1. SCOPE NIOEC Specifications cover the general requirements for detailed engineering, procurements, testing inspection & construction of refinery/ oil plant, distribution depots, pump stations and pipelines. This Specification covers general requirements for design material, fabrication, inspection and test of different types of expansion joint mainly used in lines of pumps, compressors, turbines, vessels and tanks. This Specification is intended to supplement purchase orders placed for expansion joint. If requirements of this Specification differ from, or is in conflict with purchase documents, the following will take precedence in the order of priority as indicated hereunder: a) Purchase order, b) Data Sheets and drawings, c) This Specifications. 2. REFERENCES Throughout this Specification the following dated and undated standards/ codes are referred to. These referenced documents shall, to the extent specified herein, form a part of this Specification. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any supplements and amendments) applies. For dated references, the edition cited applies. The applicability of changes in dated references that occur after the cited date shall mutually be agreed upon by NIOEC and the Vendor/Contractor. ASME B-31.3 Code BSI BS 6129 (AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS) "Process Piping" "Boiler & Pressure vessel" (BRITISH STANDARD INSTITUTION) " Code of practice for the selection and application of bellows expansion joints for use in pressure systems" (EXPANSION JOINT MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATIONS)

Executor:The Executor is the party which carries out all or part of construction for the pipeline project. For expansion joint definition & nomenclature refer to EJMA section A. 5. DESIGN 5. 1 Standards Guidance on the selection and application of metallic bellows expansion joints is contained in BS 6129, ASME B 31.3 and EJMA 5. 2 Specified items In preparing the Expansion Joint design specification it is imperative that the system designer completely review the piping system layout, flowing medium, pressure, temperature, movements, etc. The Expansion Joint Data Sheet (Form 1) can be used as a guide. Particular attention shall be given to the following items: Where expansion joints are subject to combination of longitudinal and transverse movements, both movements shall be considered (see Fig. below).

Lateral displacement

Angular deflection

Combined deflection

Where applicable, the type of expansion joint shall be specified in the preliminary stage of quotation. In this case the design details shall be determined by the manufacturer and approved by the NIOEC. 5.2.1 To determine the location and type of Expansion Joint most suitable for the application, the designer shall consider the requirements of EJMA Standard which provide numerous examples to assist him in this respect. He should also take into account availability of supporting structures for anchoring and guiding of the line and the direction and magnitude of thermal movements to be absorbed. 5.2.2 Bellows type expansion joints should be avoided in a service that coking can occur. If a suitable piping configuration can not be designed to eliminate the joint, connections shall be provided to enable flushing of the area between bellows and liner to be carried out in a non-coking medium. 5. 3 Notices As a rule, no expansion joints shall be used. The use of expansion joints is limited to the case in which thermal expansion cannot be absorbed by pipes alone because of a short route. The exhaust expansion shall permit movement of at least 50 mm in the axial and 19 mm in the lateral directions. Expansion joints of the sliding sleeve or bellows type should be provided with temporary means to limit lateral movement.

NIOEC-SP-50-59(0)

5.3.1 The supporting and guiding of piping systems containing bellows expansion joints shall be fully assessed at the design stage, preferably also by the bellows expansion joint manufacturer, to ensure that the bellows expansion joint deflects in the manner for which it was designed, and that the system retains structural stability. a) Only where it is impractical to increase flexibility sufficiently, to reduce the stress range or anchor loads to acceptable levels, use of bellows or expansion joints should be considered. b) The effects of anchors and restraints to provide for the intended operation and protection of expansion joints. 5.3.2 To protect terminal equipment or other (weaker) portions of the system, restraints (such as anchors and guides) shall be provided where necessary to control movement or to direct expansion into those portions of the system which are designed to absorb them. The design, arrangement and location of restraints shall ensure that expansion joint movements occur in the directions for which the joint is designed. In addition to the other thermal forces and moments, the effects of friction in other supports of the system shall be considered in the design of such anchors and guides. 5.3.3 Where corrugated or slip-type expansion joints, or flexible metal hose assemblies are used, anchors and guides shall be provided where necessary to direct the expansion into the joint or hose assembly. Such anchors shall be designed to withstand the force specified by the manufacturer for the design conditions at which the joint or hose assembly is to be used. If this force is otherwise unknown, it shall be taken as the sum of the product of the maximum internal area times the design pressure plus the force required to deflect the joint or hose assembly. Where expansion joints or flexible metal hose assemblies are subjected to a combination of longitudinal and transverse movements, both movements shall be considered in the design and application of the joint or hose assembly. 5.3.4 Expansion joints or couplings of the slip joint type or expansion joints of the bellows type may be used when limited space or other reasons will not give sufficient flexibility with the other methods. Expansion joints shall be used only with adequate guides and anchors and when the fluid plugging properties cannot make the expansion joint ineffective. 6. DELIVERY, HANDLING, MAINTAIN & INSTALLATION OF EXPANSION JOINTS All expansion joints shall be installed in accordance with following specification and installation drawings, if any, supplied to the Executor. 6.1 Upon receipt, the Executor shall check for any damage occurred during transit. 6.2 The Executor shall bring to the notice of the Engineer any damage done to the bellows/corrugations, hinges, tie rods, flanges/weld ends, etc. 6.3 Each expansion joint shall be blown free of dust/foreign matter with compressed air or shall be cleaned with a piece of cloth. 6.4 For handling and installation of expansion joints, great care shall be taken while slinging. An expansion joint shall never be slinged with bellows corrugations/external shrouds, tie rods, angles, etc.

NIOEC-SP-50-59(0)

6.5 An expansion joint shall preferably be slinged on the end pipes/flanges or on the middle pipe. 6.6 All expansion joint shall be delivered to the Executor at "Installation Length" as will be indicated on the drawings. The "Installation Length" is maintained by means of shipping rods, angles welded to the flanges or weld ends or by wooden or metallic stops. 6.7 The pipe ends in which the expansion joint is to be installed shall be perfectly aligned or shall have specified lateral deflection as noted on the relevant drawings. 6.8 The pipe ends/flanges shall be spaced at distance which will be specified in the drawings. 6.9 The expansion joint shall be placed between the mating pipe ends/flanges and shall be tack welded/ bolted for checking correct alignment of the mating pipes. 6.10 After the expansion joint is installed, the Executor shall ensure that matching pipes and expansion joint are in correct alignment and that the pipes are well supported and guided. 6.11 The expansion joint shall not have any lateral deflection. The Executor shall maintain parallelism rings or belows convolutions. 6.12 For carrying out welding, earthing lead shall not be attached with the expansion joint. The expansion bellows shall be protected from arc weld shots and welding spatter. 6.13 When an internal sleeve is provided, the bellows should be installed in the vertical position with the sleeve pointing downwards and the convolutions shall be self-draining. 6.14 Insulation shall not be applied directly to the bellows convolutions. 6.15 The use of molybdenum disulphide lubricants shall be avoided on external tie bars, etc., if the bellows operate at a high temperature. 6.16 Hydrostatic testing of the system having expansion joint, shall be performed with the shipping lugs in position. 6.17 Expansion joints for which the maximum permissible cold test pressure is considerably lower than the maximum hydrostatic test pressure permissible for the other components of the system shall be removed or blanked off from the line before testing. Such equipment should be inspected during the commissioning with due regard to the pressure limitation.
