Trigonometry and Probability/Statistics Syllabus

Natalie Cochran 2014 nncochran@access.k12.wv.us H107 2013Room

Course Description This course is designed for students who intend to further study math and science and provides an excellent preparation for calculus. The trigonometry portion of the year focuses on trigonometric functions, identities, properties, and graphs. Probability and Statistics is one of the most important branches of the mathematical sciences. Knowledge of these topics is critical to decision-making and to the analysis of data. While studying probability and statistics, connections between content and applications to the real-world will be emphasized. Textbook Trigonometry (Larson, Hostetler, Seventh Edition) and Elementary Statistics (Larson, Farber. Fourth Edition) Expected Behaviors 1. Come to class on time and be prepared to work 2. Do not disrupt the learning process for yourself or for anyone else 3. Respect all property (school property and personal property) 4. Follow all instructions the first time they are given 5. Do your best every time! Grading Nine-weeks grades are determined based on the total number of points earned divided by the total number of points possible for the nine-weeks. Students and parents are encouraged to frequently check Edline.net, as it is updated at several times a week.
Grading Scale 100-93 A 92-85 B 84-75 C 74-65 D 64F

Make Up Work Late work is not accepted in this class for full credit unless an excused absence is noted. In that case, school policy will be followed. The student has the same number of days as the absence to make up the work. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work was missed and to make up that work. When in doubt, please contact the teacher as soon as possible. Notes Taking notes is a requirement for this class. Notes are taken for familiarity with a concept as well as examples to consult while completing homework. Notes are also taken to practice a skill

that will likely be a necessity in college. When absent, PLEASE consult a friend, study buddy or even the teacher to copy any missed notes.

Assignments Homework is assigned regularly. Each assignment is expected to be completed on time and to the best of the students ability. Some homework assignments will be graded or checked for completeness. Extra points may be possible for certain correct answers. Please consult the assignment sheet for specific textbook assignments. Homework Check/Quizzes On selected days, students will be asked to complete a homework check. These reviews cover only the material from the homework from the previous night. These short reviews may be worth anywhere from 5 to 20 points depending on the number of questions and the difficulty level of the material. Quizzes may also be given on smaller pieces of content. These practices allow the teacher and student to gauge the level of understanding and to adjust the learning if needed. Tests A test will be given at the end of each unit. Depending on the number of questions and the difficulty level of the material, test may be worth anywhere from 60 to 110 points. Tests will always be announced at least one week prior. Materials Students are expected to bring each of the following materials with them to class each day: 1. Pencil 2. Paper 3. Textbook 4. And a folder or binder.
* Graphing calculators are strongly recommended, but not required. If you purchase a graphing calculator, anything from the TI-83 or TI-84 series are recommended.
