Residents at Hidden Valley got their last look at their properties on Aug. 11. The entire resort has been reclassified as unfit for human habitation by Health Canada and is scheduled for demolition. We have been in touch with the provincial and federal government and expect word very soon as to their responsibility for clean-up, said Hidden Valley Homeowner Association President Gary Nason. He said with the amount of damage at the site, it would be impossible for the homeowners to attempt clean-up themselves; however, he clarified that the association wants to be sure the site is left in an acceptable condition for the Siksika Nation. Previous to the flooding, the association was hoping that renegotiations could occur with Siksika to enable residents to renew their leases. It is obvious that the flood has changed things, said Nason. One thing is for sure, the way it is now, it wont be rebuilt, said Nason. He said there are a few salvageable cabins, but owners will have to make an appointment with Health Canada to assess the condition before they will be allowed to move them offsite; he encouraged homeowners to consider a building inspection for stability, before investing in a move. No one is allowed on-site without an appointment. Whether the residents would try to rebuild at another location was not certain. Upon initial investigation, Nason said there really wasnt a site like Hidden Valley that could accommodate that many residents. Financial losses were also discouraging many of the residents. Nason said huge losses experienced by many of the owners will follow them for many years to come. Continued on Page 2

Connecting seniors through technology

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter On Aug. 15 the federal government officially announced a funding agreement for the New Horizons Seniors program. The program is designed to help ensure that seniors are able to benefit from their community, while contributing to the quality of life through social participation and active living. The grant, given by the government, gave Strathmores regional branch of Bow Valley College (BVC) an opportunity to be able to purchase laptops so that they may offer a Connecting Seniors program. The reason we purchased laptops and not desktops is so that I would have the flexibility because the consideration was the isolation factor and that they often wont leaveto come out to programming, so we brought the programming to them which was fantastic, said Teri McKinnon, Regional Lead for education and business development for BVC Strathmore/Chestermere. Connecting Seniors encourages seniors to begin adopting technology into their daily lives. There are four classes in each session that are an hour and a half each. One session was already held in June and the following three sessions will take place at the Wheatland Lodge, BVC and at Sagewood. One of the sessions that we have in the series is digital photography and Facebook and Skype, so they can communicate to their grandkids, said McKinnon. Their kids usually buy them computers because they want to keep in touch but then mom and dad dont know how to use them. Its critical to keep them connected to their families especially in rural because when they have to go into a residence it is far away from their family. The other three classes include computer basics, introduction to the Internet and digital photography. Thanks to the funding from the government, BVC was able to purchase 12 laptops and is able to offer the sessions free of charge to those interested.

The government of Canada, Canadian taxpayers and Canadian citizens support every effort possible to enhance and enrich the lives of Canadian seniors including right here in Strathmore, said MP Kevin Sorenson. In communities large and small the New Horizons program for seniors helps to ensure that seniors are able to benefit from and contribute to the quality of life in their community through their social participation and their active living. Were very pleased as a government of Canada to be able to partner with good people like Bow Valley College and know that were making a difference, not just across Canada, but right here in Strathmore. Among seniors, only 51 per cent ages 64 to 74 use the Internet. That number falls to 27 per cent for those over the age of 75. The session at Sagewood had six participants. Elizabeth and Ernie Gulka both signed up for the classes. I wanted to learn more about computers, I had a basic knowledge but its so great to go into an in-depth (class) on what a computer can do for you, said Elizabeth. It intimidates you but I feel more comfortable now sitting down in front of the computer, I know what I am doing, and it cant talk back to me, I can talk to it. For Ernie it was to gain a little more knowledge and to not be scared of it. Irene Dougans older sister lives on Vancouver Island and had told Dougan that she needs a computer so that they would be able to communicate a little better. She kind of liked the idea, but said its one thing to think about it and another to actually do it. I didnt have a computer, so I thought yeah Ill just think about it, but then when the course became available and I thought, hey you know thats a good idea I should, the opportunity is here, said Dougan. Anne Crossan had used computers at times throughout her working life, but it has been years since she was last on one. She said it is like learning from the beginning for her, but she also took part in the classes because the opportunity is there.
Hidden Valley to be demolished

Continued from Page 1 The major thing is that the government will not compensate the non-primary homeowners, said Nason. Many are blue collar workers and retirees. The owners want to let the government know that they continue to feel discriminated against by the lack of support. There were a lot of members who had life savings and retirement money tied up in their buildings. With 305 dwellings, the resort was bigger than some town sites in Alberta. Nason said he is sad to see the site go; however, he hopes the community members will still keep in touch with one another. He feels the Facebook page will still be operational, long after the resort site has been levelled. There have been a few get-togethers at Speargrass Golf Course. Many of the residents formed lifelong friendships that he hoped would transcend this tragedy. It was a unique and wonderful community. Everyone must look ahead and go forward from here. I hope they will stay in touch. Friends just dont go away, said Nason.

Organic farm tour

Four Strathmore area organic farms once again opened their doors to the public on August 18. Local organic producers Winters Turkeys, Heritage Harvest Farms, Poplar Bluff Farm and Cams Carrots hosted a bus load of approximately 45 people from Calgary who spent the day touring each operation and tasting the goods they produce. At Heritage Harvest Farms (pictured) tour participants were provided with a history of each type of wheat grown on the farm, one dating back 10,000 years, and an up close look at the equipment used in the process right from planting to producing flour. At the end of the tour, participants were treated to a barbeque featuring food from each of the farms they visited.

