have begin to rent in Norley, so their children can attend the school. Another she knows of is looking to buy. The success of the school and the village are completely intertwined. While there is opposition to new housing in Norley in some quarters for instance, there is no doubt the school could benefit. The children have been helping Governor Joy Rutherford by giving their opinions as part of the Neighbourhood Plan process. Helen welcomes this, not least as the views of young people the future inhabitants of Norley perhaps are often very different to those of their parents. Helen is proud of the excellent record of the school in academic, sporting and nurturing terms. She hopes to build further this reputation, so she never hears again the question Norley, wheres that? As we spoke, musical rehearsals were underway for a planned celebration of the childrens talents. There is also thriving before and after school club. There are challenges of course. The building is just about big enough for its purposes it has a capacity of 105 children, but this does not allow enough room for staff facilities for example currently the Heads office is also the staff room, and the useful spare classroom is now in use. Helen is looking to fund improvements to the building. The first port of call for funds is the Diocese, but she is clear that it may be necessary to look elsewhere. The Norley News is certain that, should it prove necessary, the people of the village will continue to value their school enough to vigorously support it.

Meet Helen Kelly, the new Head Teacher at Norley Primary School. Helen has worked at the school as a teacher since 2007, and had been acting Head since Anne Griffiths left to go to Sutton Green School in January this year. Helen has been teaching since 1997. She started her career in Widnes, where she taught at two schools. The Head of the second recognised her potential. and her need for a new challenge. This made her scout out new opportunities, leading to her joining the staff of Norley. As soon as I walked into the school I knew this was the job for me. she says. Nevertheless the role was initially daunting she was the first new teacher Norley had had for a long time, and she was worried her ideas might meet opposition. She neednt have worried though. She and her ideas were warmly welcomed by staff and parents. So how does she feel about her new role? Its exciting. Its great to be a part of the leadership team for the school. The time I spent as acting Head gave me the taste for the role, and I am vey clear now this has been the right career move for me. Helen continues, as well as being Head Teacher, to teach part time too. She thinks that is important continuity for the children, and of course she enjoys it! While it has faced challenges in the past, Norley School is doing well. It currently has 82 pupils, up from a low of about 60. It is likely to see a further slight increase next year. It has an ever widening catchment area, and Helen feels it is valued for its approach, which she describes as a mix of Christian, family, and nurturing. People are choosing the school as soon as they walk through the doors she says. There is one family she knows of how

Mrs Eaton and has benefitted greatly from her expertise. During her time at Norley she has stepped up as Acting head teacher and has been through a number of very successful Ofsted inspections. On more than one occasion she has taught 3 age groups together and provided a rich and varied curriculum for all the children. Mrs Eaton has seen lots of changes but has remained the stable influence during these times. Mrs Eaton has worked tirelessly for the children of Norley CE Primary School; often she was the first in the morning and the last to leave at night. She is going to leave us with some fantastic memories and Im sure she wont become a stranger. On behalf of the staff and children at Norley CE Primary School I would like to wish Mrs Eaton a happy retirement-she deserves it after teaching for so long. I know Mrs Eaton will have a busy retirement with her running, climbing and golf. She also has 2 grandsons and another grandchild imminent. A simple 'thank you' doesnt seem enough for someone that has been such a big part of the school for so long. We will be celebrating Mrs Eatons time at our school on 18th July at 2.00pm and would like past pupils and their parents to join us for this occasion. The children have prepared their own thank you messages and memories to share.

