release more of its’
potential.

Each idea operates at three levels: Personal; Team and Strategic. You will see
the connection between how an individual operates; how team performance
improves and the impact the shared idea has on the ability of an organization to
carry out its strategy. There is a clear connection with turning values into action
throughout the business.

This seminar is the foundation for all future exploration on the “Governing
Change” program. The reason things go wrong in business can always be traced
back to an absence of one or more simple, yet vital, fundamentals.

The themes and ideas on each day are mostly known, not widely understood.
When you close the gap between knowledge and understanding it is possible to
effect change more powerfully and with more security. The program makes
connections where none existed, enabling new decisions and approaches.

Agenda

• The Purpose of Management

• Overall Responsibility of Leaders
• Learning in Business
• Imperatives for Success
• Managing Business Relationships
• Quality in Communication
• Mobilizing and Motivating People
• Managing Prejudice
• The Strategic Role of Questions
• Laws of Influence
• Personal Impact

There is a month in between each seminar in which to assimilate the content of

the day and to apply simple, easy-to-use, ideas back in the workplace. By
applying the ideas you will create new results that will inform all your future
decision-making.

Seminar 2 - Engagement – Corporate, Team & Personal

The objective of this seminar is to explore increasing the level of engagement

people have with their work and their company. The greater their connection with
the business, the more security there will be in the results.

The theme running through the day is challenging existing thinking and releasing
huge untapped potential in creativity and motivation. When people feel that they
are part of something, their level of commitment and willingness to respond is
enormous.

The day explores the practical side of engaging people more fully through
feedback, involvement and alignment with strategy.

Throughout the program work is done to develop our own personal influence.
This day also incorporates the way in which we deal with criticism, expectations
not being met and how we conduct ourselves in a conflict situation. This aspect
of personal engagement, especially at senior levels of an organization, strongly
influences creativity and flexibility throughout a business.

Agenda

• Connecting with an audience

• Creativity as an active strategy
• Releasing creativity in people
• Dealing with unexpected negativity
• Maintaining stature under difficult circumstances
• Praise & Recognition
• The Strategic Importance of Appraisal
• Running an Executive appraisal
• Sources of motivation in appraisal
• Improving under-performance
• Managing one’s own development

You are now tasked with putting into practice the ideas and solutions from this
seminar. The key areas under evaluation are releasing more creativity
throughout the business; looking for more impact from appraisal and generating
higher levels of confidence and commitment through your feedback.

Seminar 3 - Create an Environment where People can Excel

The focus for the third seminar is Leadership. It explores the way in which
leadership becomes recognizable, day-to-day, at every level of an organization.
A large part of your role revolves around creating an environment where others
can excel. The seminar covers practical areas that help achieve this.

The 4 Principles of Leadership provide the backcloth for the content on this day.
These principles are timeless. You can find reference to them in books dating
back centuries. The challenge when referencing principles and values is, always,
turning them into action.

We explore archetypal business situations that put our leadership to the test and
that allow us to demonstrate those leadership principles. Every successful
organization needs leaders at every level. This seminar shows how leaders act
and where others around you can improve.

A clear picture emerges of where the business can strengthen its leadership
impact.

Agenda

• Defining Leadership
• Inspiring Confidence
• The 4 Principles of Leadership
• Understanding personal drivers
• Setting clear direction
• Communicating decisions
• Handling Errors
• Being visible as a leader
• Meeting Culture
• Improving meeting productivity
• Leaders as a catalyst for ideas

As a result of this seminar you will come away with a clear picture of where your
firm can benefit by applying more consciously the 4 Principles of Leadership. You
will strongly distinguish between management behavior and leadership behavior,
allowing you to ask for more from your people. By applying ideas from this
seminar it is possible to reduce meeting time over a year by up to 25%.

Seminar 4 – Influence

Influence is the quality all leaders and managers need to cultivate above others.
The great industrialist, Rockefeller, once said “I would pay someone ten times
the salary if they can influence people who are cleverer than they are.”

