Steps to follow:
Follow the following steps to change any text into bold, italics or underline texts
1. Select the text.
2. Click on the correct icon in the format menu.
3. Remove the highlight to complete the change
Practice makes perfect.
Make the following changes to a document you have created.
1. Change the fonts for the first line to bold.
2. Change the font for the second line to italics.
3. Underline the third line.

ALIGNING TEXT
Texts can be aligned to the right, left or centralized.
Steps to fellow:
1. Select the text.
2. Click the correct aligning button on the formatting menu.
3. Deselect to remove highlight and complete the formatting.
Note: Formatting of the can also is made using a dialogue box from the formatting
menu.

Local Area Network (LAN): This refers to two or more (but usually a small
number of computers) connected to each other within a small area. The area may
be a small room or a building.
Wide Area Network (WAN): A Wide Area Network is a connection between two
or more Local Area Networks. The distance between such connected networks is
often very big. The internet is an example of a wide Area Network.

GROUP ACTIVITY:

b. Name some internet concepts.
2. Visit the internet (with your teacher) and find out the sort of things you can
find on it.
How the internet works: the internet works through the communication of between
various servers and clients for host computer.
Serves: are computers and software that are continuously connected to the internet
that provide access to their files and programs. Servers are often very powerful
with the capacity of holding huge amount of data to be accessed by others.
Client computers: are computers and software programs that access data or
information on a server.
Most often, we get onto the internet through other peoples server. They may be
our internet service provider, our school or place of work. Each server is given an
IP address. IP is the short form of Internet Protocol. The IP address is a set of
numbers that shows the exact location on a network. So if you get onto the internet
through the server of Ghana Telecom, your location can be traced to the servers of
Ghana Telecom.
The IP address may also be presented in the form of a name. For example
www.mazi computer.org. This is called a domain name.

USES OF THE INTERNET.
The internet has come to change our lives. It has changed the way we do a lot of
things. The following are some of the uses of the internet.
Find information: The web is like a huge encyclopedia of information. There is
information on almost everything and the internet depending on whether we know
how to look for the information.
There are several types of encyclopedia and the internet form which we can get
information we want. Some of the encyclopedias found on the internet are:

ww.encarta.com
Communicate with people all over the world: the e - mail makes it possible for us
to communicate faster and cheaper using the internet. The e mail has reduced our
dependence on normal letters that have to post through the mail box.
Make friends: The internet makes it easier for us to make friends. The are several
websites where people meet and make friends.
A place for holding discussion: the internet and the World Wide Web has created a
place for people to hold discussions about topics and issues of national and even
global importance.
A place to have fun: There are several games on the internet that we can play to
have fun. We can also watch TV programmes over the internet.
Education: The inter4net is a source of material for educating ourselves. A part
from, the huge amount of teaching and learning materials available for free, there

are also schools that teach over the internet. This is called online distance
education.
Read news: several news companies now put some of their news on the internet.
We can read news from CNN, BBC, Ghana Broad Casting Corporation, TV3,
Ghana web and a lot more on the internet.
Download software: a lot of softwares are available on the internet to be
downloaded for free. There are also some that have to be paid for.
Buy and sell items: Buying and selling of items on the internet is getting bigger
and bigger. We buy almost everything on the internet from building to clothing to
books. www.amazon.com is one of the main websites where gods are bought and
sold.
The E mail: e mail is the short form of Electronic Mail. It is the means of
sending messages form one computer to another over the internet. E Mail has
made communication a lot easier and cheaper.

GROUP ACTIVITY:
In groups of 5, discuss the importance of the internet.
The World Wide Web: The World Wide Web is a means of exchanging
information in the form of pictures, sounds, video, animation and text on the
internet. It is sometimes referred to simply as the web.
The World Wide Web is different from the internet. The internet is the network of
physical computers and other accessories such as modem, cables, phone line,
satellites etc. that are connected to each other enable communication to be
exchanged among the connected computers.
World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners Lee, a software engineer in
1991.
Dates sent over the internet are specially formatted in a computer language called
HTML (Hyper Text Mark up Language).
You need a web browser to be able to read information on the web.
Some problems in the use of the internet and the World Wide Web: the internet
and the World Wide Web are very useful but there are some problems that arise in
the use of the World Wide Web.

Internet fraud: people use the internet to cheat and defraud others of their
properties. A lot of people have lost money to fraudsters on the internet.
Showing of Inappropriate material: Sometimes materials that are not suitable for
children such as pornography may be placed on the internet. Violent materials
from criminals can also be on the internet and shown to children.
Physical danger: A person who met on the internet may deceive a child for them to
meet in person. Such as stranger may harm the child. A lot of children have been
molested by strangers they meet on the internet.
Unwanted e mails and advertisement: Unwanted e mails are called span.
People send out loads and loads of unwanted e mails and other materials over the
internet. This creates a lot of inconveniences for the receivers.
Deception: People may be deceived into giving out their identity over the internet.
Fraudster may use such stolen identities for criminal activities.
Virus: Viruses are intentionally spread on the internet to disrupt and damage other
people computers and work.
Netiquette: while using the internet, we must behave well and respect other users.
Netiquette are the rules about proper behavior on the internet. Some of these rules
are:
1. When you are part of a local area network, you must learn the rules of the
network and obey them.
2. Dont send someone large files they didnt request, dont send e mail
enmesh (spamming) .
3. Dont SHOUT (as anything typed in all capital letters appears).
4. Dont use bad, rude or disrespectful language at any time.
5. Do be aware of potential differences in cultures internationally.
6. Dont camp out: This means dont log in and just leave your connection idle
if youve not using it. Sign off and free up one of your providers modems
for someone else to use. While many internet services provide users with
unlimited internet access, this generally means unlimited use not idle
access.