An Inspector Calls
By Phil Gifford - a Norley Beekeeper Bees in peril! whether its solitary, bumble or honey, bees have been much in the news. The catastrophe that awaits if these vital pollinators continue to decline seems to have finally sunk in. Whether it results in the necessary action on our part is less certain. As for my bees it seemed touch and go for a time, I lost half of my colonies, the late cold wet spring plus dratted mice proving too much. But the remainder are thriving, so it was with some trepidation that I got a call from Sandra, a Seasonal Bee Inspector from the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) Id like to look at your bees, there are some hotspots of EFB around, is tomorrow about 11/12midday OK? No problem I replied sounding deceptively nonchalant Ill put the kettle on. To explain EFB (European Foul Brood) is a bacterial disease of the honey bees larvae (brood). The bug develops in the larval gut starving the host of food. The body twists and contorts eventually proving fatal. The house bees often throw the corpse out or it decomposes into a brown gloopy mess helping to spread the infection For those of you that watch Country file you will recall Adams agonising wait following the tests for TB and the eventual destruction of his prize bull because of it. Likewise a severe outbreak of EFB can only be dealt with by destruction of the affected colonies All the frames of dead bees are burnt, only the hives charred dark brown with a blow-torch being allowed to remain. So even though I was pretty sure my bees were free of EFB you can never be 100% certain. It was therefore with some anxiety that I set off with Sandra in her van to check the outapiary in Cuddington. Sandra efficiently smoked and opened a hive looked at the brood and checked the front of the hive for corpses, no EFB here - phew! Back home, more hives were duly smoked and inspected, useful, advice and tips along the way being exchanged
(mostly admittedly from Sandra). Verdict - very nice bees and no sign of EFB. Oh she said, Before I go here is what the larvae of the Small hive beetle look like and these are the adults. A brief description followed of its life cycle and the devastation they will cause if (or rather when) they arrive in the UK. Mind you she said, Weve being looking at the problem pretty intensively and we think we can beat it but it will take some effort of beekeepers for the control measures to work effectively Apart from relief, my verdict on the day was that the work of the Inspectors is absolutely essential in the never ending battle to save our honey bees. I dont know if the proposed cuts will involve hard working dedicated people like Sandra. For all our sakes I hope not. If the Inspectors are axed rather than increased in number as they ought to be, then its another nail in the planets (including that of Homo sapiens sapiens) coffin. I noted swarm cells during the inspection of one of the colonies, so the next day I attempted to divide it up to thwart the swarming impulse. The very nice bees the day before decided to be not as nice and I got more stings in that hour or so than Ive had in the past 10 years. So Ive splashed out (42-50p) on a nice gentle Italian Queen (Apis mellifera ligustica) from New Zealand sent by post via Hastings! This will at least improve the temper of the bees near my neighbours.
On the honey front I hope to have some in the Stores soon (The Lime trees in School Lane are about to flower). There will be some on sale at the Garden Show in September, as will dubbin, furniture cream, fudge and other hive products. (usually in the Stores too)

flight jitters, jet lag, or sunburnand will not conflict with conventional treatments for more serious emergencies such as sunstroke. These remedies are inexpensive and small enough to take anywhere. They are dissolved in the mouth (not swallowed). Based on the principle that like treats like, remedies are chosen according to their similarity to symptoms. The closer the remedy matches, the better the results achieved. Travel anxiety and fear Many travellers experience anxiety about flying. When you feel anxiety before travel, Gelsemium 30c, Argentum nitricum30c and Aconite 30c are helpful. Jet lag Jet lag occurs when your body is moved quickly from the electromagnetic environment to which its meridians have acclimated and into a time zone that is not in phase with them. A quick and effective way avoid jet lag is to tap specific acupuncture points associated with the time in your current and destination locations alternately. This re-sets your body clock to the time in your new location. Contact me if you would like information on these accupunture points..
On the flight do the Three Thumps (see NN March edition or my website) every couple of hours which will help your immune system, protecting you against airbourne germs on the plane. It is advisable to drink plenty of water, refrain from or minimise alcohol and eat lightly. Motion sickness Common and much dreaded, motion sickness can strike in a car, plane, boat, or other mode of transport. Children 3 to 12 years of age are often susceptible. Remedies are Cocculus 30c, Tabacum 30c, Nux vomica 30c Travellers diarrhoea Travellers diarrhoea can strike at any time. When the water is not safe, drink only bottled water, eat only well cooked food and fruit you can peel, avoid ice in drinks. If you do get diarrhoea the following may help: Arsenicum album 30c, Podophyllum 30c, Veratrum album 30c
Sunburn Sunburn is possible anywhere the sun shines. Avoid the midday sun and use a natural sunscreen. If you do get burnt, try one of these. Mild sunburn - Calendula spray, gel, or cream Mild sunburn with itching - Urtica urens 30c Painful sunburn, possible blistering - Cantharis 30c Sunstroke True sunstroke is a medical emergency. Children and the elderly are most susceptible. Seek immediate medical attention, meanwhile try Belladonna 30c. Symptoms can include bursting, throbbing headache; fever; hot. Bumps, Bruises & Sore Muscles - Arnica 30 For dosage information, see full information sheet on my website As your symptoms improve, space out the doses and stop when feeling a lot better. The healing process should continue. If symptoms return then re-start taking the remedy. tel: 077321 44427 email: safiya@sorayahealth.co.uk web: www.sorayahealth.co.uk