Entering the second half of the program we start to focus more on managing
attitude. Seminar 4 explores the challenges associated with influencing
performance improvement and also maintaining focus and commitment when
you have to disappoint someone.

The day also explores our ability to influence those over whom we have no
authority. We test our ability to be persuasive with customers and convincing to
our superiors.

One way of measuring our effectiveness in business is to consider the quality of

the relationships we have in 4 directions; up, down, sideways internally and
externally. Seminar 4 provides valuable ideas and approaches to strengthening
those relationships.

Agenda

• Increasing the quality of personal influence - managing action and results

• Controlling Interpretations
• Influence – conscious and sub-conscious
• Positive confrontation - setting out new expectations for performance
• Saying ‘No’
• Establishing corporate values
• Influencing other people’s decisions
• Selling change
• Managing the relationship upwards, to shareholders and superiors

The practical ideas from this seminar are geared to generating a shift or change
in others. Realigning performance, persuading individuals or groups to a new
course of action and gaining buy-in from above, are the key areas to work on.
The personal insights taken from this day are connected to the strategic compass
of a business, such as, results and values-driven, future oriented, solutions
based.

Seminar 5 – Governing Change

The ultimate, overall responsibility specific to managers is to ‘Govern Change’.

Governing change is stronger than ‘managing change’ in that it demands that we
are pro-active by seeking new solutions rather than being reactive and looking for
how things have been handled in the past.

The seminar explores the characteristics of a responsive organization and how it

deals with barriers and impediments to progress. It investigates the attitudes
necessary to overcome resistance to change as well as approaches to building
flexibility and responsiveness through people.

The day also explores key areas that test our own ability to be flexible and
secure positive results. Preparing the business for future challenges comes
under review through a comprehensive examination of the recruitment process
and sound interviewing skills.

Agenda

• Reporting back on the results from the previous month - final analysis of form
and content
• Overcoming resistance to change
• The use of 'principles' in negotiation
• Negotiating change
• Searching for a common goal
• Analysis of personal thoughts and ideas concerning the broader implications
of sound management
• Determining the long term value of people assets - governing principles
• Setting out long term recruitment plans - understanding long term demand
• Recruiting, designing future capability, succession management
• Developing an ethos around the recruitment process

From a personal development perspective the seminar leaves individuals with

practical tools and ideas that develop their negotiation skills and raise their
awareness of how to speed up the process as well as generate satisfactory
outcomes on both sides. Delegates will also have a far deeper appreciation of
the role of recruitment and their part in securing the right people through more
sophisticated interviewing. The agenda connects practical application of the
ideas with the strategic imperatives of responsiveness and the need to govern
change.

Seminar 6 – Managing the Future

What you do today will influence tomorrow. Managing the future is determined by
how we are managing ourselves, our people and our organization, in the present.
By creating the right environment, growing a strong organizational culture and
exhibiting positive leadership, it is possible to spend more time looking forwards
than down or backwards.

On this final day we explore the root of attitudes that hold people and businesses
back. We examine approaches to releasing people from the past and managing
their fear of the future. At the heart of this study lies the key to generating an
open, future-oriented culture.

The seminar brings together all the elements of this development program and
establishes the overarching strategic context for everything covered in the
syllabus. It underlines the impact good management practice can have on results
and reputation. The biggest impact is that people will know how they generated
their success.

Agenda

• The impact of Passive compared to Active thinking, decisions and behavior

• The role of leaders as educators
• Self control - managing attitudes
• Generating a culture of ‘Yes…and’ rather than ‘Yes…but’
• The Seven Elements of Effective Motivation
• The relationship between strategy, structure and culture
• Understanding the role of the past in future management
• Presentation, review and analysis of overall results achieved
• Decisions for continuing learning and development

The delegates will leave with one of the most comprehensive frameworks for
good management practice available. They will understand more about
communication and influence than 90% of the population. Their growth in
understanding will be evident in the changes to their behavior, their interaction
with people and their results. They will share a common language and approach
that will be visible to the rest of the organization and, finally, they will release
untapped potential in their people.