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson was first elected to the House of Commons in 2000, and since then has filled many roles and duties. On July 15 Sorenson was sworn in as the new Minister of State for Finance. Im honoured, first of all that the Prime Minister would ask me to come into cabinet, but also that I get the privilege of working with Jim Flaherty, said Sorenson. So as we prepare for a budget, as we move towards balancing our budget, there will be consultations with stake holders and groups all across the country. I will be coordinating a lot of that and meeting people as we prepare for the budget coming next spring. Following his 2006 re-election, Sorenson was elected to the House of Commons standing committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. In 2008 he was elected as chair of the House of Commons special committee on the Canadian mission in Afghanistan, and chair of the standing committee on public safety and national security. Some of Sorensons new role will include responding to questions during Question Period, taking legislation to the House of Commons and helping to shepherd finance bills and different pieces of legislation through the House of Commons. Sorenson will be the Minister of Finances voice when Flaherty isnt in the House. Even though he will have a bigger

voice at the House now, Sorenson says dealing with the constituents is his favourite part. The MP part is what I like the best, youre in the constituency, always the constituency is the most important, these are the folks that put their trust in you in an election so we certainly want to still be as visible in the communities as we can be, so that part I still have, said Sorenson. Its been a few years since the economy crash and though things are looking better now, the economy is still the main focus for the federal government. For our government the economy remains the top priority. Many of the places around the world are still in very
fragile recovery mode, whether it be Europe, or the United States or even parts of Asia, this was a global economic downturn. The economy is the big focus of our government and with that economy also is keeping taxes low, helping to build infrastructure and making sure that we create jobs, said Sorenson. Not necessarily that the government creates jobs but that we build an economic environment where the private sector can create jobs, the last thing that we want to do is just start hiring people to work public service, we want Strathmore to continue to be progressive like they have been under this mayor and others.

We all know that smoking is bad for our health. It has been shown that middle aged men who smoke show a more rapid decline in brain function as they age compared to men to dont smoke. So here is another active step male smokers can make to reduce their risk of Alzheimers and other dementias. Quit smoking. If you have children, its good to have a digital thermometer in the house to take their temperature when they are ill. The advantage of the new digital units is that they can record temperatures in the mouth, armpit or rectum in under a minute. The old mercury-filled thermometers are no longer recommended. The ear thermometers are not recommended for newborns. Its always interesting when research is done on a certain food and its effect on disease. Some good studies have shown a reduction in the risk of getting Parkinsons Disease when people eat peppers 2-4 times a week. No one is quite sure why but making them part of your diet cant hurt. Vision problems in the elderly can affect how medications are taken. Tell your pharmacist if you have problems reading the prescription labels on your medication. There are ways of making the printing larger or dispensing the medications in special packaging. We have many ways of helping you to take your medications safely and accurately. Talk to our pharmacists for advice.

Kids ages 8-12 were invited to play games, get their bikes and helmets checked and ride a course at Kinsmen Park on Aug. 17 for the Tour of Alberta Can Bike Festival. Almost all children received new helmets and learned the proper safety procedures when cycling.

Audit of all senator expenses forthcoming

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter After continued breaking announcements of scandal in the senate, Canadas auditor general Michael Ferguson announced that he plans to review each and every senators expenses. Were very disappointed with what we see with some of the senators, its really a question of ethical behaviour, said Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson. The expense scandal first made headlines after word broke that Senator Mike Duffy had claimed his primary residency outside of Ottawa to claim living expenses. Duffy has lived and worked in Ottawa for years, but had claimed his primary residence was in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. Since news first broke of the Duffy expense scandal, three other senators have also been put in the spotlight for their controversial claims: Senators Mac Harb and Patrick Brazeau for their living and housing allowances, and Pamela Wallins travel expenses. Senators have a huge responsibility to the people of Canada, said Sorenson. Its not that the people of Canada owe them anything, its that theyre there and theyre in a trusted position and we expect that people will conduct themselves in manner thats honourable, said Sorenson. It certainly disappoints all of us from all parties when we see senators from all parties involved in this. I think the more transparency we can have on peoples expenses and the way people conduct their business I think the better off we are. Besides the RCMP investigation, and the announcement of reviews of each senators expenses, there are also other steps being put into place to try to ensure this doesnt happen in the future. Sorenson says there will be more transparency of expense claims in the future, more internal audits and more reporting of those claims. The controversy that has arisen is just one of many reasons why Sorenson thinks more reform is needed in the senate. The senate can be a very good body of sober second thought for regional issues, but its drifted. We have to make sure theres reform in the senate, there has to be more accountability thats why I support elected senators, said Sorenson. For every other body of government there is an election every few years, and so if elected officials arent doing their jobs then people will have a chance to see a new government come in. Thats not the current case with senate. Those appointed can hold a seat for 35 years without ever having to be forced out or face an election. Sorenson would like to see regular elections for senate members, he would like to see it become more equal across the province and he would like to see senate members given certain powers, not all powers. One of the main roles of the senate is to look at legislation being introduced and ensuring that it is in the best interest of Canadians before it is passed and put into effect. Its a good control I think that causes us to not look only from my own constituents perspective but is it good for all of Canada, are we taking advantage of one part of the country, said Sorenson. Senators are there to look at all legislation but I feel senators should be looking at it more of a regional protection not just a partisan protection, in other words not just protecting our party line, but protecting our region. Following the audits of Harb, Duffy and Brazeau, the senate ordered that tens of thousands of dollars be repaid from wrongly collected allowances. Wallin was ordered to repay more than $120,000. The auditing process into all senators expenses is scheduled to take place soon. It will follow the same methodology as performance audits, which can take up to 18 months. Findings from the audit may be released as the process is happening. In a report from Global News Ferguson said, We havent come to that decision yet, but we understand that people dont want to wait 18 months to get all the information. So if theres any way that we can do some interim reporting, we will do that.

