Digging up History
Two Eddleston School pupils had an exciting experience in August, helping archaeologists investigate the site of a medieval chapel close to the battlefield of Bannockburn. Not only did they both find lots of pottery, glass and metalwork from the site of the medieval chapel at Cambusbarron, but were also interviewed about their finds by a BBC film crew making a documentary about the Battle of Bannockburn. 'It was great fun', said P5 pupil Audrey Simpson Yeoman. 'My Dad dug a really deep hole and we searched the soil for finds.' 'We found loads of stuff', added P5 pupil Rebecca Toolis, 'My favourite was a part of a clay pipe that had an 'M' stamp on it.' The two children and their fathers went along to the dig as a result of the Eddleston School Auction, organised by the Eddleston School Parent Council last year, to raise funds for school activities and outings. Rebecca's dad, a Director at GUARD Archaeology Ltd, had pledged to bring a parent and child along to one of the digs his company is undertaking this year, searching for archaeological remains of the Battle of Bannockburn. Audrey's parents successfully bid for this and on Sunday the pledge was fulfilled, giving Audrey and her Dad their first taste of an archaeological dig. Anyone keen to take part in an archaeological dig investigating the Battlefield of Bannockburn might be interested to know that there will be another opportunity on Saturday 14 September.
Cloich Wind Farm update from Eddleston & District Community Council
There were many, and major, objections to the proposed wind farm at Cloich, from national statutory consultees, local Community Councils, and the general public. However, the developers, Partnership for Renewables (PfR), will be submitting supplementary environmental information, and the Scottish Government has allowed them until 6th December, 14 months after the original application was submitted, to do this. This is the 4th extension to the original deadline for submission, and there are concerns that there may not be a sufficiently extended amount of time for local people to consider this new submission when it is finally available for consultation. At the same time, it is important to understand the role of Scottish Borders Council (SBC) in this; although the Energy Consents and Deployment Unit (ECDU) of the Scottish Government is the 'determining authority' for this planning application, and the final decision will be made by Scottish Government Ministers, SBC is a consultee which is asked for its formal views on the development prior to Government making its planning decision. SBC gathers all specialist advice from consultees within the Council on the following: landscape architecture (landscape and visual impact) archaeology (direct and indirect cultural heritage impacts) environmental health (noise, flooding) building conservation (settings of listed buildings, structures, parks and gardens) path network maintenance (development impacts of use of the public path network) roads/road user safety (traffic impacts) ecology and ornithology SBC will present a formal recommendation to its own Planning and Building Standards Committee in due course. It must do this prior to submitting its formal views to Government. But this doesn't reflect the true role and importance of SBC as a consultee whose views influence the project and encourage PfR to look again at the nature of the submissions. SBC has been working with agencies such as Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland and others and with the developer, PfR and with ECDU to express concerns, particularly on the impact of the proposed development - for 18 turbines, each over 400 feet high on the landscape and on cultural heritage assets in particular.
