NAME: Generic: doxorubicin hydrochloride Brand name: Adriamycin Classification: antineoplastics Mode of Administration: Route: IVTT Dosage: 25mg/ml Time: OD DRUG ACTION: Mechanism of Action: Inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis by forming a complex with DNA; action is cell-cycle S-phase specific. Also has immunosuppressive properties. SIDE EFFECT: Diarrhea Esophagitis Nausea Vomiting Stomatitis CONTRAINDICATION: Contraindicated in: Hypersensitivity; Pregnancy or lactation. NSG. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Check for doctors order. R: To be assure that you are giving the right medication and dose to the right patient. 2. Verify the patient and explain the action of the drug. R: To check the right patient and so that the patient will be aware by explaining the action of the drug. 3. Observe for 10 rights in preparing and administering of drug. R: To prevent error. 4. Stay on the patient side and observe for any untoward effects.

Special Precaution: Use cautiously in: History of cardiac disease or high cumulative doses of anthracyclines; Depressed bone marrow reserve; Liver impairment; Children, geriatric patients, mediastinal radiation, concurrent cyclophosphamide; Patients with childbearing potential.

Indication: Alone or with other modalities in the treatment of various solid tumors including: Breast, Ovarian, Bladder, Bronchogenic carcinoma, Malignant lymphomas, and leukemias.

Drug Interaction: Drug-Drug: Increase bone marrow depression with other antineoplastics or radiation therapy.

R: For immediate nursing care. 5. Perform hand washing before giving the medication. R: To prevent transmission of microorganism. 6. Advise the patient to eat dry crackers. R: To prevent nausea and vomiting. 7. Instruct patient to use soft toothbrush if stomatitis will occur. R: To prevent pain and lesion during brushing of teeth. 8. Offer attractive foods to the patient. R: To prevent anorexia. 9. Encourage the patient to stay in bed and limit activities when dizziness will occur. R: To prevent any accident. 10. Encourage the patient to take foods rich in potassium such as bananas and apple. R: to prevent

dehydration when diarrhea will occur.