Pat Fule Fule for Thought By now, most parents are celebrating the latest back to school ads, but dreading the purchase of all those school supplies! Remember, back in the old days, when you got all your supplies free from your school? Sadly, those days are gone for all of us, teachers included. We also have to buy school supplies, that must have new backpack, clothes, and of course the dreaded lunch kit. Now, when I was a kid, I had a plastic bag as my lunch kit! There were no fancy bags with cool colours and all sorts of compartments. In fact, back then I was called a latch key kid. In case youre a youngster, and dont know this word, it meant that from a young age, I had my own house key, which I tied to one of my pants loops. My parents both worked, so my brother and I needed to become independent we thought it was awesome! Since I only lived two blocks from school, I could get in and out of my house at will (Im not sure how many of us feel safe now having young kids home alone unless its that Macaulay Culkin kid). I never lost my key, and if I forgot it at home, I was the designated burglar. I was the littlest, and long before all this, my brother and I figured out how to get in one of the basement windows. I was the one who, when the window was pushed in far enough, would be shoved into the basement. That is, until the one day, when they may have shoved and lowered a little too hard, and I pulled the whole window pane on top of me, shattering the glass everywhere! I wasnt cut, but my allowance disappeared until the window was paid for. Nowadays, its all technical, where the kids can know the secret code to unlock the front door. Wheres the adventure, the risk, the danger, in that? No, hanging by your feet, being lowered by your brothers pals is the true test of your mettle, because you never know if this one time theyre going to let go (Hmmmmm maybe they did)! As an adult, our kids never got their own key at
a young age. Times had changed, things werent as simple, and I think many of us parents hovered over our kids to protect them. While as a kid, I came home to make my own lunch, the adult me became the lunch maker. My job was to provide healthy lunches so theyd have energy for all that book learnin. The problem was that my son always hurried to play sports at lunch and didnt always eat his! I wouldnt find this out for about a week, when I would find five flattened, gross ham sandwiches at the bottom of his backpack! They were very flat, and I was very mad, because the food was wasted, as well as my efforts! It became me checking each day or so, to see if the sandwiches had become mushy paninis again (hopefully, he wasnt just chucking them! Im not sure Ill ever know the full story). I found some little lunch cards with inspiring sayings on them, but I think some of them were buried in that same sloppy goo in the back pack! My daughter Bree, though, always ate her lunches. In fact, I had a whole different problem with her. All she ever wanted was a plain ham sandwich or KD in a thermos. However, the very last thing Breanne ever wanted on a sandwich was lettuce! Through her childhood, she never met a vegetable she liked, and she resisted them as much as she could. It got so that it was a challenge to me! Id try different types of meats, and hide one little piece of lettuce in between the meat slices. I figured that no seven-year-old was going to beat me! Sadly, each day I tried it, she came home smiling, saying nice try Dad! The ironic thing now, is that she loves all kinds of vegetables, and will load up her sandwiches when she makes her lunches! Where was this kid about 13 YEARS ago?! One March, we were looking after two of our friends kids, so they could pick up their newly adopted son from a Romanian orphanage. These orphanages were very plain, very cold, and the workers even played recordings of dogs barking, so the kids wouldnt try to wander! One of our friends children was a boy one year older than Brennen. I made lunches for all four kids during the week, but I heard
that John wasnt eating his lunches, and was selling them! I didnt want to get mad, but Deb and I asked why he would do that? He told us that he wanted to get enough money to buy his new baby brother some books from the school Book Fair! Someone that young had learned the act of charity, to give up something for another person. Its funny how something as simple as a sandwich can become something much more powerful. Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Municipal elections are being held for seven district representatives in Wheatland County on Oct. 21, 2013, and the call is going out for community minded representatives to serve for terms of four years. Everyone is eligible to run for election provided they meet the requirements of the Elections Act. Really, it generally limits almost no one from running everyone has the opportunity if they so choose, said Wheatland County Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin. If you are considering whether you might want to let your name stand, a candidate information session might be worth your time. It is offered 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Aug. 29, 2013 at the Best Western Port O Call in Calgary. The Candidate Orientation is put on by the Society of Local Government Managers. Information and registration forms can be downloaded at www.albertaleaders.ca Municipal Affairs is also encouraging municipalities to host video conferences for candidates through library, school board or company facilities. The broadcast is Sept. 16, with an election official refresher at 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and info for prospective candidates from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Technical hookup requirements are on the municipal website and more information can be obtained from Tony Sykora at Alberta Municipal Affairs, tony.sykora@gov.ab.ca or 780-422-8125. To be a candidate in the County election, you must be eligible to vote and live in the County for six months. Some responsibilities of a good councillor are: to keep the welfare and interests of the community as a whole and present any information that may affect the community, be able to fulfill all council appointed duties develop and evaluate policy and programs communicate with administration and staff maintain confidentiality for private matters attend and participate in council meetings and appointed committees. There are close to 40 committees on which various council members serve. There are also conferences, conventions, seminars, training and social obligations vying for a councillors time. Reading and public interaction is an integral part of the job. A good understanding of a councillors authoritative powers and county administration practises is good preparation. Familiarity with county issues and policies will also be needed. There are some ineligibility factors outlined in the Election Act. Protecting jobs for Canadians

Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report In our riding of Crowfoot, everyone knows that too many of our urban and rural businesses have too few workers to fill available jobs. Economic sectors and geographic regions across Canada also confront labour shortages. This situation affects the progress and economic growth of local communities and our nation as a whole. Our Conservative governments priority is ensuring that Canadians are first in line for available jobs. As your Member of Parliament, I have been listening to the concerns of our local business communities with regard to getting workers to fill jobs. Our strong agriculture industry in particular uses the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). Some farms and ranches in our riding have long-term relations with temporary foreign workers who return every year to help us. In Crowfoot, we expect that Albertans and other Canadians should have the first opportunity for available jobs or employment. The reforms to the TFWP announced in Economic Action Plan 2013 that came into effect on July 31, 2013, respects our local need for temporary foreign workers. English and French are now the only languages that can be identified as a job requirement. This language restriction does not apply to positions under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program, and most Agricultural Stream or on-farm primary agricultural positions. As well, the new requirement for employers to expand their advertising efforts to hire Canadians before they will be eligible to apply to hire temporary foreign workers, does not apply to the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program, and most Agricultural Stream or on-farm primary agricultural positions. We all hope that the advertising reforms will increase the chance for other local businesses to access Canadian workers. These improvements help ensure that the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is only used as intendedto fill acute skills shortages on a temporary basis. That is exactly the way the program has always worked in our area of Alberta. Our Conservative government is working to ensure the needs of Canadian employers are met and we can get the precise labourers we need when we need them. While it is important to ensure that jobs are offered to Canadians first and that firms are prevented from using the temporary worker program to outsource Canadian jobs, employers in our riding always underline for me the fact that anyone they have coming to Alberta from abroad with a pre-arranged job is poised for success and they will be contributing specifically to economic growth. Why I became a public librarian

Rachel Dick Hughes, Dir. Library Services Strathmore Municipal Library I have always loved going to the library. I love that you can walk in the door and find out just about anything about everything. I love discovering a new book that might become my new favourite. So library school seemed a natural choice after I completed my BA in English Literature. What could be a better fit for me than spending all day, every day, in one of my favourite places? So imagine my surprise when, instead of interest and excitement, my career choice instead generated a general bewilderment in most people I know: Really, a librarian? Are libraries even going to be around in 5 years? Are you a person who shares these concerns but have just been too polite to tell me you think I have thrown my life/education/money away? Based on my own experience, I trace the doubt around the future of libraries to a basic misconception about the role of libraries in our communities. Here it is: You only go to the library when you need to find out information, and all information is available online. Has anyone else heard this before? Here are a few reasons I think that libraries can survive and even thrive in the information age: 1) Libraries are not just about information; they are a resource for recreation. We have thousands of stories in every kind of format, whether it be book, audiobook, or film. Libraries banish boredom by having something for every taste and whim. 2) Libraries are not solely for individual pursuits; they are a hub for connection. They are a place where community members can come together to connect about books or about anything. We provide affordable meeting space for community members (did you know it is only $10/hr to book our meeting room?). We provide programs for children and adults that promote learning and fun while building a sense of community. 3) Libraries are a free public space. Places where community members can gather without the expectation that they make a purchase are few and far between. The public library has always been, and will always be, space that is open to everyone. And our space is becoming more beautiful all the time have you seen the mobile Hope Bridges gave us or our latest art exhibit? 4) Libraries guarantee that everyone has access to technology. Anyone of us who have had our internet go down knows how critical it is to access the online world. The digital divide threatens to leave behind anyone without access to technology or without the skills to use it. We provide wireless internet and public access computers to anyone who comes through our doors. We also provide free technological support to ensure our patrons are able to take advantage of all that technology has to offer. And in case you would rather not take my word for it, let me give you some numbers. We have had 2,000 more library visits this year than over the same period last year. Reference questions have increased by 77%. And we help about 60 people a month with computers, tablets, ereaders, and smart phones. Libraries now are doing more than they ever have before. Many cities and towns (including those nearby, like Drumheller and Turner Valley) are investing in new libraries as social, cultural, and educational community centres. We at the Strathmore Municipal Library would love to take on a greater role in helping to make Strathmore a vibrant community, but our current space is filled to capacity. We would love to have room for more materials, for comfortable seating areas, for small and large meeting rooms, for more computers. We want to have a library where people love to be. Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Sending kids to camp or putting them into extra curricular activities can at times be tough. Providing the same kind of childhood activities for a special needs child can also be challenging but thats why there are organizations like the Presidents Choice Childrens Charity. On Aug. 17 Tina Shipley, owner of Tinas No Frills, presented a $600 grant to 11-year-old Ethen Tracey and his dad Terry. The grant will allow Ethen, who has Cerebral Palsy, the opportunity to go to camp again for another year. What we do is twice a year we collect donations though our tills and then depending on the year, they change up what the icons look like but it always has something to do with childrens charity, said Shipley. Ive found that the town is really generous with things like that. Ethen goes to a camp in the summertime called Camp Bonaventure put on by Between Friends Club. It helps special needs kids have a really good summer, said Terry. The camp is just a great thing for these kids, its awesome a lot of one-on-one hands on (activities), very great for the kids. The grant was presented at the store to the Tracey family, and there was cake and a celebration for Ethen. The funds come from donations collected at all Loblaws stores, and funds collected within each province stay in that province. We collect donations at the store twice a year and Ive found that the town is really generous with things like that, said Shipley. I think its a wonderful charity. This past year was the sixth year Ethen has gone to Camp Bonaventure. Kids who attend the camp get an opportunity to go canoeing, swimming, horseback riding, overnight campout, water fights and even go to Heritage Park. In 2012 there was over $1.1 million raised which helped 57 families with special needs assistance, which was used for 141 nutrition programs that fed over 20,492 children in Alberta. Since 1989 more than 86 million reached more than 1.3 million children across Canada through the Presidents Choice Childrens Charity. In Alberta 100 per cent of funds raised here stay here.