August Recipe
This month, Dave and Mary from The Stores are keen to shout about their great selection of fresh British fruit. I was spoilt for choice! - raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, the list is endless complimented by seasonal fresh peaches (including delicious donut peaches) and nectarines, Try this simple dessert, not too many ingredients and relatively easy to make, it is really like a rolled up pavlova. There are so many flavour combinations possible; I have added another couple of favourites at the end of the recipe.
parchment. Lightly whip the cream to soft peaks and spread over the meringue, leaving a border of about 2.5cm on the long side furthest away. Scatter the raspberries and peaches evenly over the cream, then carefully roll up. Place the roulade on a serving plate, join-side down. Carefully slice into portions, served with extra fruit and a drizzle of raspberry sauce. Alternatives Zesty Lemon Filling Whisk 125g lemon curd with a 284ml pot double cream and the finely grated zest of 1 lemon. Spread over the roulade and roll up. Peach and Amaretto Filling Whisk a 284ml pot of double cream with 2tbsp Amaretto liqueur. Fold in the chopped flesh of 2 peaches. Spread over the roulade and roll up.

Method Preheat the oven to 150C, gas mark 2. Line a 33x28cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment, leaving a 5cm border. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then gradually whisk in the caster sugar, until the meringue mixture is stiff and glossy. Whisk in the cornflour. Turn the mixture into the prepared Swiss roll tin using a palette knife or spatula and spread it evenly to the edges. If you would like a pink swirl effect dip a skewer into the food colouring and swirl through the meringue base. Bake for 1 hour, then leave in the tin to cool. Turn the meringue out onto a sheet of greaseproof paper sprinkled with sieved icing sugar and peel off the baking
Tri-Golf Competitions
On Thursday 20th June a team of 8 boys and girls from year 5 and 6 went to Helsby Golf Club for a Tri-golf competition against nine other Cheshire Schools. Our team was lucky to have some very good golfers and it soon became apparent that their skills were helping us to score many points. The competition consisted of eight different events comprising of both putting and chipping. At the end of the competition, the scores were added up and Norley had beaten the other schools by 700 points. Each child was given a gold medal to bring back to school. Well done Team Norley!! On Friday 21st June it was the turn of the younger children when a team of 10 year 3 and 4 boys and girls also went to Helsby Golf Club to take part in a competition again against nine other schools. Some of this team had played very little golf but they all enjoyed trying to score, whether putting or chipping. After the eight events the Norley team were told they had come fifth, a good position for their first competition.
the team that won the competition were lucky to have some County players among them! Here are some quotes from members of the team: It was an amazing afternoon! It was hard playing the final match but we kept our heads up and battled to the end.

