Welcome

On behalf of the Educate Jamaica Team, I would like to welcome you to our first publication of The Best Secondary Schools Guide. This is the first of our best schools guide and there will be one every year. This Guide has been designed to help parents and carers of children, leaving primary schools going into secondary schools, to select the best school to send their children to; thus giving their children the best opportunity at a great education. Our guide aims to help parents make a more informed choice as to which secondary school they send their children to and we have used performance indicators that measure this well. The indicators give an excellent indication of the performance of the schools as well as the result your children will likely leave the school with by the end of grade 11. This school guide was not designed to embarrass or shame any school but to give parents an insight into the performance of schools so that they may select the best school. At educatejamaica.org we believe that by improving the ability of parents to make a more informed choice, we will improve the standard and delivery of education. About educatejamaica.org educatejamaica.org is the online division of the privately owned company, EJ.org Limited. educatejamaica.org is an independent education think tank organisation, which focuses on the development and innovation of the education sector in Jamaica. Our vision for education is bold and ambitious and, our aim is to aid in creating a world class education system that produces well rounded individuals, who have been prepared adequately to contribute socially and economically to the society. Our focus is on all key stages of the education system, namely early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary and special education. What did we use to measure the performance of schools? According to research carried out by educatejamaica.org, the average qualification required to graduate from secondary school as well as to get a job is five (5) CSEC O level subjects which includes Mathematics and English. What we have done at Educate Jamaica is to look at each school and calculate what percentage of students they are turning out at the end of grade 11, with the expected minimum of 5 CSEC O level subjects (including Mathematics and/or English) and based on the percentage obtained they are ranked. The school with the highest percentage is the best school. The creation of this document was done by some of the greatest minds Jamaica has to offer, including some of the best Statisticians and Masters level educators on the island. We hope you find our secondary schools guide very useful and look out for next years publication.

Yours thankfully, Ainsworth Darby M.A. B.ed (Hons) Dip.ed Chairman educatejamaica.org

SCHOOL RANKINGS These ranking are based on the performance of all secondary schools across the entire island. The ranking will be done in a number of ways and they are outlined below: 1. All-island rankings 2. Top 20 all-island 3. Bottom 20 all-island 4. Girls school only 5. Boys school only 6. Co-educational only 7. The performance of schools within individual Parishes 8. The ranking of parishes in terms of pupil educational outcomes The rankings are based on the performance of schools in obtaining five (5) or more subjects in the most recent SCEC examinations. The figures are calculated based on each secondary school enabling their cohort at the end of their 5 years of statutory education, to leave grade 11 with a minimum of five (5) subjects which includes English and/or Mathematics in the CSEC examinations.

ALL-ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL RANKINGS The all-island ranking shows the comparative performance of secondary schools across the entire island. The ranking goes from number 1, which is the best performing school (the school where your child is likely to have the greatest level of success) to 162 which is the poorest performing school on the entire island (The school where your child is likely to have the least amount of success). The percentage figure doesnt only tell you the level of success that each school is having (at producing a pupil with at least 5 subject including Mathematics and/or English), it also tells you the likely probability of your child succeeding in a school. In other words if the school has a 90% pass rate, then your child has a 90% chance of succeeding. On the other hand if the school has a 1% pass rate, your child has a 1% chance of succeeding at the school. Ranking Name of school Percentage (%) of grade 11 cohort attaining Five (5) subjects with English and/or Mathematics. 97.6% 96.8% 96.2%
