Mettasutta (Khp 9) The Discourse on Friendliness Meditation (an analysis)

Karayam-atthakusalena yan-ta santa pada abhisamecca What should be done by one skilful in good, who has comprehended the state of peace: Karayam what should be done attha (= atthe) in good kusalena by one skilful yan-ta (the one) who santa of peace pada the state abhisamecca has comprehended

sakko uj ca sj ca suvaco c' assa mudu anatimn he ought to be able, straight, and upright, easy to speak to, meek, without conceit, sakko able uj straight ca and sj upright ca and suvaco easy to speak to c' (= ca) and assa he ought to be mudu meek anatimn without conceit

santussako ca subharo ca appa-kicco ca sallahuka-vutti satisfied (with little), easy to support, with few duties, and light in living, santussako satisfied ca and subharo easy to support ca and appa- few kicco duties ca and sallahuka- (= sa+lahuka) (with) light vutti living

sant' indriyo ca nipako ca appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho with faculties at peace, prudent, not forward, and greedless among the families, sant' (= santa) peace indriyo faculties ca and nipako prudent ca and appagabbho (= a+pagabbho) not forward kulesu among the families ananugiddho (= an+anugiddho) greedless

na ca khudda samcare kici yena vi pare upavadeyyu he should not do the slightest thing whereby others who are wise might find fault (with him). na not ca (connective particle) khudda slightest samcare he should do kici thing yena whereby vi wise pare others upavadeyyu might find fault

"Sukhino v khemino hontu sabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt "(May all beings) be happy and secure, may all beings in their hearts be happy! Sukhino happy v (= va) emphatic khemino secure hontu be sabbe all satt beings bhavantu may (they) be sukhitatt (= sukhita+att) happy in heart

Ye keci pa-bht' atthi tas v thvar v anavases Whatsoever breathing beings there are trembling, firm, or any other (beings), Ye keci Whatsoever pa- breathing bht' (= bht) beings atthi there are tas trembling v or thvar firm v or anavases any other (lit: what remains)

dgh v ye mahant v majjhim rassakuka-thl whether they be long or great, of middle size, short, tiny, or of compact (body), dgh long v or ye they (who) mahant great v or majjhim middle (size) rassak(a)- short (a)uka tiny thl compact (body)

dih v ye ca addih ye ca dre vasanti avidre those who are seen, and those who are unseen, those who live far away, those who are near, dih seen v (or) ye those who ca and addih (= a+dih) unseen ye those who ca and dre far (away) vasanti live avidre near

bht v sambhaves v sabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt those who are born, and those who still seek birth may all beings in their hearts be happy!" bht those who are born v or sambhaves those who seek birth v or sabbe all satt beings bhavantu may (they) be sukhitatt (= sukhita+att) happy in heart

Na paro para nikubbetha ntimaetha katthaci na kaci No one should cheat another, nor should he despise anyone wherever they be, Na no paro one (lit: other) para another nikubbetha should cheat ntimaetha (= na+atimaetha) nor should he despise katthaci wherever na kaci anyone

byrosan paigha-sa nam-aassa dukkham-iccheyya he should not long for suffering for another because of anger or resentment. byrosan because of anger paigha-sa because of (an idea of) resentment n(a) not (a)am-aassa for another dukkham suffering iccheyya he should long

Mt yath niya putta yus eka-puttam anurakkhe in the same way as a mother would protect her son, her only son, with her life, Mt a mother yath in the same way as niya her (lit: one's own) putta son yus life eka- only (lit: one) puttam son anurakkhe would protect

evam-pi sabba-bhtesu mnasa bhvaye aparima so toward all beings he should develop the measureless thought (of friendliness). evam so pi (emphatic) sabba- all bhtesu toward beings mnasa thought bhvaye he should develop aparima measureless

Metta-ca sabba-lokasmi mnasa bhvaye aparima Towards the whole wide world he should develop the measureless thought of friendliness, Metta friendliness ca (connective particle) sabba- whole lokasmi towards the world mnasa thought bhvaye he should develop aparima measureless

uddha adho ca tiriya-ca asambdha avera asapatta above, below, and across (the middle), without barriers, hate, or enemy. uddha above adho below ca and tiriya across ca and asambdha (= a+sambdha) without barriers avera (= a+vera) hate asapatta (= a+sapatta) without enemy

Tiha cara nisinno v sayno v yvat' assa vigatamiddho Standing, walking, sitting, lying, for as long as he is without torpor, Tiha Standing cara walking nisinno sitting v (or) sayno lying v (or) yvat' (= yvat) for as long as assa he is vigata without middho torpor

eta sati adiheyya brahmam-eta vihra idha-m-hu he should be resolved on this mindfulness, for this, they say here, is the (true) spiritual life. eta this sati mindfulness adiheyya should be resolved on brahmam spiritual eta this vihra life idha here m (euphonic particle) hu they say dihi-ca anupagamma slav dassanena sampanno without going near to (wrong) views, virtuous, and endowed with (true) insight, dihi views ca (and) anupagamma (= an + upagamma) without going near slav virtuous dassanena insight sampanno endowed kmesu vineyya gedha na hi jtu gabbha seyya puna-r-et ti having removed (all) greed for sense pleasures, he will never come to lie in a womb again. kmesu for sense pleasures vineyya having removed gedha greed na not hi emphatic jtu emphatic gabbha womb seyya lie puna again r (euphonic particle) eti will come ti (quotation marker)