In early June, I reported a burglary at The Quay in Frodsham. I am pleased to be able to inform you that the offender was arrested and has been remanded in custody for the offence. The most significant piece of news across the whole NPU area is that on Monday and Tuesday, (10 & 11 June) there was a spate of daytime burglaries committed, mainly in isolated rural locations. Offences have been committed in Norley, Beeston, Harthill, Broxton and Tiverton. We believe that these offences will be committed by the same individual/ s. The spread of offences suggests that the offender has access to a vehicle. Due to the nature of the property stolen, it is possible that the offender may park any vehicle away from the address. Could I urge all readers to be extra vigilant and to report any suspicious persons or vehicles straight away, as it is likely that the offender will commit further offences until caught? There have been a small number of reports across the area of fake 20 notes being passed to retailers. Although the number of reports is small, there is an increase to the normal level of such reports. If you regularly deal in cash, please take extra precautions to ensure the validity of notes passed. I would like to take this opportunity to flag up to parents, the importance of monitoring your childrens internet use, particularly their use of chat rooms and social networking sites. Teenagers tend to be very trusting and take at face value what other users say in their conversations the medium of the internet appearing to add credibility to what is typed. I
regularly see reports of unknown persons passing themselves off as someone else in order to build a relationship, which they then use to their own advantage, and often to the disadvantage or danger to those innocent youths, who have engaged with them. Please make sure that your children are not interacting with anyone who they do not physically know, and challenge them if you are unsure. On Monday night (17 Jun), somebody heard prowlers in the Norley area and contacted the police. They kept the control room operator updated with the movements of the two prowlers who were subsequently arrested for trying to steal a caravan. I reported that there had been a number of daytime burglaries reported at isolated rural addresses. There have been further reports, one from the Tilston area, one in Kelsall and one in Tarporley. Please be aware of this current problem which is receiving close police attention and ensure that your address is secure and that you look out for your neighbours. I would like to remind drivers, particularly in rural areas to always drive at a speed where you can safely stop within the distance you can see to be clear the quiet roads and familiarity often breeds complacency. The high winds early this week brought a large number of trees down across roads. Just think if you could stop if a tree was down just around the next bend? The spate of daytime burglaries of houses in isolated locations is continuing, with offences occurring on Monday in Tarvin Road, Littleton (3 males were disturbed and made off in a grey Audi A3 which was possibly a stolen vehicle), on Tuesday in Barton Road, Farndon and on Friday in Rake Lane, Little Stanney. Please look out for any suspicious

people who appear to be watching addresses in your locality and report the behaviour straight away. Also, make sure that your house is properly secure dont leave windows open, even on those occasional hot days! It has been brought to the attention of Trading Standards that a company is cold calling residents offering wills and providing potentially misleading advice on how to avoid care home charges. We are concerned that residents may be being misled into purchasing services which are not fit for purpose. The company concerned creates a Lifetime or Family Trust to which you transfer the ownership of your home with the intention that should you need to go into care in the future, your home cannot be sold to pay for those costs. Please be extremely cautious as you may find that your property is still at risk to the problem the trust is supposed to guard against.
If you receive an unsolicited call from someone offering this service our advice would be to hang up and then report the call to Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 04 05 06 Please note that new rules mean that you can be penalised if you deliberately try to avoid care costs. We would always advise residents to contact their own local authority for information on what is the councils policy regarding residential and nursing care costs. If you need advice about care home charges contact your local council:

Ingredients:
4 large eggs 100g ( 4oz ) caster sugar 100g ( 4oz ) self raising flour
Method:
Grease and line tin with baking parchment. Whisk eggs & sugar together in a large bowl until the mixture is light and frothy, and the whisk leaves a trail when lifted out. Sift flour in, carefully folding it in at the same time. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and give a gentle shake so it finds its own level, making sure it spreads evenly into the corners. Bake for about 10mins in a preheated oven, or until the sponge is golden and begins to shrink from edges of tin. Cut a piece of baking parchment a little bigger than tin and sprinkle with caster sugar Invert the cake onto the parchment, and quickly loosen and remove the paper from the bottom of the cake. Trim the edges of the sponge and with a sharp knife make a score mark 1 in from shorter edge of cake, dont cut through. Leave to cool slightly, spread with jam, if the cake is too hot the jam will sink into sponge. Roll up the cake firmly from the cut end.
