WORKSHEET 5

Reading the Bible as Literature

ON THE PRINCIPLES OF LITERARY INTERPRETATION

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Use the three principles of literary interpretation to come up with a full reading of a Biblical passage.

SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS: 1. As a group, agree on which text i.e. passage each of the members is going to read. 2. Individually, research about your passage. Make sure that your sources are valid and legitimate. 3. After gathering enough data, discuss among yourselves the passage you have chosen. Agree on the genre of the text. Cite evidences to support your claim (genre). Then articulate the Author Meaning and Text Meaning of the passage. When you do these, make sure that you employ the big ideas of the three principles on literary interpretation. 4. When your group is done, work individually for the Personal Meaning of the text. Elaborate on it i.e. articulate your context so that any reader would clearly understand your reading. 5. Complete the table on the next page. 6. When you are done, upload your worksheet to Scribd, and embed it to your PLW.

The Potters Vessel

JEREMIAH 18, 1-12 LITERARY GENRE

Biblical Metaphor / Parable (which connotes a Biblical and Universal Truth of Man)
AUTHOR MEANING Talks about Gods Patience, Justice and plan for man. Although man stray away, Justice will come, and through Gods discipline, man will be formed into what God had destined when He rst breathed life into man.

TEXT MEANING God is the Potter, and we are the clay. God has a plan for his creations, us the clay, and yet at times we become marred (in essence sin came into our lives and we turn away) so he must break us and reform us, through circumstance to which we will return to Him and the plan He has for us. In the end, God has an end plan, and although He would have to break us to teach us at some point when we turn away, He promises man that in the end, He was a plan to better them in the end.

PERSONAL MEANING Based on my interpretation of the text, the opinions i have formed, the belief which has stemmed from the reading of the passage and the perception of the meaning; Man represents the vessels, clay. We were made of dust, imbued with water of life from God, through Jesus. God has a plan, and continuos to mold us and guide us into a greater end with Him.
