Graduate Profile
Lee-anne Jago Operations Manager, Kaiteriteri Kayaks Lee-anne Jago has an office that looks out over turquoise waters and golden sands, which has helped eased the transition from sea kayak guide to manager in a kayaking company. When I decided to get my degree in commerce at NMIT I was really worried that might have to end up working in an office block in Wellington, but here I am using my degree in a fantastic location at Kaiteriteri and I couldnt ask for more. The 33 year old is the Operations Manager at Kaiteriteri Kayaks, owned by Ngai Tahu Tourism. The former sea kayak guide and instructor is in charge of 35 staff, a job that she started just days before she graduated. Her boss Gary Easthope says having formal training has given Lee-anne key management skills. Her degree complements her practical experience nicely and its allowed her to move to the management level. Originally from Matamata in the Waikato, Lee-anne came to Nelson to study adventure tourism and is now firmly entrenched. I was keen to stay in adventure tourism but I didnt want to do the physical stuff anymore. Doing this degree gave me the key to open up other doors. Its perfect for me. With a double major in marketing and management under her belt, shes enthusiastic about encouraging others to follow in her footsteps. The pathway I took was great I started off doing some papers for a certificate in business and then as I grew more confident I was able to cross-credit and step up to the diploma and finally the degree. And getting a degree at NMIT was a lot less daunting than Lee-anne initially envisaged. I was nervous about being the oldest in the class but there were heaps of students in their 30s and the support from NMIT was amazing. I even had one-on-one tuition to help me through a statistics paper. Lee-anne knows what management style she likes and is keen to go further to develop her management skills. Its great to be able to use my management training in an industry I love. And who else gets to finish work and walk less than a minute from their office to go waka training!

FAQs
How is the study year structured? The study year is broken into two 17-week semesters. Each has a two four week midsemester break. How much time do I need to spend studying? Most courses are 15 credits requiring 3-5 hours a week in class and a similar time on self study, completing assignments and revising for exams. You should allow a total of 150 hours of study for each 15 credit course. Some courses are 7.5 or 30 credits halve or double these times accordingly. What does fulltime study mean? Fulltime students usually study 8 courses or 120 credits a year requiring 1200 hours of class and self study time. Note: International students must study a minimum of 90 credits a year to meet student visa requirements. Can I study this programme part time? Nearly all programmes can be completed by doing as little as 1 or 2 courses each semester. Many courses have resources on NMIT Online which can be accessed through the internet from home or work. What if I miss a class? No problem, but see the tutor (or NMIT Online) to catch up. Attending class is not compulsory but success is usually directly related to attendance. Tutors will not spend time helping you catch up if you regularly miss arranged classes.
