Creating realistic glass material in 3DS MAX

by Mike Nuts o n Mar.19 , 20 0 3, under Tuto rials

Gallery updates New artist: Marko Vuko ta Gallery update Gallery update In this tuto rial yo u will learn ho w to create a realistic glass material and turn o ur chess pawn into a realistic glass o bject. Key terms include reflectio n, refractio n, o pacity, and fall-o ff. This tuto rial is aimed at the beginner, but since there are several ways to create glass, it might be interesting fo r everyo ne else as well. Altho ugh this tuto rial is based o n 3D Studio Max, the same settings apply to many o ther 3D pro ducts.

Not e: Click o n the thumbnail in each step fo r a larger screensho t that includes the viewpo rts and the relevant po rtio n
o f the user interface.

St ep 1 Because this tuto rial co vers o nly ho w to create the glass material yo u need to add an
o bject to yo ur scene yo urself. This can be anything fro m the simple pawn we use (do wnlo ad the chess pawn here) to the so phisticated high detail mo dels yo u create.

St ep 2 Press the M key to o pen the Material Edito r (o r select Material Editor fro m the
Rendering menu) and rename the first material to Glass.

Drag the material to yo ur o bject in the scene to assign it.

St ep 3
Set the Ambient and Diffuse co lo r o f the material to black. And set the Specular Level to 275 and Glossiness to 45.

St ep 4
Click o n the blank square butto n after Opacity and add a Falloff map. Set the Falloff Type to Fresnel (click here fo r an additio nal screen sho t).

Go up o ne level, back to the Glass material, by cho o sing Glass fro m the dro p do wn menu (where it says Map #3, see the additio nal screen sho t.)

St ep 5
No w that the main Glass material is select again, scro ll do wn in the Material Editor and add a new Raytrace map in the Refraction slo t. Set the Refraction level to 8 0 .

St ep 6
To make the reflectio ns and the co lo rs smo o th, instead o f grainy, yo u will have to enable Supersampling fo r the Glass material (just abo ve the Maps ro llo ut. Enable the o ptio n Enable Sampler and cho o se a metho d fro m the list. In mo st cases the Max 2.5 Star will do just fine, but if yo ur machine can handle it, yo u can try o thers that may give better results.

St ep 7
Yo u can press F9 no w to do a quick render, but it wo nt lo o k much like glass yet. First yo u will need to make so me changes to yo ur scene, the enviro nment. Remember that glass is almo st entirely transparent and can be seen o nly because o f the reflectio ns o f light and o bjects in its surro undings. Lets start with adding a gro und plane. Assign it a wo o d material fro m the Material Library (we used the default Wo o d_Ashen). Make sure the plane is large as sho wn in the screen sho t.

St ep 8
Next, lets makes so me changes to the enviro nment as the glass will need so mething to reflect. Yo u can add o bject and a sky and such yo urself, but fo r the sake o f this tuto rials an enviro nment map will do . Fro m the Rendering menu, select Environment (o r press 8 ). Click the big empty butto n belo w Environment Map and select Background_Mountains (o r any o ther backgro und) fro m the Mtl Library.

St ep 9
If yo u render yo ur scene again, yo u will see it will lo o k very different and really glass-like. Ho wever, there are ways to make it mo re realistic. Yo u co uld start by enabling the 2-Sided o ptio n fo r the Glass material. This will allo w us to see the inside o f the mo del. Click the thumb o n the right fo r mo re info . Render again, and no tice the difference, if any. The results wo nt always lo o k go o d, depending o n the mo del.

St ep 10
Lets try ano ther trick I like to use to make the glass mo re realistic, altho ugh it will make the glass o bject a ho llo w o bject (which is fine fo r many glass o bjects and o ften even desired). Select yo ur o bject and press CTRL-V (select Co py and click OK) to clo ne it. Apply a Push mo difier to the clo ne and set the push value to -0 .5 (try o ther values after rendering to check which wo rks best fo r yo ur mo del).

St ep 11
In the Material Edito r make a co py o f the Glass material and name it Glass Int. Make sure the o ptio n 2-Sided is enabled fo r the Glass Int material but disabled fo r the Glass material. Assign the Glass Int material to the clo ne and make sure the o riginal Glass material is assigned to the o utside mo del.

St ep 12

Render again (F9 o r F10 ) and no tice the difference. Yo u sho uld end up with so mething similar as sho wn o n the right. The actual result will depend mo stly o n the geo metry o f yo ur mo del and its enviro nment. Try o ut different backgro und and check o ut the results.

This co ncludes my glass material tuto rial. Thanks fo r reading!

I ho pe yo u enjo yed this tuto rial and that it co ntributed so mething to yo ur skills and kno wledge! This tuto rial is created o riginally fo r 3Dvalley.co m. Yo u are no t allo wed to redistribute this tuto rial in any fo rm.