On Aug. 24 and 25 the first annual Alberta Open Farm Days is taking place across the province. Open Farm Days gives Albertans an opportunity to discover the province beyond the city limits, said Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in a press release. The Winter family is known for opening up their farm to those interested in learning: each year they are one of the host farms for the annual organic farm tour, which was held Aug. 18 this year. I think its a (good) education to the public and to those interested to see what goes on whether it be an organic farm orjust to show people how we do it, said Darrel Winter. I think the humane treatment that these birds have and how much we love our work and how good the turkey is, all those things are something that have to be impressed upon to the public I think. Four generations of Winters have been raising turkeys as a business, and previous to that Winter said both his father and grandfather had raised them as part of a hobby farm. Winters Turkeys offers a wide variety of products, and about 10 per cent of their flock is raised organically and the rest are freerange birds. Our organic flock started in 2000. So we do both free range and organic here now. We eat a lot of organic food ourselves and the difficulty that was holding us back from organic product was to have a source of organic grain and when we finally figured that out it was pretty easy to implement organic, said Winter. Morgan Lee Times Contributor The Wheatland Whirlers Square Dance Club hosted their first charity barn dance at the Strathmore Civic Centre on Aug. 14. The price was $5 to get in, or $20 per family, with all the proceeds going to the Alberta and Northwest Territories branch of the Childrens Wish Foundation. Childrens Wish is a national nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Claudia Littlefair has been volunteering with the Strathmore branch of Childrens Wish for seven years and despite the fact that their branch currently has only two members, Littlefair was excited to combine her love of square dance as well as her love of volunteering. I just thought it was a good mix, Ive been dancing for 19 years with the square dance club and now my husbands the caller for that club, said Littlefair. We like to do things for the community. The event was full of fun with snacks, baked goods, and raffle prizes, with people of all ages dancing to the music of the Prairie Mountain Fiddlers, a fiddling group from Calgary. The fiddlers were very generous, they came out from Calgary and did

I was really pleased, said Littlefair. Elisha Jackson, a development coordinator for Childrens Wish, was also in attendance to help support the event. Community support is integral to granting wishes we cant do it without the community, said Jackson. We dont have government grants, we dont have anything like that, so we depend on the community to raise money and support. Despite living in Alberta for most of her life, this is the first barn dance featuring square dancing that Jackson has attended. (All the fundraisers) are so unique and I get to do some really cool things Ive been in non-profit for a while and this is the first time Ive been to a barn dance, said Jackson. Robert Howe and his wife Patricia have been searching for a kidney donor since Robert was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease. He currently only has 18 per cent function total for both kidneys.
Fighting for a chance to survive

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter It started off as just an average day at work in April 2009 for Robert Howe. He was at work, he felt fairly healthy, fairly fit and completely surefooted. He was securing a load on his trailer, something he had done many times in his career as a truck driver. That day, though, he lost his balance, fell off his load and was knocked unconscious. When he awoke, life, as he knew it had changed forever. At first he was placed on compensation. He went for various tests due to the accident and after a while it became apparent something was wrong. Howe was more fatigued than usual; he had numbness in his feet and other symptoms that couldnt be explained. During the last 40 years I have been a truck driver and doing the work and labour work that went with it. It was becoming more and more difficult to do my job, said Howe. Due to this, I lost my truck and other jobs. After that I couldnt keep up. I was very frustrated and scared as I didnt know what was happening to me. One of the tests Howe went for was an MRI. After completing the test he was advised that he should see a kidney specialist because something had been found around, or on, his kidneys. By this point it was August of 2009. The specialist didnt seem too concerned because Howes blood work was coming back normal and he didnt, nor does he now, have diabetes. He was sent for an ultrasound. The ultrasound confirmed that Howe has Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), which features multiple cysts, two or more, on both kidneys. He went back to see the kidney specialist who didnt appear too concerned and who explained that he has PKD. Right now I am very fortunate that I am alive, had I not gone in when I did I may not be alive. The only reason why I went in (to see a doctor) is because I had been a truck driver for over 40 years and I fell off my load, and I was always sure footed. When I fell off my load thats when they found out that I had this disease, said Howe. PKD is a common disease that affects one in 500 people, and approximately 12.5 million people are affected worldwide. The disease equally affects men, women and children, and does not skip a generation. Those with PKD have a 50 per cent chance of passing the disease on to each of their children. PKD can also affect other organs such as the pancreas but the liver is the one primarily affected. After it was determined that he had PKD, Howe was then sent to a resident doctor who told him he had 32 per cent total function in both kidneys. This doctor more or less said not to worry, I could live till I was 95 and die of something not related, said Howe. Unfortunately he told me what I wanted to hear, not what I needed to hear. Because no one seemed overly concerned, Howe wasnt worried until within two and a half years he was told he had dropped down to 25 per cent kidney function. In March of 2013, Howe had dropped to 20 per cent. When I first got diagnosed I took it nonchalantly because they didnt seem to think it was that serious, or thats the way I felt, said Howe. (If) I had the proper guidance at the time I would have ate the proper foods and it may have slowed down the loss of my usage of my kidneys, may have, not for sure. After dropping to 20 per cent kidney function Howes specialist put him in touch with the renal clinic in downtown Calgary. The team at the clinic spoke to him about his disease, and gave him a binder to take home. It was while reading that binder of information that Howe and his wife Patricia discovered he should have been involved with the renal clinic when he was first diagnosed at 32 per cent. Howe is now looking for a kidney before dialysis goes from an option to necessity. With Polycystic Kidney Disease there is no treatment or cure. Approximately 60 per cent of those suffering from the (autosomal) dominant form of PKD will rely on either dialysis or transplantation, said Jeff Robertson, Chief Executive Officer for the PKD Foundation of Canada. For us to get a kidney this is where the problem starts to happen is anyone that donates a kidney first a of all they dont get the right information by contacting certain places, one in particular is believe it or not, the Kidney Foundation, said Howe. Howes youngest daughter, who is 37, has the same disease; she offered her kidney to Robert before her own diagnosis. When she began the process of figuring out how to donate thats when it was discovered she too has PKD. The Kidney Foundation told her they would take her kidney but that it may not go to her dad which was right in a way but not fully accurate. The way it was explained to Howe was that if you were to offer your kidney for a specific person and you are not a match, there is a pairing system option. You may not be a match for the particular person you want to donate to, but you may be for someone in Ontario and his or her donor may be a match for the person here. Organ donation across the board is a devastating statistic when you look at registered donors on a national level. More often now youre seeing people go about this approach where theyre trying to draw attention to their personal story in the hopes that someone will step up and be tested, and thats where hes at right now, said Robertson. Because his diagnosis came so late, dialysis is in the very near future for Howe. While it is a blessing that option is available, Robertson said it is not a quality of life by any means. Dialysis is time consuming, disrupts the day-today living and is draining both emotionally and physically. It would also mean regular trips into Calgary for Howe because there is nowhere in Strathmore equipped to provide dialysis. Continued on Page 13

