Local families are all smiles for Saturday Club...

The first of a regularly monthly session for under-5s was held in Eddleston Hall on the last Saturday in August. The event was a great success with over a dozen children and their parents joining in the fun. The next session is on Saturday 28th September from 10am - 11.30am. Thanks to everyone who supported the event and who volunteered to help on the day. If you have ideas for activities to include at future sessions or if you would like to

Digging up History
Two Eddleston School pupils had an exciting experience in August, helping archaeologists investigate the site of a medieval chapel close to the battlefield of Bannockburn. Not only did they both find lots of pottery, glass and metalwork from the site of the medieval chapel at Cambusbarron, but were also interviewed about their finds by a BBC film crew making a documentary about the Battle of Bannockburn. 'It was great fun', said P5 pupil Audrey Simpson Yeoman. 'My Dad dug a really deep hole and we searched the soil for finds.' 'We found loads of stuff', added P5 pupil Rebecca Toolis, 'My favourite was a part of a clay pipe that had an 'M' stamp on it.' The two children and their fathers went along to the dig as a result of the Eddleston School Auction, organised by the Eddleston School Parent Council last year, to raise funds for school activities and outings. Rebecca's dad, a Director at GUARD Archaeology Ltd, had pledged to bring a parent and child along to one of the digs his company is undertaking this year, searching for archaeological remains of the Battle of Bannockburn. Audrey's parents successfully bid for this and on Sunday the pledge was fulfilled, giving Audrey and her Dad their first taste of an archaeological dig. Anyone keen to take part in an archaeological dig investigating the Battlefield of Bannockburn might be interested to know that there will be another opportunity on Saturday 14 September.

Cloich Wind Farm update from Eddleston & District Community Council
There were many, and major, objections to the proposed wind farm at Cloich, from national statutory consultees, local Community Councils, and the general public. However, the developers, Partnership for Renewables (PfR), will be submitting supplementary environmental information, and the Scottish Government has allowed them until 6th December, 14 months after the original application was submitted, to do this. This is the 4th extension to the original deadline for submission, and there are concerns that there may not be a sufficiently extended amount of time for local people to consider this new submission when it is finally available for consultation. At the same time, it is important to understand the role of Scottish Borders Council (SBC) in this; although the Energy Consents and Deployment Unit (ECDU) of the Scottish Government is the 'determining authority' for this planning application, and the final decision will be made by Scottish Government Ministers, SBC is a consultee which is asked for its formal views on the development prior to Government making its planning decision. SBC gathers all specialist advice from consultees within the Council on the following: landscape architecture (landscape and visual impact) archaeology (direct and indirect cultural heritage impacts) environmental health (noise, flooding) building conservation (settings of listed buildings, structures, parks and gardens) path network maintenance (development impacts of use of the public path network) roads/road user safety (traffic impacts) ecology and ornithology SBC will present a formal recommendation to its own Planning and Building Standards Committee in due course. It must do this prior to submitting its formal views to Government. But this doesn't reflect the true role and importance of SBC as a consultee whose views influence the project and encourage PfR to look again at the nature of the submissions. SBC has been working with agencies such as Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland and others and with the developer, PfR and with ECDU to express concerns, particularly on the impact of the proposed development - for 18 turbines, each over 400 feet high on the landscape and on cultural heritage assets in particular.

Chat in the Hat

This informal discussion group meets in the church on the last Monday of each month from September to March (not December) at 7.30pm. Bring along a topic, pop in into the hat and enjoy the enfolding discussion over a glass of wine and some nibbles. Much fun and laughter is guaranteed! Next session: 30th September.

Minister visits Eddleston Water Project

Paul Wheelhouse, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, visited the Eddleston Water Project last week, (27 August) meeting key people from the project partnership and viewing current work to restore a stretch of the river that was straightened over 200 years ago. Tweed Forum have been working with local contractors, Glendinning Groundworks, and with cbec eco-engineering, to put the bends back into a section of river that has been flowing in a straight line for over two centuries. This will not only increase the river length but also the diversity of habitats within the river and along its banks, with knock on benefits for the likes of salmon and otters. The Project partnership were delighted that the Minister took the time to see the current restoration work on the Eddleston. However, this is just one part of a long-term effort to restore the river and its catchment and measure the effects this has on reducing flood risk. Working with farmers and land owners the Project has brought about out wide-scale planting of native trees in the headwaters, built flow restrictors and log jams, created wetlands and improved river habitats, including re-meandering and enhancement of the main river. If you would like the opportunity to hear more, representatives of Tweed Forum will be attending the October meeting of Eddleston Community Council on Wednesday 23rd October at 8pm in the village hall. For more information on Tweed Forum visit www.tweedforum.org

Eddleston Out of School Club

It has been a busy few months for the Out of School Club. We ended the summer term with a Care Inspectorate inspection and are delighted to have received an excellent report.
The inspection looks at different aspects of the Scottish Charity No: SC040349 club and for each of Quality of Care & Support, Quality of Environment, Quality of Staffing and Quality of Management and Leadership the club was rated Very Good; the highest possible rating. This is a huge achievement and all credit is due to Alison Brown, the Club Manager and Gayle Taylor, Play Assistant, in achieving this. A copy of the full report can be viewed at http:// www.scswis.com by searching for the club name under Day Care of Children. We have had a great time fundraising too and are only part way through the years activities. In early June a Sponsored Superstars day raised 304 and a lot of fun was had completing challenges and cheating at rounders! A Sponsored Slim is currently underway where some mums and dads have taken up the challenge of eating a bit healthier and shedding a pound or two. This ends on 3rd September where we will have the big weigh in. On September 20th we are having the grand OOSC Sleepover! Children and a few brave volunteer mums and dads will be bringing their jammies and beds for an all-night sleepover in the village hall. A midnight feast will be compulsory and we never know, some might even get some sleep! If you have been nobbled for sponsorship money over this time, thank you; the club depends on it and it is much appreciated. At the end of the summer term, Gayle Taylor sadly finished working for the club to travel in Canada. Gayle has been with the club for the last five years and will be much missed by all of us. However, we are excited that Katie Mill has agreed to fill her position. Katie now lives in Peebles, but previously lived in the village and was a pupil at the school. She has just left High School and is looking to start a career in child To receive future newsletters via email send care and education, so we are very lucky she is your email address coming on board.