This week I was checking out my Facebook page and noticed a posted video. I dont always take the time to watch said postings, but on this day I did and there were a couple of things that jumped out and struck me leaving a lasting impression. The video, directed by Werner Herzog, is called It Can Wait and is put out by four mobile phone companies. It speaks of the dangers of driving and texting at the same time. Four different scenarios are covered. The comment of one of the drive and text persons sticks. He said, I was texting and driving. I was more important to me than those two men were to there families. How selfish that was of me to make that decision, to text and drive. Our culture prides itself on its individualism. Do whatever makes you happy and immediate gratification is demanded. The gospel teaches otherwise. It teaches: we instead of I; our instead of my; us instead of me. Realizing that no text is so important it cannot wait until you are off the road recognizes that we live in community and offers the other respect and value as a person too. The other lasting impression is forgiveness. One young man who had killed three children from one family, 17, 5 and 3 received a letter from their father. The Amish father was Trusting in Gods way. He hoped all was in good cheer, and said they were making the best we can. He wondered if we take enough time with our children and wished the young man the best for himself and his children. He encouraged him to Keep looking up. God is always there. This father knows forgiveness and knows that without forgiving, his life will not go forward. To forgive is difficult but with the knowledge that you are forgiven by the Author of Life, it is possible to extend forgiveness even in the most difficult of situations. Keep looking up. Another week of summer fun in Rosebud

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Rosebud gives us another week, and reason, to celebrate the summer of 2013. Rod Beattie brings his one-man comedy play, Letter from Wingfield Farm, to the Opera House for four dinner-theatre shows, Aug. 28-30. The story is about a city slicker who moves to a rural area to become a farmer, a simpler way of life, says Mark Lewandowski, General Manager of Rosebud Centre of the Arts. Walt Wingfield writes letters to the editor of the local paper, describing his success or lack thereof at farming. That cross connection between rural and urban is a big part of Rosebud, Lewandowski says. Our audiences will relate and appreciate the collision of the two. Plus, Rod (Beattie) is such a great actor. People whove seen the show often tell us we must have had their community in mind, Beattie says. Its as if every Canadian farming community has a Freddy, (jack of all trades), a Squire (elder statesman), a Willy and Dave (younger, out-thereon-the-edge guys), a Don (the one successful farmer). The shows are family friendly, so it goes across age groups, says Lewandowski. All our audience will (enjoy it). Letter from Wingfield Farm tickets are selling quickly at www.rosebudtheatre.com. Carmen Paterson, the festivals co-founder and artistic director, says it highlights musicians of all genres, who have one thing in common -- theyre local. People are excited to see local musicians rock it out on a small little stage in Rosebud, she says. Lots of the musicians. ... are from Rosebud or from Redland or Drumheller or from Strathmore. And were all about promoting people who are brand new, she says. 3LIMIN8, a 14-year-old boy from Wetaskiwin, will play original dupstep music. Me. and the Mrs., Justine Vandergrift, Lewis and Royal, Jessica Benini, Kyla Ferrier, the Heartwicks, and Travis Friesen will also perform. Its exciting to see people you know and to follow their career, Paterson says. It feels pretty personal. The festival shows off other arts, too. One of our most popular things, Paterson says, is Randall Wiebes improv painting. The crowd watches Wiebe paint the portrait of an audience volunteer -- in just 15 minutes. Festival visitors can also wander down Vendors Lane and into the Art Tent. Thorny Rose Cafe and Wild Horse Jacks Bistro will also be open. Paterson encourages us to bring cash, and prepare for any weather. If its too wet, the event will move indoors. Those who go to Rosebud the day before can enjoy an open mic session at the Thorny Rose Cafe, hosted by Rosebud alumni Jessica Benini and Aaron Krogman. Doors open at 7 pm; open mic starts at 8. A loss in tie-breakers
Out of three teams from Saskatchewan, two teams from Manitoba, and three teams from Alberta, Strathmoreborn Katie Coulters Calgary Red Sox finished fifth at the Senior B Western Canada Fastpitch Finals in Saskatoon, from Aug. 15-18. It didnt quite go the way we planned, but it was still really good, Coulter said. Her team finished 3-3 in the round robin, tying for fourth place with Regina. However, since the top four teams make the playoffs, a tie-breaker game was needed. We played them in round robin as well, and we had a really tight game. We unfortunately werent hitting, we ended up losing 2-1 in the bottom of the sev-
enth. It was a really good game with them, Coulter said. The Red Sox lost 9-6 in the tie-break game. It was the same thing. We were back and forth the whole game; theyd score a run, wed score two, theyd score two, wed score one. Then in the sixth inning, we just kind of fell apart and let them get a few too many runs, Coulter said. The teams league play finished a few weeks ago, but they had several practices leading up to Westerns to prepare. It was our bats. They didnt really wake up until our fourth game into the tournament, Coulter said. I dont think we could have gotten any better defensively, any runs that they got were earned runs. It came down to we werent hitting, and getting the runs that we needed.
The Saskatoon Outlaws went undefeated the entire tournament, earning the gold. They were a very strong team, Coulter said. For the Red Sox, however, its now the end of their season. They didnt qualify for Westerns last year, but did the year before. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, the team did not compete. The last time we were there was three years ago, and we did improve. We didnt make playoffs last time, and we didnt make tie-breakers last time, Coulter said. We played really wellthere was great competition, the teams were solid, you had to be on your game, every game. Even though theres some games wed like back, Im still pretty proud of us.

morgan lee Times Contributor The 29th annual Gleichen Fall Fair is coming up this weekend on Aug. 24 at the Gleichen Sportsplex. The festivities begin at 8 a.m. for a pancake breakfast put on by the Lions Club and continue throughout the day, ending at 4:30 p.m., just before the rodeo. The Fall Fair will be host to an array of competitions including an apple pie bake-off, a chili cook-off and a judged bench show featuring crafts and baked goods. There will also be a show and shine with classic cars on display, and a demonstration by the local fire department. There will be lots of activities for kids as well, including face painting, jump houses and kids carnival activities. Proceeds from this years Fall Fair will be going to help the STARS air ambulance service. It looks like its shaping up and were hoping to have another successful year, said Brenda Tower, a main organizer of this event. Come one, come all and enjoy. Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Tour of Alberta announced another title that racers can compete for during the September, 900-km event. Each day, cyclists can win the Government of Alberta Leader jersey, the Subway Sprint jersey, the Canadian Western Bank Best Young Rider jersey, the Most Aggressive Rider jersey, the Top Canadian jersey, and now, the polkadot KOM jersey. The King of the Mountain (KOM) will allow racers to earn more points based on their individual times, proving their pacing and endurance over speed. Climbers are traditionally the smaller, leaner riders in the bunch weighing 60 kilograms or less, who dance their way up the big hills, said Tour of Alberta Chair, and former professional cyclist Brian Jolly, in a press release. Their high endurance levels help them to recover quickly, and the KOM intervals give climbers a chance to propel their teams score while adding significantly to their own personal bests. The King of the Mountain intervals become more and more challenging as the race goes on the intervals are as follows with their elevations: Sept. 3 in Edmonton on km 4 to 5.4 at the Alberta Legislature (669 m); Sept. 5 from Devon to Red Deer on km 148.8 at Highway 11/Red Deer Drive (890 m); Sept. 6 from Strathmore to Drumheller on km 98.2 at Highway 9 (835 m) and km 130.9 at Highway 27/Red Deer River (827 m); Sept. 7 at Black Diamond Foothills on km 81.9 and 120.4 at 274 Avenue (same location twice, 1302 m); Sept. 8 Okotoks to Calgary on km 42.4 at Route 762 (1362 m). Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter With fun methods, including the California stretch, and the super-hero approach (Batmans cape for arms back, ball high up in your hand like Superman, and a Green Arrow punch to hit), kids in the STARS volleyball program are developing talents on the court with the help of coach, Pat Fule. Its been going strong for quite a while, he said, the program in its tenth year. We try to stress a lot of fun and fundamentals and fitness; try to have them really enjoy themselves while theyre learning. There are 17 boys and girls in the morning program, for Grades 1-3, while 20 are in the senior program in afternoons, Grades 4-9. The camp runs from Aug. 19-23, three hours a day; STARS volleyball also holds a program once a week, beginning in March. Its more condensed. In the program during the year we have about nine or ten sessions, so you can spend a little more time on all the different skills, Fule said. Each day Im trying to do two of the major skills, like bumping and setting. We always teach them how to hit, right from the very first day the three step approach, the footwork. For the morning juniors, Fule uses badminton nets for shorter, easier access, and therefore simpler for the children to learn how to spike. Right away they can learn how to do the proper hitting, because we can hold up volleyballs and theyre still able to jump up and hit the ball down low over the net, he said. You want to try to hit on a lot of different skills, and different drills each morning. Youve got that week to try to improve. The volunteer coaches that assist with the program come from Crowther Memorial, Holy Cross, and Strathmore High, all of whom have experienced STARS in their youth. Were lucky that we get a lot of the kids who are young in our program, and then as they get older, they come back and help coach too, Fule said. These coaches are really good.
Over 230 participants from all over Alberta took part in the 11th annual Strathmore Womens Triathlon on Aug. 18. Racers of all skill levels started the event with a 500 metre swim at the Aquatic Centre and then moved to the streets where they biked and ran their way through 25 kilometres before crossing the finish line.

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Conditions were hot, but this did not stop 237 ladies racing in the 11th annual Strathmore Womens Triathlon on Aug. 18. It was spectacular, said organizer Deanne Jabs. Close to 50 per cent are first-ever triathletes. All of these women start off as first-timers, so it does feed a lot of women to other triathlons around the province. Its a really good introduction to the sport, having this race, which is pretty much designed for beginners. First place went to Tanya Saloman, a mother in her 40s, with a finishing time of 1:02:30. She was quite proud, Jabs said. She still has it in her. A close second at 1:03:19 was 21-year-old Madi Serpico, who first won the Strathmore race at age 16. She is a sponsored professional triathlete, whose family owns a store dedicated to the sport. Two para-athlete triathloners also competed in the race: Kim Wedgerfield and Jacqueline Cooper. The top Strathmore participant was Danielle Harris. Jabs says that though its important to acknowledge the top finishers, its not the main focus of the race. One of my slogans is see the effort and celebrate the accomplishment. We dont really celebrate the race winner, its more the accomplishment of finishing, and rewarding them with a medal, everyone gets their name announced at the finish line to make them feel like theyre champions for the day, she said. The race entailed a 500 m swim at the Aquatic Centre, a 20 km bike down Highway 817, and a 5 km run just south of Hope Church, which could be completed in a relay form as well; there was one team of a grandmother and granddaughter. The girl was only 12, so she couldnt do the bike. But the grandmother did the swim, and the bike, and the granddaughter did the run, Jabs said. It was really nice bonding for them. There were also five ladies who raced in the 60+ group. Jabs, a triathlete herself, was asked by the Alberta Triathlon Association to organize a race in southern Alberta, as there was already a womens only race in the north. Strathmore had an ideal location with the pool being on the outskirts of town, rather than having to negotiate through all the lights and traffic stops, she said. Potentially, this is a Canada Games kind of course so its just safer to have less traffic stops. As long as the local community is aware of the event and we have enough volunteers manning it, its a very safe course to ride on rather than riding in the city. Over 60 volunteers were needed to put on the contest; Co-op even donated a cake towards the race, a well-earned treat for the finishers. No cake was left over for some reason, said Jabs. Everyone deserves cake.

The Strathmore Super Series Youth Rodeo just wrapped up its annual event this past weekend, Aug. 17 and 18. This year out of 87 participants, 33 of them were local. Some of those were first time rodeo goers, and 23 of them have been part of the winter rodeo series, the Wheatland Cowboys and Cowgirls Rodeo Association. Crystal and Jim Stevens along with Christa and Gerald Aleman organized the event. We are so happy with the donations and huge volunteer support that we have received. This community was ready for something like this and it shows in the number of participants and the skill and level of competition, said Crystal. Jackets where awarded in each age group in each event (20 coats in total) and were sponsored by Agrium.

Remember the Fire?

Our Carseland First Responders as usual did a terrific service that day. The date was Feb. 9, 2006. You would think that in the middle of winter we should be safe from stubble fires but one began as a tiny spark miles north west of town. Fanned on by strong winds it ended up becoming a wall of fire blazing across the stubble fields. Our First Responders were out there trying to detain and direct it as well as evacuate the residents. Farmers attempted to cultivate burn barriers in the fields. Several other fire departments got involved. Unfortunately the fire continued to bear down upon us. Fortunately we had multiple response units bringing assistance and expertise. Besides our own first responders other units came from Calgary, Strathmore, Gleichen and Cheadle to name a few. In the end the fire actually burned right up to the 20 foot back alley on the North edge of town but never jumped over it. The largest aftermath was the smell and a lot of ash and straw to be cleaned up. Fortunately there was no loss of property or life. The next Sunday saw a packed house at Bow River Alliance Church recognizing our amazing First Responders and expressing gratitude to God for our safety.

Golf for an awesome guy

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Nathan Haase died on his day job as an electrician in August 2011, at the young age of 25. Since then, friends Mike Bobbitt and Preston Rusnack have created a memorial golf tournament in his honour. On Aug. 24, it will be in its second year at Strathmore Golf Club. One hundred and fifty-six golfers participated in 2012, and numbers are similar this year, with around 110 enrolled by the August 10 deadline. We still have a little bit of room, Rusnack said. Along with 18 holes and a golf cart rental, there will be dinner, and prizes golf jackets, golf bags, a beer fridge, his and hers watches and Flames tickets. All fundraising goes towards a scholarship at Strathmore High School on behalf of Haase. He liked to golf quite a bit, and we used to go out quite a bit too, just around Strathmore and out in British Columbia. He was always big into golf, had a nice set of clubs, and he really enjoyed the sport like myself, said Rusnack. Haase grew up in Strathmore, and volunteered as a rural firefighter. Before he died, he was like a brother to Rusnack. Me, him, and my brother, we were very close since we were about 5 or 6-years-old. He worked with us, went on vacations with us, hung out with us, we were basically like his second family, he said. Its a good day for everyone to get out and enjoy themselves in the memory of an awesome guy.

McLACHLAN, Eileen
It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Eileen McLachlan of Strathmore, AB on August 17, 2013 at the age of 69 years. Eileen is survived by her two loving children Patti (Alex) Chisholm and Brian Mow; precious grandchildren Connor, Michelle, and Cole; three brothers Ray, Jim, and John McLachlan; and seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother in 1990 and father in 2000. Eileen was born and raised in Brandon, Manitoba and graduated from psychiatric nursing in 1964. She continued her many friendships throughout the years. Eileen derived great pleasure and satisfaction from helping people less fortunate than herself. The family would like to thank the medical staff at the Foothills ICU for their care and compassion during this difficult time. William (Bill) Glenn July 20, 1947 August 17, 2013
Bill passed away peacefully with his daughter Riley at his side on Saturday August 17, 2013 at Calgary Rocky View Hospital at the age of 66. Bill is survived by his children, Stacey (Derek), Riley (Shea), Colin (Fiona), Niall, Nathan and Lynsay; grandchildren Loy and Wylie, Olive, Caitlin and Glen. He is also survived by his brother Wayne (Heather) and Uncle Lolly (Mary) Downey as well as his three wives (Judy, Gwen and Norma) and many cousins. Bill grew up in Carseland, AB. Working with his Dad and brother at Woods Bow Valley Service and Manufacturing businesses. He completed his Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification at SAIT. Bill then proceeded to move north near Worsley, AB. Where he farmed for 10 years. He was an avid hockey player in his younger years and coached in Worsley. He also acquired his Small Aircraft Pilots License later in life. Bill had many adventures in his life as well as many hardships. He would always lend a helping hand. He could make most people feel at ease in his presence with his laidback manner and great sense of humor and sarcasm. For this reason he was able to make many friends and acquaintances in his lifetime. He moved back to Carseland in 1991 and resided there until his declining health forced him into extended care in December 2010. He then resided at the Southwood Care Center in Calgary until his passing. Many thanks to his Extended Care Nurse, Liway. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday August 29, 2013 at Strathmore Alliance Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment Strathmore Cemetery.
